Great info here as always, thanks Adam! I recently purchased a CDX to get into Sega CD, so that new memory card sounds awesome. Also, I was looking to get back into Master System (as it was my first system) and was super bummed to hear the power base converter was not compatible with the CDX... But with the new one, when you said, "It works on the Sega CDX" I literally jumped out of my seat with a cheer! Haha thanks again man.

There is an official version of the Power Base Converter that was released in PAL regions with the Model II Mega Drive in mind. It doesn't support the card games either, but it has a big pause button. It was called Master System Converter II. I have one of those and it works for me.
@WhiteJarrah7 жыл бұрын
Are there variants of those memory cards that allow you to stack another cartridge on top of? I use a Japanese Sega Drive with Japanese Mega CD, to play my PAL Mega CD games I use an EverDrive to load the region free bios. Obviously with the Everdrive inserted there is nowhere to insert a memory card. A card with a stack-on would solve this issue though.
@justfadingaway11 жыл бұрын
Even though emulators are great. Nothing compares to actually putting the game in the original system with a controller in your hands.
@AdamKoralik11 жыл бұрын
Agreed.
@Disthron10 жыл бұрын
One of the problems I have with the cartridge version of the Power Base Converter is that, if I need to press the pause button. I have to be really careful not to bump the cart out of the slot and freeze the game. This was a big problem in Wonder Boy 3 Dragons's Trap. I see you mentioned this in your review. However you failed to mention that the original Power Base Converter allowed you to play the 3D games. Also, there were apparently a lot more games released in card form than you think. But most of them were also released in cart form.

After watching this it made me really miss my Sega Zord. I had the first run Genesis but I had the top loading model of the Sega CD. I remember the day I got the 32X and it took me two days to finally get it all connected. That damn piece of plastic you had to take off before you inserted it into the Genesis is what took the two days....didn't know it was there.
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
You have to respect Sega's willingness to do so many obviously crazy ideas.
@EchoesOfAncients10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If memory serves me correctly the Genesis was the only console that had a headphone jack with volume control on the console. I thought that was a weird feature but it was great for those late night Streets Of Rage sessions. Ordered my 4X card today. Now I can finally progress through my copy of Shining Force CD. As soon as I was done with Book 2 I had to stop because I didn't have enough room to save progress from the 3rd and 4th book. Thanks for the Sega CD coverage Adam.

You cant really play the Sega Card games on the Original PBC. Since they did not include the Master System's video processor and had the Master System CPU work with the Genesis one. The Genesis video processor is incapable of displaying the lower video modes required by the Sega Card games, as most are re-releases of Sega SG-1000 and Mark II games.

The manufacturer, db-elec, says the SegaCD backup cart's 32x incompatability warning was just from speculation based on reports from one customer. They have since tested it with all combinations of hardware and found it to be working fine. Did you find this to be the case with yours?

Does the power base mini play the JP games? cuz the cartridges for the JP master system were smaller.
@TwistedD8511 жыл бұрын
From what I've read the PBC is just an adapter and essentially a key that activates the SMS hardware on the board via some pins, the 32x isn't capable of allowing the passthrough so the SMS hardware lies dormant or something to that effect. Although I'm not sure if you could somehow hardwire the SMS activation on the main system and make it work, without checking I haven't a clue.
@AdamKoralik11 жыл бұрын
You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Though as far as activating it through the 32X, that I don't know about.

The Sega Master System had some of what I consider to be the best 8-bit games out there! I modded my Nomad to work with Sega Master System games just a jumper from the cart slot to the main ASIC, and manually wired my own adapter and it works grate. ps I have an S-Video modded SMS and Model One Genesis and the pic is grate for a cheep mod that works on US TVs.

Neat mod as far as the Nomad goes. Try RGB SCART (to HDMI) if possible. Blows away S-Video. I did a video on it if you're curious.

I have the original Master System converter and a version 2 Sega Genesis. When my brother and I bought it when we were younger and realized that it would not fit on the version 2 Genesis we figured that the back part of the converter is what made up the difference in compatibility. We removed a 2" section of the back of the converter and it fit on our version 2 Sega Genesis. It also did not impact the stability of the converter on the Genesis. Just wanted to share that for those who did not know and have a version 2 Genesis and thought about getting this Master system converter.
@I979WarMachine10 жыл бұрын
One other thing, I also have the Genesis v2/Sega CD v2/32x long set up and the Master System adapter does not get in the way of any connections (after removing the 32x).

Just wondering Adam, do you think there are any downsides to the CDX? I know they go for a bit of money these days, but I'd consider getting one because I like the compact design and useful combination of the two systems together. I'm just wondering if there are any issues with it being so small compared to the Model 1 and 2 Sega CDs.
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
I loved the CDX until I realized it didn't support RGB SCART. Haven't touched it since.

AdamKoralik Sorry I couldn't reply earlier, KZbin didn't show me any notifications for a week. I didn't even know you responded. Obviously, I would have to mod it then. Other than that, I have a question about the Genesis model 1 and 2 audio through scart/hdmi. I know most model 2s have inferior sound chips that model 1s, but is any indication sound quality alleviated when put through the scart/hdmi setup?
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
ShogunGin0 You're asking if the sound quality degrades? If so, no, SCART is designed to carry stereo audio. But without a model 1, and use of the headphone jack, you won't get that.
@ShogunGin010 жыл бұрын
AdamKoralik I realize that I actually poorly worded my question, my apologies. Let me try again: If a Model 1 and Model 2 are hooked up with scart/hdmi, and the Model 2 is one of the ones with a worse sound chip, will the scart/hdmi improve the Model 2's sound to be closer to Model 1 quality.
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
ShogunGin0 I don't see how it would. It's just passing the source audio straight through.

I read in one of your comments that you don't have a Game Gear SMS converter. I think I can still get one. Let me know if you're interested. Also, that 2nd power base converter, since it can't use the cards, can't use the SegaScope 3-D. Not a huge loss either, but makes some decent games like Maze Hunter and Missile Defense unplayable or gimped.

Hmm, I've never actually played my segaCD before even though it's always connected to the Genesis. Some time between when my parents last played it and now, it broke and won't get power. What happens when you try booting the new power base converter through a 32x? Just a black screen? Also there a reason that it doesn't work with the 32x. Is it just because of the way the 32x takes over the Genesis hardware?

@AdamKoralik if u were selling sega cd model 2 personally online how much would u sell them 4? im looking 2 buy a cheap used copy in good condition. i need 1. i only have the model 2 genesis ( which is just missing the sega cd expansion port's cover but has the inside lighter weight red strip cover so it's still protected) and i want it 4 expanded library of my sega genesis games. so it would help.
@AdamKoralik10 жыл бұрын
Just so you know, the model 1 Sega CD will work with the model 2 Genesis. It looks weird, but it does function. The model 2 Sega CD has skyrocketed in the last year or so. They usually go for around $100 to $150 now. If you find one cheaper, you're getting a deal. If you find a "broken" one. Odds are all that's wrong is a dead fuse on the board. Fixing that will likely repair it. It's a decent way to get one on the cheap.

About time someone made a Sega CD memory card. I always wondered, why didn't Sega make the Sega CD 32x games, utilize the 32X to have a memory/ram cartridge in it, instead of just requiring it but being useless.
@AdamKoralik11 жыл бұрын
1: Sega did make a Sega CD memory card. I showed it in this video. 2: As far as I know Sega had already dropped the 32X by the time Digital Pictures started using it for the combo games. Digital Pictures stands as the one and only developer to make "games" for the combo. I say it with quotations because they're ALL FMV games. They use the 32X to enhance the colors and overall picture quality of the game. But nothing more. 3: I too wish more developers, or hell any really, had taken advantage of the combo. But it just wasn't around long enough. Plus, I imagine it would be hell to program for.

I have Master Systems. Frankly this is just easier to use if your set up is properly rigged up for it. For MOST people, they're more likely to be able to find a Genesis and use this in combination. But yes, if you have a Master System (model 1), there isn't a whole lot of point.

I'm surprised they never used the cartridge slot for a lone SVP/3D chip to make the Sega CD generate polygons. That way 32X games would have came on much cheaper CD. The 32X add-on should have been a RAM expansion for the Sega CD.
@RRW3598 жыл бұрын
I think they didn't come out with the SVP until WELL after the CD, and Virtua Racing (the first and only game with the SVP) came out after the 32x. This means that by the time Sega was able to mass produce the chip, the 32x was already out. I know Sega was famous for releasing competing hardware, but even they must have had their limits. Why release an SVP-like add-on when it will just compete with the 32x?

I have a Interceptor Mega Disk, in black and "Master System\Genesis 1" red. This CD-backup device will provide me with all of the program\game development room I need to make my model 1 Genesis do tricks! I was wondering if the different cartridges were the same size, as the "Interceptor Specify(Specific) Card" did not come with the unit. I bought a usb floppy emulator drive to try out in place of the current(brand new(non-factory) replacement) 3.5" - 1.44MB floppy drive. I have the 16Mb model, not the 8Mb one.For anyone reading this, who isn't familiar with a floppy drive for the Genesis, it was used for dumping games, copying games, and testing\developing games, but it has the 16Mb on-board memory limit, so you would pop in a similar cart to this, instead of a factory game, and use the floppy to load, Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, and maybe even 32x roms(honestly haven't been cracking it's cryptic secrets that long yet) that were bigger than the on-board memory(multi-disk during loading, as prompted) could hold. Very rare item!

You know the Everdrive has that functionality too, along with the ability to run other mega cd bioses and hacked region free versions. region free doesn't mean you won't have any issues with imports. the FMV games can suck even more at the wrong frame rate.

I assume you mean to run ROMs. This uses authentic cartridges.

AdamKoralik I didn't mean to run Roms, though the everdrive can, for both megadrive , 32x and master system. I main point is that. The Everdrive has the ability to function as a backup ram cartridge and it does it by default if you select run CD or load a Mega CD bios. The Region lock for Mega-Cd is in the Bios, much like loading roms, you can use the everdrive to load a sega CD or JP mega CD bios instead of the one built in to your mega CD. Those bios literally act like those systems so will only run the region of game designed for them, you can get hold of hacked region free bios's ( the jap mega CD multi region bios runs works best and runs all games ). That way you'll be able to play imported games like Lunar,or many of the weird and wonderful things from japan. you can even run up Bios for say a Mega cd or Sega Cd on a mega CD2 sega CD 2 if you wanna see the other logos and stuff. You can swap the mega CD backup ram file out on the SD card and use it with an Emulator or copy them to the back up ram cart file from an emulator. if you wish. or even set up many cart's backup ram cart's and swap the file you want into the mega directory if you need more space. The you cannot load roms for the Mega CD, It's impossible without emulating the CD drive or some serious hardware modification. The Mega CD never had any DRM and loads CD-r's just fine just fine, handy as some games are super rare and bloody expensive. I was lucky that i brought my copies of snatcher and Shining force back when they where in bargain bins. I use CD-r Copies now even though I'm pretty careful.

Also, I have that shitty 4th edition Sega Genesis thingy from Atgames, (I have to have all genesis, so I got it.) And Master System cartridges fit in it, but they don't work since It's a SOAC.

Yeah, that's just a shitty clone console.

Ouch, this seems better than the model 2 converter, it's so uncommon.

What a misoppertunity from sega that they didn’t make the nomad & genesis 3 compatible with sms games, Sure a mod can fix that but what if you want to keep those systems in it’s original prestine condition but still want to be able to play sms games on it? Well i was thinking what if somebody could invent a sms to genesis adaptor wich contains a powerful middle man cpu to realtime recompile Z80 code into 68000 code sothat the genesis could percieve & process it like a real genesis game. Both the sound & ppu chip and controller doesn’t have to be emulated since they are straight compatible with sms games, That would be very cool.

Hey Adam, I saw something on neogaf saying they are releasing 20 GB USB based memory cards that look like original Xbox cards for the Xbone , it has a lockout chip preventing it to be used with other devices,
