@@Hopischwopi Nah. If the Developer wants you stressed because that is part of the mechanic and difficulty then shouldn't the developer keep want their vision is? Adversely they could just make it so it times you and reward you based on the time, so you can still get the accomplishment for achieving victory and improving allows for a better reward so more incentive to get better.
@Hopischwopi
@Hopischwopi Жыл бұрын
@@DS-ld8ns there are different kinds of stress. If a game is advertised as stressfull I would already not buy it and in that case fair enough. But in general I am for accessibility and the developer are probably also interested in keeping the game fun for at least most players I hope. A certain kind of adrenaline and stress I am all there for but when it takes over and makes the game unenjoyable it would be nice to be able to have some kind of control. For example the souls game. Their concept is to be super hard and at times frustrating which I get that`s why I don`t play them. So in general I kinda agree but I also think it is nice when developers make their game open for a lot of people if their main focus isn`t totally wrecked. Puzzles can be hard if they are done good and maybe the option can be behind a barrier like "You have to try this puzzles at least 10 times before yo can turn off the timer." or something like that.

You know you have in a game 30 bullets in magazine and 90 reserve ammo, shoot once, reload (discard clip) and then you're left with 89 reserve ammo. Mafia is not like that. You shoot once reload and the lose 29 precious tommy gun bullets because the almost full magazine was discarded on the ground. It's terrible, but i like taking risks, it's part of the experience.

I feel like that's what makes Gameranx so much more enjoyable to watch over other gaming channels. They're both entertaining and non-cynical. Despite often having some arguably CLICKBAITY or at least EYECATCHY titles that use absolute terms, the content within the videos never state opinions in an objective fashion. Falcon, Jake B, etc never come off like they know more than their audience. They just come off like they have their own opinion, and always phrase those opinions in an open-minded way. One could argue this level of tolerance is an unchallenging, overly-neutral way to cover topics, but in a world where video game coverage is almost always sensationalized, I feel like there's merit in having a channel who represents gaming in a candid yet still passionate fashion. They aren't hype trains nor do they pretend to be journalists. And, while I'm not gonna pretend like a lot of their content is substantial, it is a refreshing take and maybe a teensy weensy bit poignant in how it presents its junkfood content in a way that at least _sounds_ interested in itself, and not just a guy reading a script, pretending to care.

I like the duality you make between realism and immersion, but I don't understand your reason behind why too much realism hurts. What I think is that too much realism may not be the answer for a game that wants to simulate and emulate a real-life activity, but the gameplay itself
@lc9245
@lc9245 Жыл бұрын
It’s fine if realism ties into the game main gameplay loop. An example would be those animals in Far Cry 3. For RDR2, it provided 1 good and 1 bad example. Brushing and feeding horse is a fun detail because it’s quick, painless, and it also enhances the goal of the game: to make player have fun being a cowboy, and a cowboy needs to bond with their horse. Then, they have the animal carcass rotting. That’s realism, but it also makes that activity much less enjoyable because it doesn’t really enhance the feeling being a cowboy.

Morrowind STARTS with your character only being able to do little hops, but your Acrobatics skill determined how high you could jump, as well as your carry weight. If you weren't weighed down by a ton of items and had a high Acrobatics skill, you could jump on to and across rooftops. You basically turn super human. But, of course, no one ever has an empty inventory in Morrowind, unless they're just starting the game.

Worth mentioning re the very last one - in many games, even ones that have minimap by default, disabling it adds enormous level of immersion... and sometimes challenge. Thinking GR Wildlands specifically for example. That said - I understand if people want to simply go marker to marker, and don't enjoy planning their trip before embarking. If anything, I think it'd be the best if most (all?) games had minimap/radar, but make it possible to switch it off for those that want it.

I think it depends on the kind of game. Mass Effect is a shooter RPG and as such the "getting to know your crew" is a pretty important part of it, but in games like the mentioned GTA IV it kind of keeps you away from the fun part of the game. Especially because in ME it's mostly dialogue and missions to help the crew and get a new power (optional) in GTA IV you're kind of forced to go along with it.

Yeah, I really like the navigation aspect when exploring. And in Subnautica (one of the examples given) it makes the world feel much bigger. Before long you have beacons and a compass anyway and if you can't navigate with those maybe you just don't like exploration in a game. I do think a nice touch for some games would be to have, instead of a smart GPS app full of automarkers style minimap, instead have the in-game equivalent of a paper map (maybe even hand drawn and inaccurate) that you can pull up (full screen) and write notes and put markers on yourself as you find things. That would kind of be an in-game record you made yourself of places you'd been and things you'd discovered/encountered. Would really help when picking up a game after not playing for awhile and just being able to look back on your journey.

It's not too much of an issue these days, but I'm always irked by games that don't have in-game help sections regarding controls, tutorials, etc. Similarly, games that don't have some sort of log to keep track of your objectives. Sometimes I just need to leave a game for awhile to play other things, but then finally coming back to it can be really intimidating if I need to scrape together information about what I've been doing and how to do certain things.

Bloodborne is probably my favourite game of all time, and one of the biggest gripes i have with it is their "help" tooltips in the menu. Like... i get it, it's not meant to spoon feed you everything, but in that and also DS3 at least, some of the things in the menu are so ill-defined or poorly explained that it makes it hard to even know what they do. For example, the "deep" status effect in DS3. When you go to the help tip for that item it simply tells you it allows you to imbue a weapon with "deep" status, and in the defence it just tells you what deep is effective/ineffective against. There's nowhere where it tells you what deep actually IS, what it does to enemies and how it works. And its the same for anything that isnt self explanatory by name.

I need to go back and give Mafia another shot. That said, IRL, I’ve been pulled over maybe three times? In like 20+ years of driving. Not every other block. Star Control 2 was another game with a time limit to finish the game. And that one was rough when it happened on my first playthrough, because I was not expecting it. It happened after I had made SO MUCH PROGRESS and put so much effort into it, only to suddenly have no hope of victory because I didn't keep any of my saves from early enough in the game. All I could do was watch hopelessly as the enemy fleet moved around the map, destroying everything in its path, powerless to do anything about it, and I had to start the entire game over again from scratch.

There is a game where the "panic" feature is it's defining feature. Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem for the GameCube(extremly underrated game btw) has a sanity meter and after you see enough scary stuff the meter fills and one of a large number of things can happen, examples include: a screen comes up saying your memory card is corrupted and it's deleting all data, your controller is unplugged while an enemy comes and attacks you till you die, tour head randomly falls off, arrows come out the walls and kills you and many more, then the screen goes black and it says "this can't be happening" and then you go back to where you were b4 it started as it was a hallucination. It does it at clever times as well like when you're going between rooms or after a loading screen and not immediate when the bar fills up so it's always surprising. Unlike that other games shown at #1 it doesn't have any real negative impact on gameplay though which is what makes it so good.

On the other hand ... a reviewer said something like "this is a world begging not just to be saved, but also to be *explored*," and constantly sweating over the hard deadline is no fun, and continually checking the guide to make sure you're on schedule isn't much fun either.

Gonna add one: RE Village's inventory shuffling. It's one thing to have an inventory limit. It's another to have a grid where the player has to move things around on it like a lame puzzle just so bigger items can fit. The realism doesn't apply evenly, either. For example: I ran across some magnum ammo, but had too much stuff in my inventory to pick it up, EVEN though the ammo was immediately going to be loaded into the gun. If the devs are hung up on realism enough to make you rearrange your "suitcase" of items, then why can't you set an item down for two seconds while reloading?

At that point I just legged it, managed to not be seen by the crew of a BMP that happened to climb the hill beside me and made it to the mission endpoint, only to be scolded that I only destroyed one enemy vehicle. The worst encumbrance I found was in H1Z1 (haven't played it in years so this might be out of date). You didn't have a carry weight, your clothes did. Even games known for unforgiving carry weights let you pick up a weapon or two in your back pocket. When I played H1Z1 it didn't have 'hardcore' weight limits, it went all in. You can fit a handful of 9mm rounds in your shirt pocket, maybe a few snacks in your jeans but that's it. Good luck finding a backpack though. The lack of carry capacity is 'balanced' by the scarcity of the loot, or at least it would be if you could actually carry the one item you found in two hours that wasn't nailed down.

Most of these really add up to the immersion. Especially the time limit. I like to explore and experience that world that the developers spent countless hours designing! But the one thing I can think of that is really a burden instead of a feature is having to go back to complete something. I'm looking at you, new Tomb Raider installments! In the first few chapters there will always be a tomb, a door or a wall that you can't open/cross/climb because your equipment isn't fully upgraded yet and you have to go back later in the game. If I spent endless hours trying to complete all the different little challenges that each area has before I move on to the next, I don't wanna go back for the last little detail. It feels repetitive and worn out. Just give all the tools I need and a good enough challenge and I'll be happy to finish 100% of each area the first time!

This is quite a common thing that developers add so that they add a lot of "replayability" within your save file. Having to go back with better equipment and such makes it so that you play more of the game, obviously. It's as you said, these guys spent countless of hours designing these things. It's a standardized thing in LEGO games for example. Having to go back once you've unlocked a character so that you can go to an area an get that minikit. Personally, I don't dislike it. It really depends on the game though. Some can be really tedious. But in the end, unless you're forced to go back which a lot of games don't do, you can just skip it and do the main story and be happy with that as your playthrough. I think it's understandable and can be fun but it can also be abused and poorly implemented.

Starts by saying "these things are okay in simulation games" and ends up pointing out cleaning in Sims games :V So coherent!

Great list! But what about limited breath under water. Damn it limits exploration in some games.

I'm pretty sure they fixed the mission in Mafia where you move the boxes. In Mafia: Definitive Edition you just had to move one box if i'm not wrong.

Well, the whole mission is completely different. I believe you don't even need to manually lift any boxes at all and everything is handled in a cutscene.

@@Agreel Yeah I think your right you just find it and cutscene handles the rest.

Weight limits are my pet peeve with games. Especially when the game your playing gives you a ton of cool weapons/armour options but gives you a limit on storage either on your character or in a stash. If your game has random loot and multiple versions of each drop at least give me unlimited storage for all the cool drops. I don’t want to have to decide which cool weapon or armour to drop whenever I loot a chest or body.
