I absolutely don't recommend seeing the seasons and films in that order. Just watch them according to their release dates, that's all... Progressive is meant to make people relive and "re-hype" season 1, it's great to watch Progressive which details the story after you've seen and loved season 1. Plus the change in quality will sting Progressive's eyes to season 1, it'll put people off.

As much as I loved this movie. I wanted to stay as close to the LN as possible. So whenever I rewatch it I skip to the part with the labyrinth and watch from there. The first half isn’t bad, but this is just my preference.

I absolutely do not recommend reading LN in the chronological order. It is written in too much of a fragmented format that it makes no sense to try reading the stories chronologically. The story constantly reference things back and forth, so following the regular series order is the way to go.

if im only reading for aincrads portion then would it make sense to read progressive into the aincrad novels if so then how much of the aincrad novels is not shown by the anime since idk whats covered and not

From the main series, Volume 8 Early and Late. The Day of Beginnings / The First Day was completely skipped. The other Aincrad story that takes place later in Aincrad omits a couple important events to fit it into a 2-episode timespan. Third story is from much later in the series. Just keeping things vague because you said you did not beyond Episode 3 yet. There's also another SAO side story in Volume 22 that also takes place later in Aincrad. There are also plenty of SAO stories that have not yet been published in a volume. Sword Art Online Hopeful Chant (acts as a prequel to Ordinal Scale movie), Sword Art Online the Next Day (sequel to First Day), Sword Art Online the 7th Day (sequel to Next Day) etc, among plenty of other lower profile ones too.

im a year late but after watching the progressive movies i plan to read the novels of progressive, do you recommend reading them then starting at episode 3 and finishing it as I've finished all of sao anime but want to re watch the aincrad arc after the progressive events

No worries about being late, Im still here :P Generally speaking, whether to first read or watch is one of those questions I don't like answering really since it depends on your personal preference. Both can be argued. Read after to learn everything you have been wondering about, or read beforehand to know every detail that's coming up. It's completely up to you as to which prospect you like more really. Especially in the case of Progressives before Episode 3, reading Progressives for the original series that was written before Progressive was even a thing, there is really no particular benefit. The most that'll happen is a single reference in War of Underworld, but if you watched Scherzo already, you'll know the reference anyways.

@@Gamerturk so I see what you mean, but I saw that the anime basically covers all the events that happened after floor 25 basically after kirito and asunas split, but is there anything I would miss out on if I were to watch the anime vs reading the sao aincrad novels or progressive then read the aincrad novels or is it just minor differences in terms of the side stories and stuff and I wont miss out on too much

@@leonr12345 Reading the SAO Aincrad novels, you'll just get a more detailed telling of the events and some minor additional content that was trimmed away from the anime. In the case of Aincrad, I recommend just watching the Anime, and then grabbing SAO (Main Series) Volume 8. That volume features two side stories. One was completely omitted from the Anime that takes place right after Kirito abandons Klein in Episode 1, and another side story that had major aspects of it trimmed away to fit into 2 episodes during Aincrad. You would not gain too much from reading SAOv1&2, which are otherwise decent adaptations. In terms of Progressive, just read them whenever. It is a companion series after all. It is not going to enhance your enjoyment of the rest of Aincrad as its almost completely disconnected to it. Enjoy it as its own thing. So far, Progressive covers up until the end of Floor 7, so there is a very long time until we reach the F25 breakup, if we ever will at all.

Mobile games are all standalone titles, either fully original stories, or non-canon versions with additions. AWvsSAO can be played after Lost Song, but it is non-canon to the SAO Game series.

I can't consider myself the one who can tell the truth, as I'm not sure myself, but I would still like to know from people who clearly understand this amazing franchise better. Of course, the topic about the character in Unital Ring has already been discussed, which is very similar to Eugeo, but still. I heard a very long time ago, one can say the theory that this character is the son of Kirito and Asuna, whom they gave to be raised by the family (descendants) of Fanatio. This clearly still looks like a lie, but if you still look at it from the other side, Kawahara just out of the blue would not have made a character that is VERY similar to Eugeo. So I would still like to know the opinion of experts, thanks to which, I can understand the situation and in the future do not spread false information in the future. Thank you very much.

Completely depends how they will approach the transition from Unital Ring into Inter Intelligence War. But I doubt they will go for anything higher than a 4-cour season after the disaster that was the entire Alicization saga. Unless there is a very light shift between the (sub)arcs, I can see them separating IIW into a Season 5, rather than bundling it up with UR. UR is already way too long as is at the moment.

I don't think watching the stuff will persuade SAO's detractors. As much as I love the franchise, the Anime has had a long history of poorly communicating the writing of SAO. Frankly, I can't fault people for believing Kirito is a Gary Stu because the anime offers so little information to support his achievements. On top of that, poor visual translations of book moments, the big ones that come to mind are the ends of both of Kirito's duels with Heathcliff. The shot of Heathcliff using overassist mode is bad enough, the part where Kirito sees his own death in his mind's eye and then resolves to make one final act is still baffling even when I know what's *supposed* to be happening. If people are every going to change their minds about SAO's writing, it's going to be via reading the LNs, and it will stay that way until the anime (particularly the entire first season) gets a remake in some fashion.

@@SoftisNelaris I disagree with the people who thought he was a Gary sue. The anime did a fine job of portraying Kirito like he was in the novels. Well, I guess here’s a better way to explain myself. If they were to read the novels, they most likely think the same way about his character since he’s exactly the same as he is in the anime. Maybe it’s because I watched it too many times but I still don’t understand why people called him a Gary Sue, when it was really clear that he’s not as strong as people make him out to be in his even lost his fair share of battles. The dude is definitely not perfect and that’s what makes him a good character in my eyes. as for the last bit, you said I can kind of somewhat agree. But I think that if people were to rewatch that scene more times, it would make more sense. It’s truly an awkward editing choice which honestly I don’t really mind it. But it probably be best if they were to cut that little moment out and just had to play as it was in the book. Nonetheless, those are just my thoughts.

​@@Slippypippy270 I didn't think he was outright a Gary Stu either when I watched it, but after I thought about it more, I think it's a reasonable conclusion if you were to just watch the Anime. It's not just the portrayal of it, but also the way the Anime executes Kirito's reversal on Kayaba in their final battle. In the Anime, there's no context given for what happened, whereas in the LN there's 3 instances of something similar happening, which actually sets it up beforehand. As a result, Anime-only watchers just see Kirito becoming a god without context. Even I was like "What in the actual fuck is this?" when I first watched it, and I actually loved the whole series up to and beyond that. Another example would be Kirito's dodging/deflecting bullets in Phantom Bullet. The LN adds in a number of details that are small in scope but very important for understanding how he does it. I'm quite proud of myself for picking up on most of these kinds of details when I first watched the series, but damn, after seeing it pointed out by other people I can absolutely see how they'd be confused. it's not that there is *zero* support, it's just that it's hard enough to pick up on that I understand why many people miss it. The visual style doesn't help with it either
