Great series! I was a WCW wrestling fan for both TV and video games while in high school and college in the late '90s. I had a Playstation first with the WCW titles you covered, but couldn't resist those N64 games and got a used one later on. While I think that the two best WCW games on Playstation are WCW vs the World (for gameplay) and WCW Mayhem (for commentary), a WCW PSX game that rivaled WCW /nWo Revenge could have been made that combined "vs. the World's" grappling system, Nitro and thunders character rants, Mayhem's commentary and arenas, and Backstage Assault's large roster and create -a-wrestler.

I think the only thing i can compliment Nitro & Thunder on is the graphics and character models. That's it. I know it's the late 90's and it's primitive compared to today in terms of quality assurance and focus testing but it boggles my mind how not only does a developer with no credentials get the rights to one of the hottest licences in the world at that point and how they can also design something fundamentally fucking unplayable? So shambolic. The dev's clearly couldn't have been Wrestling fans in the slightest and certainly didn't do their research and play the predecessor for reference on a good quality control scheme.

I used to have those games back then during my childhood. WCW Nitro was the very first wrestling videogame that I had in the late '90s, and it sucks. I had WCW/nWo Thunder, and it was the very last WCW game that I owned in 1999 before I collected the WWF/E games in the early 2000s up to 2017. I think Inland Productions should rethink these suggestions to release these two WCW games on the PlayStation.

Before I get lost in the jumble of paragraph, another awesome series and look forward to the WWE series if you cover it. With that being said: On the last video, I mentioned how this part would be a bitter sweet reminder because of how everything came together for me. I’ve been a lifelong wrestling fan, my mom got me into it because she grew up watching in Mexico. I always understood it was just Lucha libre and it was Mexico’s thing at entertainment. I was born and raised in Texas so not once ever did I ever fathom that wrestling was a global thing. One afternoon I went to my friends house and they popped in WCW Nitro. To my surprise I was flabbergasted as to WHY Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio were on there when they were Mexico guys. Like what was this WCW and why it almost the same like Lucha libre but not quite, almost like there’s a story to it. That afternoon was the catalyst to change me as a fan forever. WCW Nitro introduced me to American wrestling in July 1998, the shit hit peak of wrestling. But the funny thing was that later that afternoon, he popped in WWF Warzone and the rest was history. I instantly became a WWE fan and have been since and never looked back. Even though WCW was what brought light to American wrestling, it was WWF/E that solidified my love for it. Thank you again for the series, it brought back childhood memories and the friends I had back then. I look forward to the next one.

I can remember playing WCW VS The World and then WCW/nWo World Tour and thinking Nitro was going to be incredible because I saw a few high-res screenshots in EGM and Gamepro (which looked stellar for their day and looked MUCH closer to the real wrestlers than the polygonal models ever did) a few months before it came out. I figured that the gameplay was going to be on par with what came before so I was beyond stoked. I had also read that there would be entrances with the authentic theme music and so on too (which hadn't ever been done in a wrestling game up to that point). This was long before the days of gameplay preview vids and whatnot, and WCW itself was insanely popular in pop culture at the time so I figured Nitro was going to be like the Super Mario 64 of wrestling games - completely groundbreaking. The wait for it to come out was AGONIZING. Then it came out... A few moves into my first match and I realized I'd been had. To say I was deflated would have been the understatement of a lifetime. What a miserable stink pickle of a game. That said, though, WCW/nWo Revenge came out later that year and COMPLETELY made up for it. Must've clocked at least a hundred hours having battle royals with friends not to mention all the time I spent playing alone.

Shit I'm a week late?! Thanks KZbin -_- Great video as always dude. I do not remember Nitro being so bad. How niave my 7 year old mind was. Never played Thunder as I got Smackdown before I knew Thunder even existed and I can see I was much better off for it. Can't wait for the next part.

The best feature of Thunder was being able to realign the factions. I got such a kick out of that when I was a kid. Shame the gameplay wasn't up to scratch, so you couldn't really have a lot of fun with it.

Okay. It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. I laughed more here than probably any other WCW video. I still like them for what they were in 1998.

I was a WCW kid before WWF so this is all I played and all I had before I got WWF Attitude. I think I even had strategy guides. I think the Nitro one came with a poster and the Thunder one came with some cheap trading cards.

I know for a fact that in WWF No Mercy, you can get out of the ring while a battle royal. You can do so by selecting the option previous the match on match options.

It should be noted that around the time of WCW/nWo Revenge, THQ and Yukes were working on a game for PS1 called WCW/nWo LIVE which would be using NJPW Toukon Retsuden 3's gameplay engine to its fullest capability. Unfortunately, Yukes couldn't find an easy way to get the models for guys like Hollywood Hulk Hogan or Sting in the game without the code for each wrestler having to be reworked. This was not Power Move Pro Wrestling from 1995 on the PS1 which used NJPW Toukon Retsuden 1's gameplay engine, this engine was a completely new beast compared to NJPW Toukon Retsuden 1 & 2 which would have been easier to use the code for WCW/nWo LIVE. So when WWF signed THQ and Yukes, WCW/nWo LIVE was 75% completed as they finally cracked the code the month before converting it to this amazing game which only has footage and no demo preserved. WCW/nWo LIVE was scrapped because THQ and Yukes were now with the WWF. However, it just so happened that by pure coincidence the WWF wanted a PS1 game that used the NJPW Toukon Retsuden 3 gameplay engine from 2 years prior, and the developers made two games with this engine. If you know where I'm going with this, WCW/nWo LIVE got sacrificed so WWF SmackDown! and WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role can exist. In an alternate timeline, Acclaim would have still been making WWE games up until 2013 and WCW/nWo LIVE would have been released on the PS1 around the same time as WCW/nWo Revenge on N64.

I vividly remember Bobby Heenan yelling POWERBOMB! in these games. Nitro and Thunder we're both trash compared to Attitude and War Zone. The rants in Thunder & Nitro are still legendary. This was a great trip back into a time I was super jealous of N64 gamers

@10:08 - I think this ring was called 'Turbo' because, having taken away everything except the ring itself (no audience, no special lighting, no stadium extras, etc...), the game would theoretically play faster. If the PS1 didn't have to render all the stuff that goes into making a wrestling game feel like a wrestling game, then...yeah, more memory for when the Snowman drops that elbow on Annie May. I guess? I don't know. I'm trying to make logical sense of a game published twenty-one years ago. Someone stop me...

I actually owned the PC version of Nitro (as well as the PS1 and N64 versions and Thunder). The best part of that was 1) it was actually a port of Thunder but with Nitro’s menu graphics and song plastered on and 2) the modding community was surprisingly good, probably because it was one of the few wrestling games for PC at the time. Oh, and the rants, of course.

Ahh Nitro and Thunder. 2 games I was so excited for. Nitro I bought with a combo pack which included the strategy guide. I loved this game at the time and I thoroughly enjoyed the whacky characters like Santa and the Snowman. Thunder was fun for the weapons which you didn't mention. It was awesome to bring on the pain hitting your opponents with whatever weapons you could find. These games also allowed you to unlock several WCW stars like Rey Mysterio, Ultimo Dragon, Ravens flock etc. finally with the inclusion of Reese aka the yetti you could book the yetti vs hogan. These games to me were more fun than Vs the world which was blocky and annoying with all the time a the computer would put me in the Mexican surfboard. This game was fun and oh yeah the dance level was hilarious. Of course the next game would bring the best of WCW on PS1 before the worst WCW game of all time but I'll save that for the next video.

The WCW turbo arena made it so that the game played faster than normal due to the empty stadium. Not needing to render any crowd or arena graphics allowed the game to run at a faster framerate. I could be way off but that's what I remember anyways.

I remember playing Thunder on a Playstation demo disc. It was Hogan and Goldberg in a steel cage and I had no idea how to play it, the controls were awful, and the match was over, as you said, in around 30 seconds lol all I remember is the animated garbage being thrown into the ring a la Bash at the Beach 1996

I missed out on the great wrestling games on the N64 since I had a PS1 as well. I was so hyped back then for this. I remember as a teenager saving up my money to get WCW Nitro. I knew after playing for 10 minutes what an abomination it was. I think I ended up selling it to some poor soul at school. I never bothered with Thunder(or any of the WCW PS1 games) but it looks like I didn't miss much.
