Assassin's Creed 3. This game's beginning chapter with Haytham was a chore to get through. But once you take control of Connor and the assassin vs. templar conflict kicks off, this game got good. Seriously Connor and Haythams banter on freedom and control was amazing
@adamdavis173720 күн бұрын
I'm with you on the game itself but I disagree on the initial opening. I think Haythem is an awesome character and I liked everything he was doing. However that one mission where you're sneaking aboard the ship I found to be just terribly designed. Although in general a lot of the main missions in this one don't feel that great It was playing as young Connor that made me want to pull my hair out. The game just basically has two tutorial sections and the second one drags on for what feels like 5 hours. But, like you said once everything opens up and you start really getting into the main story and start getting the option to do all the side content. It is one of my favorite open world games I've ever played. There is actually such a complex economy that you can mess around in that got me sucked in for hours. That and I love to just run around in the treetops over the snow and snare British soldiers with the rope dart like predator 😂 I also feel like it has some of the best foot chases in the franchise. Even if when you're in New York it's a little ridiculous with how many soldiers there are But I liked the naval missions there, almost more than I like how it's presented in Black flag, but I think it had to be somewhat simplified for that one since you're always in the ship But my favorite thing, the combat in AC3 feels more brutal than any other game in the franchise. That tomahawk is awesome and Connor is a whirlwind of death
@adnanasif953820 күн бұрын
@adamdavis1737 Yeah the young Connor's story section was hit with a speed breaker. But as soon as Achilles shows up in the story, things start to improve. Underneath all these rough edges is an amazing game, with one of the best portrayal of assassins vs. templar conflicts in this series. And absolutely the combat system was great. But got boring and stale after being used continuously till AC rogue with miniscule iterations. The new AC games play like amateur dark souls formula.

My Resident Evil game I was Wrong about wasn’t 4, but rather 7. I was like “First person? Get outta TOWN.” But then I. Y’know. Played it. And it was the most Resident Evil game I played since Nemesis. I fell in love with that world, the enemies, Ethan Winters, the schmuck. It’s proof that a change in perspective can really be a shot in the arm sometimes. …damn, this is how Metroid fans felt with Prime I bet.
@616Entertainment22 күн бұрын
I could definitely use VII as well. You probably know this, I probably told you at some point, I avoided RE VII for years. The first person thing was just and "eeeeehhhhhh I don't know." Even when I eventually started it, I dropped it and took a while to come back. Then I wound up loving it.
@robchuk413622 күн бұрын
Same. Whereas RE 4 made me nervous, I was open to a shakeup since the franchise had gotten stale and (more importantly) that over-the-shoulder perspective was something totally original. But I thought RE7 was being derivative of other first-person horror, and I was super against everything I first saw. Boy was I wrong about that!

The abrupt start of the story didn’t start me on a good foot with it and then the more they dove into the past I found the story even less likable. Particularly how the main character and his wife got together. I didn’t buy for a second that woman cared about this guy. Gameplay was fun though. Ultimately I played it every day for more than a week, I got to the military part and realized I didn’t care what happened and quit playing. I wouldn’t mind a new game in that world with more complete writing.

I agree with your assessment of Resident Evil 4. That and I never owned a PS3. I waited until the remake on the ps5 to play it and it’s easily one of my favorite RE games of all time. Soul like games I’m not a fan of but I’ve played and enjoyed games similar like the Fallen Jedi series. Love both games and Stellar Blade. One of my top games of the year. Grand theft auto games looked fun but I never got into the actual story of the games, but GTA5 is a masterpiece in my books and it hooked me onto Red Dead Redemption 2 which is another masterpiece. Those Dead Raising games aren’t fun imo. Great video as usual, Ian!

I dislike RE4. The game is well made, sure, but the fact that they threw the entire story they were building to in the trash is STILL bullshit. Plus, the new 100% action focus was for sure a cash grab. I can see why people love it, but meh.
@adamdavis173720 күн бұрын
I mostly agree. I can't say that I don't like it at all though. But many years had to pass first and I had to just eventually replay it knowing what I was in for. But it's never going to be in one of my favorites and I was pretty pissed off for the same reason. I already thought code Veronica was starting to push a lot more action concepts into the game even if just by presentation. But I still wanted to know how that story ended and Resident Evil 4 basically just says "Yeah never mind umbrella just went out of business, Chris never got to make word on going to take them down himself" And then the game might kind of have a horror backdrop to it but I personally never found any of it to be scary. It just feels like a shooter As such I wasn't that excited about the remake either, but I actually really enjoyed that one. I think it's a lot better than the original and actually manages to put in a few sections that are pretty creepy. But the original is always going to be a little bit of a sore spot for me because indeed that was when franchise I had come to love more than any other in gaming, lost its identity to me
@jeggitv20 күн бұрын
@@adamdavis1737 To be fair, I didn't say I hated the game, but it's not anywhere near to being one of my faves. The remake didn't do it for me either. I got the platinum trophy, but simply because I made it a goal to get all the main series platinums and the other release of 4 doesn't have one. lol When I heard that RE8 was gonna be a love letter to RE4, I cringed. Luckily, that game is far better than 4, but it's still not scary outside of a part in the game which presented probably the best horror in any of the games, bar none. To me, RE4 feels like a slap in the face to the fans of the series up until that point. "Okay, thanks for getting us where we wanted to be in terms of having eyes on us, but we're moving in another direction with or without you." Like, sure, the shooting mechanics are good in RE4. But there's more to my enjoyment of a game, especially if it's a part of a series that I love, than the gameplay being good. Unfortunately the face of my gaming history will always bear the hand print from Capcom deploying the pimp hand of greed upon it. lol

Boy, was I wrong after playing through it. The other game that I got a terrible first impression on was Resident Evil Remake. It was the first Resident Evil game that I played that wasn't RE 4,5 or 6, so I had to get used to the different camera perspective, not to mention I was playing the Wii version, so I ended up judging it too harshly. I didn't pick it up again until the PS4/Xbox One remaster came out and am glad to say it stands as one of my favorite games of all time.

I'm a huge fan of the OG Doom Games. Doom, Doom II, and Doom 64 are the holy trinity for me. When they announced the free Doom + Doom II upgrade and the Legacy of Rust add on, I was hyped. I played the first couple of maps and wasn't really feeling it, so I just kinda moved onto other stuff. They didn't hook me like the maps in other Doom games had where I couldn't put down my controller. About 4 or 5 months later, I decided to try it again and got into the third map of Legacy of Rust. By then I was hooked like I had been with all the other Doom games and countless mods.

A bit different, but Soulslikes are those games I haven't tried that I keep telling myself I'll somehow enjoy for all the cool shit in them, but I absolutely know I won't lol. Trial and error gameplay is hard to nail and I'm even more picky about it than most. I never found artificial difficulty too appealing myself, which I get the impression they have. I'm also big on games respecting the player's time. So it's frustrating cause I look at them and think of how awesome it all looks. The atmosphere, aesthetics, all the design. But I feel it might be ruined once the controller is in hand. I felt similarly to Forbidden Siren, which I did play even though I knew its shortcomings going in.

Fun topic! So one for me is *Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.* After Avengers failed, who could trust the next, similarly- looking Marvel game? But not being a looter shooter goes a long way. To my pleasant surprise, it's one of the most fun (and funniest) single player action sci-fis I've played probably since the Mass Effect games. On the flip side, I'd have to say *Max Payne 3.* Was so sure I'd love it based on first impressions, and Rockstar's pedigree, but I just... Didn't. Not even close. It really loses a lot moving away from it's original noir identity, and it feels like a con to insist it's still there.

I still don't really care for Resident Evil 4 that much. In fact I think the remake is way better than the original. I don't think it's bad, I recognize it's place in gaming history But as a massive fan of the classic games at the time Resident Evil 4 really disappointed me with a massive shift away from horror and overall having next to nothing to do with the plot line they had been building for the last four games. It's grown on me over the years because I had to just accept that's where the franchise went. But it's never going to be one of my favorites My most recent example for myself here though is I just finished Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Between the main quest, whatever side quests I did, and the first DLC, I have 110 hours in this game now But it's almost 20:25 and I'm just beating it after buying it on release. When I first started playing the map seemed just too big and overwhelming with too much crap in it and I couldn't figure out what I should be prioritizing or not. There were just so many other systems going on in the game that only added to that feeling. And then it just felt too much like origins without much change, and I had just spent like 70 hours to prior year in origins which I loved I kept trying to get back into it only to still be discouraged, especially since it feels so heavily level-gated in the beginning so you feel like you can't even just go explore the map But last year I came back to it, I suppose out of frustration that a game I paid full price for was sitting there unfinished. And began to just grind out a couple of the early areas until I was about level 20 or so, and all of a sudden everything clicked and the game opened up and I became addicted But it's one of those things where despite how much I loved the rest of that journey to the point where this is one of the most enjoyable open world games I've ever played. To have to say that the first 15 hours of it are kind of boring, is not an indication of good game design. Other games are over in 15 hours, you don't want to have to play through that to get to the good part. But in this instance for me it was well worth it This one everybody will hate me for. I was super hyped for God of War 2018. By the time I finish getting through the first realm you visit, I was feeling the dread of disappointment. I eventually finished it, but I felt like I had to force myself to do it. Ended up switching the game to easy mode halfway through it, not because it felt too hard but because I just wanted to rush through it just for the stories sake. It just felt so much like every other Sony cinematic third person action adventure game and rarely felt like God of War. There is just so much slow paced climbing and rowing and walking and talking And so few of those epics at peace moments that made that franchise for me prior. The majority of boss fights are just fighting that same big troll but with slightly different elemental attacks. I still say Red Dead Redemption 2 was robbed at the game awards of that year

Call me crazy,but I didn't get or hear about anything regarding Rockstar's Prestige in the industry compared to alot of other Big Studios over the years. I knew about how popular the original GTA trilogy was but call me crazy,I never was able to play those games due to the lack of a checkpoint system and lack of understanding what to do and in GTA4 i absolutely despised the physics/the driving/the color palette/and the boring pace and never was able to finish it or its spinoffs or any Rockstar game they had released even up to RDR1 because I just didn't like cowboy games. I was even among the people who thought GOW3 shouldve won game of the year. Then I ended up playing Max Payne 3 and having alot of fun with it,but GTA 5 really was the game that blew up Rockstar to the mainstream audience and I personally think it was due two a factor of streamlining its controls system when it comes to its combat and driving but most importantly it added a much needed Checkpoint System that hadn't been in the series until then. Then it opened me up to trying other games of theirs and while I'll always he apart of the crowd begging for a Bully 2,RDR2 really is one of the greatest story games I've ever seen. It took me like 2 solid years to beat that game for the first time but it was worth it by the time I saw Arthur give john his hat and say his farewells. Legitimately no other studio in the world puts as much effort into their single player experience ls as Rockstar(at least before they got consumed by GTA online) and im so excited for GTA 6
