Crazy good work, Steve. You're a machine. Honestly don't know how you're able to bench everything, make a video, and write your incredibly detailed articles within the window of receiving the cards and the embargo. You are a wizard. Best review on KZbin.

I would still pick the RX 480 and heres why: 1) Don't need to pay for G-sync. That alone saves me $200. 2) DX12/Vulkan/CrossFire support. 3) AMD open source contribution. 4) No expensive "Founders" bullshit. 5) No shady business practice like Ngreedia. 6) The RX 480 is $379 AUD and the GTX 1060 is $500 >_>

1) Nvidia has gameworks open source. 2) this is what DX12 with Async Compute looks like when it doesn't have the AMD logo on the front www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/palit_geforce_gtx_1060_super_jetstream_review,28.html 3) founders hasn't effected 1060s so far, but it is BS on the 1070 and 1080 4) yeah because AMD would never... Async compute is cool, but honestly the 480 is the #4 card even in AMD's stack. What are the chances it can last 2 years in AAA games when it is already middle of the pack?

Well since this is the "budget" card it makes sense to compare the aftermarket 1060 with the reference RX480. They are in the same price range, so a comparison is completely valid. RX480 owners simply want to cherry pick the reviews that favour their card the most.

Note: Table should read 6GB for memory capacity on the GTX 1060. Also, this is related but wasn't in the video (but is in the article): There is no 3GB model. There were rumors that one would exist, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

Thank you for this review. I want you to know I have 20+ "techtuber" accounts I'm subbed to on youtube and this is my go to channel for reliable information. Other channels have 7 minute videos with 3 minutes worth of ads and they display the average fps of 4 games and a quick temp chart. Keep up the good work man, you really are making your way up the ranks. BTW having the web article to further explain every video is something very few others have, and when they do they just make a video that is a recording of the article.

i know im not him, but if you're upgrading from a 970, save the extra 125-175~ (usd) and get a 1070. To buy a new gpu that is about 15% faster will have you asking this question again in the not too distant future. If your concern is power draw and/or heat for say a sff system, then yes it is 100% worth it.

Hello Maltazer, ended getting the RX480. I'm happy I made that choice (quality and performance wise). Though like everyone say everywhere, it sure overheats as hell. So I only recommend partners cards with good cooling fans. And you might want to make sure your tower case has enough room and allows a good cable management for the air to flow smoothly. I also installed a light monitoring software to track temperatures, just for my peace of mind =) And you, which one are you going for ?

@razamatraz1
@razamatraz1 8 жыл бұрын
Everyone thinks that, and I agree they should have left it in but in reality if you buy the second card within 6 months you should have just bought a 1080 in the first place and if you buy it in a year there will be new cards. There have been very few cases where SLI made sense from a $ perspective. Maybe the 670, maybe the 970.

I pray that Gamers Nexus notices this, but you guys are by far the best reviewer out there. Some say that you put too much information and its hard to understand, but I say if it gives a true and close to realistic preformance, then learn the metrics. Its better then just giving out avg fps, max and mins. Everybody should adopt the same metrics you guys adopted. For every consumer's benifit. You guys also arent biased *cough cough linus* and provide benchmarks that entail new gpu and api tech. Which is by far better for future proofing and ensuring that the card doesnt get outpreformed. While people like to argue about which is better, I say "Who cares?". If you want a good oc card with good specs at launch then go nv. If you are on a budget and most are already, then look to future proof, as that can delay the amount of time needed to buy a new card. Then go amd as they have showed with vulcan that it can compete with a 1070. I will admit that I favor more towards amd's side as I cant afford a brand new card each year as most nvdia users are saying. You are the first tech reviewer ever to earn my sub. And Ive been watching tech reviews for 2 years. Ive only seen your channel for 4 days at that. Please keep up the good work! Also regarding the 1060, did the label on the side light up? As it seems some did and others did not.

hey guys, extensive review you've made there (and by far the best i've seen yet). thanks for that! did you rebench the 480 with the "after power gate"-drivers? i think most of the frame pacing issues came from highly volatile clockrates with the initial drivers. i don't think that's representative anymore as far as the 1% and 0.1% lows go.

i gotta say, the reference model RX 480 is doing pretty well vs an aib 1060. When an API (DX12) comes out and enhances a cards performance like that it makes me curious to see how future titles will perform. That's not even talking about what Vulkan might be capable of. That said the 1060 is a damn good card.

Why you didn't include the Doom benchmark in the video? I would think that showcasing the only game with a good implementation of Vulkan and OpenGL would be something people would want to see. I guess it's the same as it was for the Fury X GPU: Buy a 1060 if you play DX11 games like The Division, prefer higher clock speeds with superior thermals, and find comfort in knowing that nVidia have consistently tighter frame times. Or buy the RX480 if you play DX12 games like Hitman and Total War Warhammer and favour slightly cheaper price and don't mind sacrificing a few things in order to invest in a longer lasting (theoretically and practically) GPU. Also, the RX480 might provide a better VR experience, I'm not sure.

if SMP is all that NVidia makes it out to be, then there is no way the rx480 will be better than the gtx1060 at VR (assuming its easily implementable in engines and titles). GN, please bench SMP VR titles as soon as theyre released! we already have a baseline comparison between the rx480 and gtx1060, so there should be a predictable difference when playing VR titles, and so the SMP boost should hopefully be obvious, assuming there will be a boost

Ended up purchasing a 1070 and have to say, it was much worth it! I ended up buying a 27" 144hz 1440p monitor with it and it's incredible. I wouldn't say a 1070 can run a game at 4k though. Not if you want to make use of a 144hz monitor. A 1070 would struggle with some games running it at 4k I believe. Although I could be wrong. However, the 1070 is absolutely perfect for 1440p gaming. Also, there isn't much of a reason to get a 4k monitor *in my opinion*. Personally, I don't notice the difference between 4k and 1440p with MOVING objects... if I sit still and get closer to the monitor, sure, anyone can notice a difference. With a game actually playing? Nah, you won't notice a difference between 1440p and 4k. 1080p to 1440p though there IS a difference, which is actually quite significant. Side note: with a 1440p monitor, you don't need to have 8x anti aliasing turned on since the pixel density is so confined you don't really need that extra rendering done, which saves a lot on performance of your GPU. Sometimes it's nice to have it turned up to 2x anti aliasing, but I never need it higher than that, as I don't see a difference, and it uses much more GPU power.
@joshuayonathan5373
@joshuayonathan5373 7 жыл бұрын
thiskory99 Good choice. I somewhat regret getting a 4k monitor over a 1440p 144Hz one, it it is still beautiful. I quite notice the difference between 4k and 1440p... so much more than the difference between 1080p and 1440p in fact. Once I started playing the witcher in 4k it was REALLY hard to tune it down to 1440p for the extra frames. it just looked so damn natural. For rise of the tomb raider I was able to play at 4k with an avgerage fps of 45 on ultra - which I was satosfoed with. I absolutely loved the experience. I am debating whether or not to spend my christmas money on a second 1070 so I can play 4k on ultra for all games at 60 fps

It's nice for once that the hype train/paper launch for the 1060 didn't leave us feeling too disappointed with the physical launch. Although I seem to recall Nvidia claiming the 1060 was faster than a 980. Not according to most benchmarks! All things considered, I'm going to hang on for the reviews of the custom RX 480's before parting with any cash.

Since nvidia didn't allow gamersnexus to add this important thing to the video, DX 12 and vulkan benchmark, reference gtx vs reference rx, here it goes: Ashes dx12: 47 vs 45.5 fps, Talos : dx11 scores better then vulkan on both cards, aka lol ignore, Doom Vulkan: 98 vs 111 fps. So keep that in mind before you blow money on a dx11 card, and consider the crossfire support, lower price, better price/perf in dx11 let alone new APIs, freesync monitors and the winner is clear as day.

OK, first of all: No one dictates our content. I control everything that gets published. Period. Please do not spread lies that are in clear attempt to harm our credibility that we've worked hard for for nearly 8 years. Secondly, it's in the video. Like, literally right there. And the article. You can see the the Doom benchmarks in the article, Talos in the article -- both page 4. Ashes is in this video. Doom and Talos were still being processed as we shot the video (because videos take a very long time to make), and so were included in the write-up. As for multi-GPU setups, we do not recommend them presently for either vendor. Our SLI 1070 and CF 480 benchmarks explain why, so I won't bother repeating that information. ^SB

Gamers Nexus ha! Don't kid yourself. Just because fanbois upvote your comment, it is mostly because of your magnificent hair. Leaving out crucial information like pointing out RX actually outperforms the more expensive card in Doom when running on Vulkan is a big deal imo. Most people watching this are clueless and would buy a more expensive card and screw themselves over. I know you ain't dumb, and I know you know what you're talking about, so only naturally I presumed you are afraid of Nvidia. They have been known to pressure reviewers before. (Fermi era for example)

Just release those freaking custom RX 480s so we can finally have some comparison, what are they waiting for? But looking at prices where those cards are available for preorder, like on Overclockers UK, top tier 480s like Sapphire Nitro will be around 210£ for 4GB and £250 for 8GB, while mid tier 6GB 1060s are starting from £250 and top tier ones are £280+, so considering performance difference on average in many games of different types, those cards are perfectly comparable. Nvidia stops to exist if you consider getting monitor with adaptive sync since FreeSync monitors are much cheaper than G-sync ones and there are a lot more of them on different price points and quality levels, but not many people seem to care about that. So probably no big changes in market share are coming, especially if Nvidia has quick answer for 460 and 470 and their answer will also be comparable to AMD cards. No rebellion here dear AMD.

IT almost seems to me that the best choice here in many cases will be the 4GB 480. It's $100 cheaper (for now) and at this range of cards turning down settings to get frame rates >60 or 90 or 120 means you don't need the VRAM as much. Maybe I'm weird because I'll often take low settings for 144Hz over ultra and 60Hz but this whole market segment is strange right now.

Hi. Kudos on the fast release of such a vast amount of detailed data. Are all GPU memory MHz inconsequentially comparable if say two cards {different manufactures} list the same number like 8000MHz ? And what sort of real-world differential can one expect between say 8000MHz to 8500MHz? Thanks.

Look at the test systems these KZbin reviewers use. 600 dollar cpus, x99, ridiculous ram, ssds. It's not real world. If you are looking at buying one of these "budget cards" test them on a "budget system". Something realistic for the target audience. The plus or minus 10 fps gap between the 480 and 1060 would probably be reduced with a lower spec system. This is speculation because I'm poor but it makes sense to me. I've seen videos where ram alone can give a boost of 15-20fps in certain situations. Idk just a thought
@GamersNexus
@GamersNexus 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you're explicitly saying "KZbin reviewers," as all good reviewers -- incl. Anandtech, Tom's, our own website, and others -- will take these measures. Read the test methodology. It's very basic testing procedure to eliminate all bottlenecks imposed by devices not under test. You are not actually testing product performance in a fair environment if imposing external limitations.

+Gamers Nexus I'm not implying that the reviews are bad, in truth I believe the way gamers nexus test products is the most methodical and the best way to make an informed decision. All I'm saying is I believe the results found in most of the "popular" reviewers channels are skewed. 90 percent of the target audience will make an informed decision off of results found with a 1000 usd cpu/motherboard etc. and expect similar results. Keep up the excellent work.

You're an idiot A yeast bed like this is designed to showcase the difference in gpu. It isnt meant to be a real world application senario cause everyone has different parts. I would like to know how this would perform in my rig with a 6600 and 8gb of ram at 2666 but someone else might be one older hardware so really how will we show the difference in gpu? It's the same reason CPU test is done with the best gpu.

+Gamers Nexus You are absolutely correct here which also means it makes absolutely no sense for any Tech Channel to be testing an RX 480 with a Motherboard having PCI technology from 2002 - 2004. I'm not saying you did, but other similarly reputable Channels did and or repeated this. And I'm not talking about "testing" compatibility with obsolete hardware, I'm talking advertised as "performance" testing. Likely this is a reason why you are going to be getting guys like these popping up out of the woodwork to comment about your test methods.

i would pick a 480 over a 1060 becuse of the dx12 and vulkan in the future and we now amd is bad with drivers compared to nvidia at day 1 buy give the 480 a couple of months and i think it will beat it in the most dx11 games and especially in newer apis:)just look how the 780ti vs 290x or 970 vs 390 compete today:P it will be like that all over again in a couple of months :)and these cards is budget cards that most people have over long time imo so u dont upgrade every year with cards like these so it smarter to get the 480 imo.

Their DX11 performance isn't suddenly going to get better. A couple of months from now the 480 will still lose to the 1060 in DX11 games. AMD has terrible DX11 drivers, especially if you have a weak CPU as you will suffer from overhead issues in CPU intensive games.

I give you an example for fps/dollar: the cheapest Rx480 I can find here (germany) is 249€ (4GB) / 269€ (8GB). These cards have literally no OC headroom. The cheapest 1060 I could find is the Zotac Mini at around 278€. Thats a merely 10€ more for much better OC ability, a custom cooler and better overall performance with probably less powerdraw. The only drawback here is the lack of SLI (which I am pretty sure is because of it would run out a 1080 in SLI, but hey, just my tinfoilhat). It is time for AMD to roll out their AIBs, otherwise there is no reason for anyone in Europe to shave of 10€ for a worse performing card.

The 1060 in Germany is for the cheapest aftermarket one about 10€ more expensive than a reference 480. So logically you would go with a 1060. BUT if you factor in a G-Sync monitor at about 150€ more than a Freesync one it looks a bit differently. Because especially in 1080p is Freesync 480 > 1060 without G-Sync for me. So I think I'm going with the 480 but we'll have to see how the AIB 480 cards are performing and priced.

@GamersNexus, can you help to explain the difference between the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming and the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X? I've looked on the MSI website, and it seems like it's mainly just some clocking speed for the Boost/Base Clock Speeds, and the Memory Clock Speed, with the Gaming X having slightly higher numbers than the Gaming. Will this really present a large noticeable difference between the two cards? I've been looking around to find reviews or videos of the Gaming vs the Gaming X but it seems like all that is out there right now are reviews and videos on the Gaming X only.
