It's not the worst game ever made. But if they switched out the characters and called it anything besides "Final Fantasy VII Remake" it would be a 6 out of 10 JRPG. The game has tons of problems with pacing, and filler content, and a clunky not fun to use battle system. The whole plot point with the ghost is also incredibly stupid.

For real, though; this remake has a lot of issues - I mean, a LOT of issues - but it's still fun and it _is_ (basically) FFVII with great graphics and a real-time battle system. I still enjoy it, but it definitely bugs the shit out of me. A few additions wouldn't have been the end of the world - I still hope they add a fishing system and a card game to the next disc - but the things they changed or omitted are pretty annoying, and the things they DID add suck ass and drastically change the story. Rip-off Dementors and Super Sephiroth have no business being there, and it bothers me. I guess a faithful remake was too much for us to expect lol

My big problem with this game is: I haven’t played the original. Back there I was a child and my parents had no money to buy me a ps1. Final fantasy vii remake is not for new players. The flashbacks/flash fowards means nothing for new players, sephiroth, jenova, zack. Everything the game throw at us is for old players. I’m really disappointed. I feel like I played 40 hours for nothing.

I’m confused. You said you wanted to grind, but then you say the game is too long. You said some people beat the game in 25 hours, but it took you 50. So which is it? Do you want a short game or do you want to grind? And you can redo the VR missions, so there’s your grinding right there...or did you skip that cutscene? You don’t like the gauntlet of boss fights when the OG has nearly the same series of boss fights. Not to mention most games have you fight several bosses in a row during the finale, like the OG. So are you a fan of the original or not? And the ghost kids...did you forget that Shinra hadn’t attacked Avalanche yet when Cloud and the others first enter the train yards, and that the ghost kids were literally blocking our heroes from progressing and asking them for help from the spectre holding them captive? Or did you skip that cutscene?

I think what he was saying was that there was too much padding in the game. It was long because there was a TON of cutscenes, fetch quests and filler storylines. There's also a lot of back tracking between the sectors at time. I also have the same gripe with the Train Graveyard storyline. In the OG, it took around 5-10 minutes to get through it and move on to Sector 7. You could stick around searching for Eligor for Aeris' weapon but otherwise, it wasn't a drawn out thing. It was urgent that you hurry to Sector 7. The fact that this whole storyline that takes at least an hour to get through involving these kids takes away from that. It was no more than a manditory sidequest. It should have just been an optional side quest.

I'm a huge fan of the original game so when I played the remake and the fact they took out the open world aspect and turn based combat ruined the game completely for me. @Aaron9 no the music is NOT better. the only songs that have been good were the airbuster fight, and the rooftop escape melody with aerith as their chatting and traversing the roofs. Most of the music in this game completely kills the ambience(there isnt any) and is mostly OVER produced. the music should not be fighting for your attention in a videogame. In a big boss fight it makes sense to have some tension. But this game is constantly creating tension with the music where it shouldnt be. There were large sections of the game i wish were completely muted because the music was taking so much away from the environment and the dialogue. Video game music done this way comes off like their trying to justify their large production values when it has been proven timelessly that less is more and ambience can do all the heavy lifting to set the mood. Look at the demon's souls remake soundtrack, they did the same crap over produced overly cinematic music that completely changed the entire feeling of the whole game. none of it is memorable at all compared to the 2009 game.

Hate it. The facial animations were as bad as Andromeda. I liked it when she says " You distract the guards while I figure something out", then we go straight into battle, or how about when you're in the bar and have to play the jute box, and throw darts to proceed in the story. She comes up, takes a shot, sits down, and he says" I heard you were having second thoughts". What? From who? When? It stays like that. The voice acting also reminded me of Andromeda, very disconnected, like they were in different locations. Reviewers said this games is one of the most beautiful and detailed game worlds ever made. Really? Are you serious? Did someone pay them to say that.? I call BS. Not even when compared to much older games. But the worst part is the complete disconnect from the original game. Late to the party. I finally finished it, it took me a long time to beat because I just got bored and walked away from it about halfway through. Been forcing myself to finish it. The problem is the expanded story adds nothing of narrative value and all the side quests are garbage tier. I enjoyed the combat, but without a compelling reason to engage in combat outside of story progression leads to that feeling you described about trying to enjoy this game. Why expand Midgar and go this route when the game seems to just.. encourage you to power through the story anyways. I don't think it is a bad game, it's just a remake of one of the most beloved games of all time so it is wrenched full of emotional attachment to the original game that just gets shit on by SE through the course of this telling. The biggest detractor for me is half the textures in the game aren't even finished and it's been out long enough SE hasn't addressed a patch or any fixes or improvements coming. Some sections of the slums if you run full speed never even fully load as you run by, it just runs and looks terrible at times. All the good textures are ruined by a terrible half resolution one next to it.

No need to travel to Nibelheim, Cosmo Canyon, Fort Condor, Costa del Sol, or the City of the Ancients, because Sephiroth can and did already summon Meteor and doesn't care about finding out who he is; no need for the Black Materia and no need to search for his backstory. Squeenix cant develop good games anymore, they are all gimmicky cash grabs, even FF14 is a WOW ripoff after it intially failed. I absolutely loved it at first. Until I discovered you couldn't grind and if you did, it didn't matter because everything scales up or down to match you one way or the other. Then the stupidity of the STB bar, why not just do it like Kingdom Hearts did? That was not only the same company, but the same friggin lead designer. Why re-invent the wheel? And then the whole stagger mechanic, which ends up being useless most of the time or a sort of end battle things. And the game is so focussed on this one mechanic and this one approach that you HAVE to use it. It's one giant game of 'Get up on the Hydra's back' . And how did you guys manage to make my favorite character 'Tifa' actually becoming not only my least favorite character, but a disliked character, is beyond me. Really. Original Cloud was a smart calculated mofo, this Cloud is like Goku. Strong and dumb as a tree trunk.

I actually completely check out when the game goes into it's 20th cutscene in just 30 minutes! - The ridiculous amount of cutscenes(even in the middle of boss fights!!!) - The forced slow walking of the main character(just why!!!!) - The annoying female characters. - some of the worst side quests in a video game. - that fact that the game just doesn't let you enjoy its combat without constantly cutting you off with forced dialogues and cutscenes. - I know it's the Unreal engine and textures load late, but what about the low resolution of 60% of the environment and NPCs?! Arkham knight used the same engine and an open world and look 100 times better than this game! I've never played the original, so I have no nostalgia and I know if this game had any name other than FFVII everybody would've hated it for all of its flaws. FFXV had some problems but it was so much better than this garbage! I'm so glad I didn't buy this game and just got it on my PS plus extra.

Definitely living in a world of nostalgia. The older crowd will never be pleased with a remake EVER. As someone who hasn't played the original but owns it, I really enjoyed the remake for what it was and the dlc was fun as hell too. This combat is so much more engaging than older turn based. The characters are brought to life, Midgar is fully realized, they switch up some story elements but of course the OG fans are not satisfied because they messed around with the story. Is there some obvious padding here and there that's a little slow? Sure. These boss fights are fun as hell. I got the platinum recently and hard mode was such a good challenge.

It annoyed me something fierce how happy clappy the people of the slums and how BRIGHT they were. The E3 2015 trailer had a little sliver of light come down to the slums between the plates to the favelas below, looked so much more sketchy and dangerous in perpetual night. Like you were stepping over needles. Tonally a lot of the game felt off even besides the whispers.

Yeah it’s literally the worst game I’ve ever played too. This is the progression in a nutshell. Walk slow, cutscene, walk slow again, cutscene, cutscene, cutscene, non-canon cutscene, walk slow, cheesy stupid fight with the Turks you lose no matter what first try then somehow win effortlessly on retry, cutscene, non-canon fight and cutscene, walk down linear hallway levels for 2 hours straight, cutscene, end game, wait 2 years for next episode. I got this garbage on sale and it’s still not worth it. The combat is a cheap ripoff of final fantasy 15, which was actually a good game they released IN FULL for $60. If this was FF7, it would be turn based not this button masher garbage. One attack button lmfao 😂 for the simple minded people that this style of game design targets

the problem is it isnt a bad game but it is compared to the original. Barretts character is driven by anger and this is amplified by the death of fellow avalanche members. Clouds head is literally fucked by Zacks death and this dont seem to matter this time.Sephiroth and Jenova was a mystery in FF7. Also not sure how wedge and biggs can alter their fate but when barrett is killed plot armour appears no gotta keep the original timeline. NO ONE wanted a big alteration. I can tolerate the combat system although a tactical turn based rpg is more my vibe but i can still play the original. Slihjt changes and surprises would be cool but not when it comes to characters motivations etc.

I much agree with you. Feel like the remake took advantage of the original to satisfy the FF VII game who much expected the remake. The gameplay was so lacking and having no re-play value whatsoever, the item and magic was so limited and small, the camera was suck, giving me confusion and headache because it was too close, the movement was slow, even sometime the characters move even slower for no reason, the side quests were basically no where, the story telling was confusing and having many plotholes, the graphic was great but there was no scenary in the game to enjoy and the camera made it worse, the battle system was no boring. I felt like fans praising this game because they were hardcore of the original game who had waited for the remake for so long to the point that they accepted this suck remake since it looked beautiful in graphic

Jessie are for exampel wundering when they are back at seven Heven how it could be that big hit. So what happens in Remake are really what happens in the original.

Jessi is surprised at the size and devastation of the explosion, but there is ZERO evidence that Avalanche went into without expecting casualties and ZERO evidence that Shinra did the first reactor. In the remake the amount of damage done by Avalanche looks like the reactor would be out of commission for like half a day. Please site the exact lines that make you think Shinra blew up the reactor in the original… I will admit if I missed that in the 20+ times I’ve played the original. The conflict Barret feels about his actions is the crux of his story arc. The remake did some good additions to that it some scenes, but absolutely destroyed his arc in many more. I’m glad you enjoyed the remake. I envy you for that, but don’t ruin the integrity of the original with the absolute non stakes of the remake.

The line are Jessie: Hey, look at the news... What a blast. Think it was all because of my bomb? But all I really did was just make it like the computer told me. Oh no! I must've made a miscalculation somewhere..... So something happend that was out of Avalanche control. And the best locally exploration is that Shinra has something to do whit it. As Avalanche are ambused when they are in the nexst reactor. And it is what Squere Exin have chosen to show / teliing the story in their reamke of the game. As they now can show what an impact the bomb really was. And that was not possible to do whit the reconlly that they have when the original was released. And as they are the developers. How now have the chance to tell the story whit out any bonderies. That the have whit the original.

You find this out if you speak to her after the bombing while she is shaking her head at her desk back at the hideout. She feels sort of bad for how big the blast was. But it WAS her bomb. It wasn't some Machiavellian play by Shinra. That was the part they changed for the "remake".

Got randomly recommended this now 4 years after the game came out. I liked the game but you do bring up a lot of good criticisms. The only weird thing is I dunno how it took you so long to beat the game. I did all the side missions and I think it only took me like 30 hours. You should play Rebirth. @@GameRatingReview but if you guys think about it, in the origional 7 game, you had an atb bar just the same, had to wait for it to fill up none the less before you could attack, cast magic or even use an item :o then you have to wait for the atb bar to refill again, they kept it the same... even gave you another atb bar so you could potentially have 2 "turns" back to back in ff7r, 3 with the one materia thats a limit break aswell, so you could have 3 "turns" so they did keep it the same, and it hasnt been true turn based since ff3 :o, they added the atb bars in ff4 ^^

The linear part is a fair critique. I don't mind my games not being open world. Every game doesn't need to be Genshin Impact, but some of the traversal of corridors was really boring. Pull a lever, walk backwards, boring. The minigames were awful. This whole portion of the story vs the original was very much stretched out. The characters that die/don't die did suck the heaviness out of those moments. Also you have to consider that a lot of character development is just not a thing in this game given the remake is three parts, with many key plot points happening later. Voice acting could have been better for Barrett and Sephiroth. Otherwise the VA's were exceptional. RE the grinding, you didn't really grind much during the sections of the original game that are also covered in the remake. The grinding and open world came after Midgar. I guess that holds this game back a lot for some, I didn't mind it being in chunks. Too much side character scenes/plot is true, granted there was a ton of dialog you could optionally encounter in the OG game. The Yakuza comparison was really unfair considering you fought Rufus in OG FF7 in the exact same setting. Your rant is overall not totally incorrect or unfair, but some of it was off base!

About Rufus, it's a super easy boss fight, but it's a gimmick one. If you don't find the gimmick, you will suffer. You need to use "Counterstance" and only attack the dog when they are disconnected. Once the dog is out, just block and dodge until you get a limit and then it's over. Basicallty, you block 95% of the fight.

Tho everyone is diffrent, and there is no game that will match everyone. I think its just lack in experience in JRPG genre.

Many good points has already been brought up. Want to add another pain point. Many times the game treat you like a kid that needs to be held in the hand and shown how to do things. In one section of the game you are tasked to find a specific person and are told about a secret phrase they will use to identify themselves. You think "got it. Lets find this secret person". Then you are reminded like 3 times by your party what you are supposed to do and how in the next 5 minutes. When you eventually see the person you can see that the person has a quest indicator on top of his head. On top of all of this, there is a character that you can pay 5000 gil to give you a hint to the puzzle. The game completely took even the illusion of a challenge away from the whole thing. Might as well have made the whole searching for the person into a cut-scene. This feeling of being treated like a little kid I got many times while playing the game. In the original, you actually have to do some thinking for yourself. But it was never too hard. Just enough to feel some sense of accomplishment. Insulting is what it is.

The trope I'm talking about where games treat the player as 4 year old kids has little to do with humour. It is something that has become the standard in many Japanese games the last decade. They don't do it for humour. They simply are afraid that people will not enjoy the game and stop playing if they are unable to progress in it smoothly. But that takes away much of the fun in games. That my comment might be rubbish I will not argue against. I needed to vent my frustration over the game somewhere. And everyone I know would probably suffer a stroke if they listened to my rant. So I turned to the internet for my therapy. I appreciate someone even took their time to read it. :D

Actually, in hard mode you get to experience the battle system in a different way which makes you discover new strategy. There's so many build you can come up with. The battle system has a lot of depth.

You can easily dodge, and pressure the enemy really fast and once you stagger them they're done with true strike followed with star shower or dive kick. nah dude, im with you... They took my first love, my favorite game... and they performed unnatural, horrifying acts to it. They took my baby, and they gutted it for everything they could. OG FF7 had one of the greatest stories of all the FF games. It had loss that made you feel something. It had high stakes at the start that just kept getting higher as you learned how small your bs with a fascist organization was and that the real threats were so much worse. THIS GAME... turns an OPTIONAL quirky side mission to go into honey bee inn for some pantie, into a NON SKIPPABLE DDR mission. It takes the kinda awkward tech specialist girl with a crush that dies without you ever getting to know her (Jessie) and legit forces you to meet her friggin parents, and learn about her whole entire life... OG Jessie was a mystery and i wanted to save her... This Jessie... I just wanted it to end.. Theres so much extra side crap that they put in this game that never happened in the original that quite literally changes the story, and several details about several characters, side and main... Its an absolute S**tshow....

I tend to agree with you having just finished the game in 2022. My biggest problem is how they completely ruined Sephiroth as an intimidating, mysterious character. The fact that he shows up as fan service in chapter 2 before new players are supposed to even know who he is, man, that was disgusting and ruins his character. Then, at the end we fight both God and Sephiroth!? What the hell is next in parts 2 & 3? There’s no way those fights can be topped without more stupid KH bs. I’m with you, I’m not buying the sequels and I’m done with Square. I thought I was done after FF12 years ago, but now I’m really done. I don’t care about FF16 or the FF7R sequels, I’ll just go back and play the good FF games when they were still turn based.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake was amazing and a masterpiece of a game. That's coming from someone who's NEVER played a Final Fantasy game before but this game got me interested to play more FF games because of the story and lovely intertwined story arches and mystery for the future of the planet.

The thing is, they make the games “look” so good, combine that with Nostalgia, 20 years drought (and reasoning: if they invested that much in graphics ... the game must be good, right?) Somewhere along the way of perfecting hair physics, Square completely lost all talent for actual enjoyable Game Play, and the importance of it. (I started hating it once I realized there were no random encounters ... it becomes “on rails” , and looses replay ability)

Cloud Strife nope, that is only 1 thing at the tip of the iceberg... the BS “arbiters of fate”, the Kingdom Hearts-like boss battle at the end, bs alternate universes/timelines (because the plot is so fucked, we don’t know which one), Sephiroth fan service ... I could write an essay. When you have people seriously questioning, if Aerith will actually die, you no longer have a re-make, but a re-imagining on Advent Children/Crisis Core levels (no random battles , was touching on the lack of replay ability , and the lack of encounter diversity on said play throughs... outside of the colosseum, your exp is planned and drip fed, unless you back track and wait on timers)

The "corridor" environments you run around in are not event trying to be believable many times. Like when in the garage, there is soooo many boxes and cars littering the place to form a perfect impenetrable corridor for you and your party to walk in. How did the cars even manage to park in that way, and what are all these boxes doing everywhere. It is almost as if the game needs to create some kind of explanation for it. Like "there is this big relocation of equipment project going on, so the garage is a little bit messy" or something. Lots of other environments that completely broke my immersion by lazy repetitive corridor design.

Overall I have to say I like the game but you make some good points. Totally agree that there is too many boss fights, particularly near the end. Chapter 17 to the end, kind of turned this game from a 9 to an 8, maybe even 7.5. I hate how they force you to fight 7 boss fights in a row all the way to the end. That would be Swordipede, Jenova, Rufus (which was a stupid badly made fight), Arsenal, Motor Ball, Harbinger and Sephiroth. All these guys you fight in a row until the end which I found to be completely frustrating and idiotic on Square Enix's part. Should be some area to explore and fight normal enemies in between bosses.

This is for me also the worst part... I like challenges but this end stuff was fucking annoying. The combat on the mortorcycle was so bad. I felt like all these bossfight have to be as hard as it could only to get more gameplay time. I came til Sephiroth and then his last phase... I didn't want anymore. I really wanted to like this game but these bossfights at the end really ruin it for me. I don't know why but the dodge or the blocks never works. I can press the button as much as I want you get damage nevertheless. I hate it.

It’s really unfortunate. If they honestly would have just remade ff7 it would have been phenomenal. The old story was amazing and what drew so many people in.
