A point to remember when talking about Steam Refunds, the 2 hour/2 week limit is only for automatic refunds. You can still reach out to Steam and they can make refunds on a case by case basis. So if you were to buy a Helldivers 2 shovelware clone and not boot it up for a couple of weeks, you could still get the refund, it just might take a few more steps and some intervention from Steam Support. It's not an end all, be all, just the automatic process vs manual intervention.

Don't forget H1Z1 that was a Survival game and a Battle Royal type game. Then they split the game into two free to play games that were broken. Shatterline needs to be added to this list. Was in early access for 2 years selling season passes and cosmetics, then all of a sudden announced that they were removing it from steam to be added to Epic games and partnering with Faraway to introduce NFTs to the game. Then it was revealed that it was always a part of the plan to introduce NFTs to the game and the devs were using all the players in discord to beta test the game for free, and banning anyone from the discord who spoke negatively about NFTs, including staff and mods. Nothing will be carried over to Epic on the full launch of the game so any existing players will start from scratch.

This. People need to know about that, if they get through with that and get a somewhat good playerbase in the future we all know that other companies will just follow at least the removing it & re-selling it part. Worst part is that I expected Nintendo to be the first to pull something along those lines given that everything for (and including the firmware itself) the Switch is licensed on a revocable basis by just telling people to buy a new console & the games again, I'm almost willing to bet that they're watching how this case plays out really close.

Maybe I'm just being too nice here but I'm leaning towards "The Day Before" as being a case where the devs were just way too ambitious and simply weren't able to create what they had hoped to create. Sure they should have simply been honest about their shortcomings but that's easy to say in hindsight. On the other side of the coin to me is Star Citizen. It's the only time I've ever gone the kickstarter route and thank goodness I went for the minimum. It's vapourware and they have no excuses left. From the outside at least, it seems like they've spent 90% of their MASSIVE amounts of money on trying to get more money by promising yet another in the VERY long list of new and "exciting" ships .... for an extra fee. It would be lovely if they stopped trying to get more money by making more vanity ships and actually worked on finishing that hot mess.

You could technically add Rise of Man to that list. It's still up on the Steam store and conning people into buying it but you essentially can't get much further than the opening area and there has been no developer communication since 2017. Reporting/flagging it on Steam seems to get no attention and buyers simply lose their money. Lots of reviews stating the same and Steam still keeps it in the store.

I was so hyped for "The Day Before." But I accept that disappointment is a part of life.

For the number 8, maybe they hoped that the players would like their game enough that they won't care it wasn't actually Helldivers. Soulja Boy used this technique to get Superman into a hit song. He uploaded it to MP3 downlaod sites under the name ofa hit song at the time. People would download it thinking it was, say a 50 Cent song, play it, realise it wasn't actually a 50 Cent song, but would keep playing it because they enjoyed the song enough to look past the fact they were originally duped.

KS : I really need some convincing to back a tabletop game, and it's either miniatures or a revised version of a game that is hard to get retail. Given how a retail videogame can run over budget or be delayed, plus the availability of video games already available on the market, I'd be hard pressed to back a video game, except one that's a spiritual successor. What makes you back a video game?

Oh man I i remember being really excited for Project Phoenix when I first found it. It sounded interesting with all the big names behind it and it looked to have combat that reminded me of Growlanser. But then it imploded spectacularly.

The MW3 reboot was a $70 MW2 DLC. They just released what was originally marketed for MW2. Arguably Activision’s biggest cash grab and isn’t talked ab enough

I'm surprised that "Hellgate London" wasn't on this list. They got the game up and running, looked, and played really nice. Then they drop the servers and everyone is shyt outta luck. They could at least released the server info so people could at least try to run their own servers.

Never thought I'd see Red Eclipse mentioned in a GameRanx video. One of the games I played in college by virtue of it being free in every way and I was broke.

I’ll carry on playing project zomboid, AMAZING game with hundreds of mods, and unlimited freedoms, can make it really challenging or easy as you like customising to your taste and the devs update regularly with fresh ideas, adding hole new towns to explore and the devs actually care, don’t need many other games IMO

I like how Helldivers 2 is like the poster child for 'online game that didn't screw over people'
