You have to remember that when the PS3 was first released, Blu Ray players were just starting to become household items at about $300-$500 a pop alone. So the PS3 was kind of a bargain console/BRD player hybrid, and I guess that's how they justified the price.

Sony were actually selling the PS3 at a loss to start with, the reason it was so expensive at launch was because it had a Blu-Ray drive, these were very expensive at the time and a lot of standalone players cost more than the console, it was also considered one of the best Blu-Ray players you could buy (partly due to firmware updates by having an online connection) and for a while was the only one on the market capable of decoding both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD (Blu-Ray Profile 2.0). The Xbox 360 in comparison had a standard DVD drive, hence why some games had more than 1 disc.

Shawn went on to explain what they meant from their statement 'So we had to look at it from a technical point of view, we have to work with our partners from a business point of view, we have to make sure that if we enable this, do we have the right customer service support, do we have the right messaging out there, do we have all these different things that you have to get in line,' Layden said. In other statements it was said they didnt want it because they couldnt guarantee parents that people on the internet wouldnt be mean to their precious love childs failing to take into consideration that people on the PSN could be just as mean and have nothing happen if not repeatedly reported. @DoomFinger5114 жыл бұрын
There was a reason why the PS3 initially cost so much. They tried that same tactic as they did with the PS2 by including a bluray player (with bluray just being released). However it didn't pan out the same (as with the PS2 and the DVD player) since very few people could afford flat screen TV's that could show the increase in quality. The PS3 also was backwards compatible with PS2 games. A feature that got removed when they reduced the price because they had to cut out the extra red laser and hardware to read PS2 games. Those early PS3's are actually worth more then the later models.
@ElNeroDiablo4 жыл бұрын
They didn't cut out the red laser for the PS3 to cheapen it - if they did then the later models wouldn't be able to play regular DVD movies, or audio CD's (though that needs an infrared laser itself). CD players only have the IR laser, DVD players have both a CD's IR laser and the DVD-specific red laser, Blu-Ray players have the CD IR laser, DVD red laser and the new Violet ("Blue") laser of the eponymous Blu-Ray. It costs them nearly nothing to add the lasers in for previous 5.25" optical disc technology in the newer versions, plus it lets them tout "backwards compatibility with your old media" when advertising the new hardware. PS3 Phat launched with both PS2 CPU & PS2 GPU alongside the PS3 CPU & PS3 GPU. Sony only cut out the PS2's CPU with the move from the Phat to Slim (though later Phat's without the CompactFlash card port and such under that front flap were missing it too) and then cut out the PS2's GPU with the launch of the SuperSlim. With the cut of the PS2 CPU, that caused early PS3 games that relied on it along with the disc and digital PS2 games to partially emulate said chip, then with the removal of the PS2 GPU meant the system had to fully emulate within the Cell Broadband Engine (PS3's CPU) the CPU & GPU functions of the PS2 for both disc and digital games. The only reason the PS4 won't play audio CD's isn't because of some "missing laser" but rather Sony decided "screw it" and refused to pay the licensing fees for the codecs to allow audio CD's and MP3 files to be played.

The PS3 Cell processor just showed that Sony was still relying on the console technics they picked up when working with Nintendo. The ps1 is built like a 32-bit SNES and the PS2 was built like an overclocked PS1. The whole idea of splitting certain functions across different ram comes from the SNES or general consoles of old in general. They didn't really understand this technic has more diminishing return than actually benefit.

The PS3 was expensive because it had a built in blu-ray player, not because of the Cell architecture. And it was the cheapest blu-ray player by half thr price at the time. The PS3’s inclusion of the BD drive helped blu-ray win the format war, which was very profitable for Sony, so I seriously doubt they consider it a mistake or would do anything differently. This whole video is full of misinformation. I used to like your channel, now you guys need to get your facts straight. Or is that a mistake you’re making that you want us to forget/overlook??

Don't forget the built in WiFi and bluetooth connectivity. Two things Xbox 360 didn't have out the box. The bluetooth connectivity was dope since you could literally use any bluetooth headset you wanted. Actually the 360 never bluetooth capabilities, and you had to pay an extra $250 just to get HD dvd playback capabilities and WiFi. Oh and the 60 and 80gb models were backwards capable. The 1st generation models also allowed the more tech savvy crowd to setup a dual boot with various linux distros. Basically at the price all 4 models cost at the time, the ps3 was worth the asking price. I also agree with everyone else, it's funny the one true thing Sony would want ppl to forget about wasn't mentioned. The various D DOS attacks that overwhelmed the servers causing the network to be down for almost a whole week.

Nope, they obtained a really bitter result, they skipped the dual layer DVD's and later had disagreements with their partners (Blu-ray technology wasn't a single company development). They ended within the nowhere today, you know what else disappeared along DVD players in computers, yes, everything else but USB ports, that is even true for laptops. Competitors from the same era that succeeded are the SSD's or the portable Hard Drives. Before anyone says, yes I am aware that the movies sector supports this format, yet it struggles against other common options, meanwhile it had an astronomical inversion behind.

Honestly, the PS3 launch price shouldn't really be up there at all (let alone be the first). First of all, the 20/60GB HDD was standard for its time! if you want to download 2013 games, upgrades were available then. Besides, Sony had HDD support on the PS2 before anyone thought about it. As for the price, the launch PS3 was actually 3 consoles mashed into one, IT WAS 3 FULLY SEPARATE HARDWARE (meaning it supports PS/PS2 in FHD) not to mention it was a home video player for CD/DVD/BR, and supports reading media from USB and a card reader. in addition to the standard network/internet access of its generation (which Sony also was ahead of its time in PS2) All these features made it (and could still be) the ultimate home entertainment system, and probably the father of Smart TVs/TV Boxes. later versions reduced the price and in return made away with the extra features, no more retro-compatible hardware, less portable media connections....etc. They also had bigger HDDs. I don't think it was a mistake more than a marketing strategy (That I am glad they did, if they hadn't released the full capability version first, it wouldn't sell later, and therefore Sony could have never released such a version, ie we could have never seen a PS/PS2 console with factory HDMI)
