NVIDIA's RTX 3090 Ti GPU launched today, but supply is extremely low due to shutdowns in Shenzhen. The EVGA RTX 3090 Ti is one of the few cards out in the first wave.

Watch the tear-down here! • The 3090 Ti Heat Probl...
In this review, we're looking at the RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 that EVGA sent over. The card gets benchmarks for power, thermals, and gaming performance vs. the RTX 3090 non-Ti, RTX 3080, RX 6900 XT, and a few more. We also spent some time overclocking the card. Overall, as it's an ultra high-end enthusiast card, we'll probably spend more time with this under liquid nitrogen once we can get an unlocked VBIOS!
We got this card only 2 full days before launch, so we crammed as many tests in as we could (with a particular focus on thermals and power, given the 450W TDP of the stock 3090 Ti). This was what we could pull together in those two days. We have more we want to do, and that's true basically in every review, but this will help people considering an early purchase of the 3090 Ti.

You've hit the nail on the head with that comment about knowing the market will just buy the more expensive option if stock is available, that technique clearly sold a boat load of 3090's to people that really only wanted a 3080 but got sick of waiting and watching prices rise

Guilty, needed a new card last winter and the only cards in stock was GTX1650 or RTX3090. As GTX1650 is nowhere near the performance I need the only option was to buy a RTX3090. Wattage pulled shows around 385w when undervolted. Overall quite happy. @Green Mamba Games because frequency and power consumption does not scale in a linear way. When you increase frequency, you have to increase voltage as well, and power consumption is calculated like this : power = capacitance * voltage^2 * frequency. In other words, this mean power = frequency^3.

Yeah depends a lot on what you pay for electricity. I pay about 0,14€/kWh including tax, so running a 3090 Ti for 5 hours per day for a year would cost me 5h/day x 365days/year x 0,5kW x 0,14€/kWh = 128€/year Comparing that to my 3080 with a 320W power draw: 5h/day x 365days/year x 0,32kW x 0,14€/kWh = 82€/year The price difference is kinda negligible at my energy price (luckily I got a flat rate two year contract last summer, and the contract came into effect in October). I have no idea how much electricity costs in the US or other countries, but you can just plug your own cost of electricity in your currency into that equation and get your own price.

Yup, I really hope people won't buy the 4000 series high end cards. There's actually not as much of a need for them performance wise and certainly not for performance per watt. You want 1440p high refresh rate with most modern games? Or 4K60ing ridiculously modded games? You already got that with 3000's high end. 1440p still remains a sweetspot for high end high refresh rate gaming, so even when budget is not an issue you SHOULDN'T buy the 4000 series purely from a power consumption and cooling perspective - you'll be heating your room like a motherfucker. I REALLY hope 4000 series flops

Ah yes, the obligatory super expensive release right before the next gen is unleashed that will stomp the crap out of this for much less money. This would be like if Apple released an iPhone 13 Pro Ti for $2000 a month before releasing the iPhone 14 Pro for $1000 and the 14 Pro stomps the 13 Pro Ti.
@Mattribute
@Mattribute 2 жыл бұрын
Sadly that is not what has happened. The 2080Ti did not stomp the $600 1080Ti for less money. It didn’t even stomp it really. Like plus 22% for 2x the price. Then the 3080 came out but they were $1500-$1800 for a very long time. Lovelace will probably claim +60% faster but actually be +35% and consume prohibitive amounts of power at the high end. Like circuit breakers tripping is going to be a problem at those levels. Hopefully AMD and intel will produce something that’s meaningful.

I have built myself several PCs since 2010 and it's quite concerning how the priorities have changed for me. All i used to care about was Price/Performance for CPU and GFX card and wattage wasn't even a factor until i bought 2080ti in 2018 and 250W seemed like a tad bit too high but i did bite it anyways. Then i bought a G9 monitor and needed more horse power, so went for a 3080ti as i wanted to keep it under 350W no matter what and ditched 3090 !! (350w was still very high for me). Now we are at 500W territory ! Now a days when looking at GFX Cards first thing i look at is the wattage , then performance and lastly price ! Also my room already warms up quite abit after playing for a few hours and im genuinely terrified of next gen flagship cards.

Plus how big are heatsinks gonna get ? Im not a watercooling fan and never been and its been aircooler for me all the way. ! Are we looking at triple slot 38-40 Cms length heatsinks too cooldown 500-600w GFX cards ? That makes almost all the mid towers and quite a number of full tower cases obsolete and so on. With power consumption going up and up, I don't want what is practically a space-heater in the room while I'm gaming in warmer months, so I use Afterburner or the like to set the PL to something more reasonable. @@redclaw72666 that's really not the point. It's to try and see how efficient the cards are. If a 3090 performs the same as a 3080 at the same power limit, then it means a crazy OCer can do a power mod on a 3080 and get it to perform close to a 3090 - which is an interesting prospect. Also, water cooling or air cooling isn't going to make a difference. The same amount of heat still enters the room. In fact water cooling is more efficient at removing heat from your system, thus more heat will enter your room quicker. Literally isn't solving anything by changing the type of cooling in your PC.

Why just 2 PSUs? Why not 3? If you rock a Intel 12900K overclocked and this Nvidia Volcano, 2 PSUs might be tight.

You are right to add focus on the fast transients, these are some of the harder things to stop going right through the EMC protection of devices and can be KV in height and occur at any phase. Ahead of the game here with better conducted emission performance .

Nvidia's power consumption has become really stupid. They have become the new Pentium 4.

The reality is that gamers are very tolerant of extreme power consumption and heat output. Accepting, even. It's psychological reinforcement that they've got an extreme gaming computer.

@@jimtekkit Tbh haven't high end gamers mostly always been that way? Before stupid GPU's like this came out it was multi-gpu setups, and before that it was 3dfx making you need a seperate psu for a gpu they never got out so man idk.

Well overclocking a pentium 4 is more fun and less risky. It offers the same space heating qualities for a tiny fraction of the cost and more significant clock increases until the system is unstable 😂🤣

I guess I'll just use the budget I wanted to allocate for my gpu, to get DDR5. A 2070S still holds up anyway.

Hope you get to do content on transient spikes. I had to switch from my old but trusty Antec TP750 to an FSP Hydro G Pro 750W when I upgraded to an RTX 3070. Same wattage, but the TP750 randomly led to shutdowns. I used to run GTX 660 Ti SLI on that but now it can't handle a single card with a lower overall TDP. Quite the mystery.

Would love to see how undervolting the 3090 Ti compares to other RTX-30 series card (which don't seem to have a lot of OC headroom without something exotic like LN2 cooling).

Hey I'm curious, I'll preface by saying I understand the tests are completely valid etc, however over the years the CPUs used in GPU tests have often not been the bleeding edge latest CPUs, I remember when the 8086k was used when the 9900k was released and obviously this testing was done with a 10700k instead of say a 12700k, my question is, at a certain point you make the decision to 'upgrade' the CPU for the GPU bench, what's the main factor in deciding when to move on to a new CPU? Obviously heaps of work to re-test data when that happens.

Right about now were hitting that wall you mentioned. With some 4k and a lot of 1440p stuff, even the i9-10900k is bottlenecking the 3090ti, However, the benchmarks and test also need to stay relevant to the viewers. Like he said... Nobody games at 8k... Numbers show Most dont even game at 1440p... so i guess my answer is when it "makes the most sense for the viewers/consumers" to have to rerun tests against the new CPU bench.

Generally when the GPU's hit a performance level that the CPU becomes a bottleneck and makes it impossible to differentiate the GPU's.
