TO EVERYONE: If you watch the episode, we mention that many of the games we mention have had sequels in the past. There is no need to let us know that such-and-such had a sequel, as if to invalidate it's inclusion in the episode. We know. We want better and proper sequels. Thanks for understanding.

It's funny that you mention that. No clue when a 3rd RPG episode might be, but I started playing Suikoden on the PS last night. I hadn't played it since I rented it for one night when it was brand new. I remembered a lot! There was that really nice guitar tune as we were all eating dinner near the beginning. I then remembered that there should be strings backing this guitar tune and that it wasn't on the OST release at all. Yup, the strings then came on!

FYI- You actually do NOT need the save game backup cart in order to play Shining Force CD Books 3&4. If you look in your save data in the system menu, you'll see two files, one that's 99 blocks, and one that's just 1 block. You need to delete the 99 block file, as that's your actual save file. The 1 block file keeps track of what you have completed. Also, if you just delete your game from within the game itself, it will make sure the right file is deleted. I have played all 4 books without having the save cart.

Working Designs didn't make games btw, they just translated them. At the time, they provided a decent English translation (albeit with flaws) with correct grammar and spelling in the days of conglaturation and all your base are belong to us (although I will say most of the voice actors they used were excellent). So that's why they seemed amazing at the time. By today's standards their translations are below average.

The boss is multi-jointed yes, but the rotating part is mode 7. The joints were all animated sprites. Mode 7 isn't a chip. And like I demonstrated the backgrounds are really a simple task that can be performed on any system of the time. They only expand in the vertical dimension. Super easy to do. Look at the Sonic example I showed.

Anytime I've seen or conducted testing on the strength of other people's balls, or found myself in a situation where someone was testing the toughness of my "balls" as, it became readily apparent to me and the other researches that none of balls tested were very tough at all. However, I frequently hear Joe Redifer referring to games as being "tough as balls" and I wonder if it's possible his balls are abnormally tough like made of stone and he doesn't realize that it's a bad frame of reference to use in a conversation since his ball toughness is wildly disproportionate to that of the great pubic public at large.

Axelay’s “vertical” stages aren’t actually moving you to the center of the screen. You are always moving up but they actually scroll left and right too. That’s the horizontal scroll catching up. Because it’s scrolling the other things too, it doesn’t actually affect your precision. What does affect your precision is the rolling 3D effect where you may think you were in the right position to avoid something or thread the needle until you get closer, the object grows, and you realize that your position was not correct.

I'd love to see a new Goonies game. Goonies 2 was one of my favorites on the NES and with all the hidden stuff and figuring out the different pathways and how all the doors connected, it took me weeks to finish on my first playthrough. I think a new game on the Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade would be amazing in the right hands.

Who said the level 2 boss head was sprites? I certainly did not. It does not need to have black behind it. Instead it has a solid greenish brown. The "detail" you see in the background are all sprites. You can tell because when you fire your missiles, the detail flickers away occasionally. The overhead levels are simply scanline v-scroll adjustments (or raster-based stretching). It's the same exact effect shown on Sonic. I get my information from actual programmers, not old EGM mags.

I really wish you'd put the list of games in your episodes in the description of the video. Anyways, what games really need sequels are the Mystical Ninja/Goemon series (although there seem to have been a few more recent sequels, I haven't seen any in America), Snow Board Kids (from N64. I know they had 1 sequel on the DS, but I'd hardly call that a sequel because it was a piece of shit), and Bomberman 64/Bomberman the second attack (I know they have bomberman sequels that play more like the traditional bomberman games, but the style in Bomberman 64 and Bomberman the Second Attack was just so fun).

+Corey Cavalier Yeah, I would love a proper sequel to Dino Crisis. What they did with 3 was one of the single most disappointing moments I think I've ever had with a game. As for Parasite Eve, despite being a sort of prototype for the ATS battle system, the first is still the best, in my opinion. What they did with 2 was just NOT good, and I refuse to talk about the 3rd game that wasn't a sequel but was a sequel but wasn't. Maybe some indie group will give us spiritual successors one day, but I don't think Capcom or Square has their shit together enough to honestly give us what we want anymore, especially Square.

At 15:10, that's the Chicken Stinger/Chicken Leg, which also appears in Altered Beast as an enemy. The games were both made by Matoko Uchida and he just reused and recolored the sprite. Oddly, Super Castelvania IV has an enemy on the final stage called the Headless Hunter, which is just the Headless Horror/Bone Head from Altered Beast with a sabre -- purple tunic and all. Also, in one of your earlier videos featuring footage from the Japanese release of Super Castlevania IV, the human form of Neff/Majin from Altered Beast can be seen hanging out below the light-up hallway leading to Dracula's room. Are the Castlevania cameos just fun tributes, or are the creators of these games attempting to link all three series to a single universe?

Even though it didn't have the best reviews, I've always wanted a *proper* sequel of Fighting Force for the PS1.

Jumping flash....It...It doesn't fall into the same problem most first-person platforming does. Most of the time, your feet are invisible, so you have little to no clue how you need to land on a platform....but Jumping flash fixes that!! Finally, someone who figured it out!! I can't wait to get into that amazing series, I'll bet it was so popular, and there was so many seq-- ...Wait, what's that you say? Only two games? ..... .....Damn.

It's funny, out of all the weekend rentals I had as a kid (countless?), Shinning force is one of the few that sticks out. I remember being really bummed that my saves were going to be replaced by someone else. I also remember renting splatter house 3, mainly because my younger brother was caught trying to steal trading cards that night. =D

The single player AI on Return Fire was broken, with unplayable maps. And every two player game ends in a draw if the losing person destroys the bridges. I agree that it has the basis of a good game, but would need a lot of work for a sequel.

In the case of Axelay, aside for the fact that one can just look at the coding, it was programmed by Hideo Ueda & Kazuhiko Ishida who also worked on Castlevania 4 and went on to form Treasure. Since Mode 7 can only rotate and scale backgrounds and not sprites, the result is a black backgrounds as seen with the Rock Boss in Castlevania IV. The Sonic Levels you referred to used Parallax Line Scroll Function. All this has been well documented. Just refer to your old EGMs and Game Fan Magazines

a Kid Chameleon sequel would be awesome, the comic book story told about the Kid chameleon entering the virtual arcade 2 times.

Okay, 1: In Axelay, on the vertical stages, your ship does NOT "Center itself", it moves faster than the camera, and the CAMERA follows the ship and centers ITSELF, this makes dodging obstacles a bit less challenging, IE your ship wont slide into the rocks near the later parts of the first stage, but the camera will still center itself. I never even noticed this until someone pointed it out. [But I will admit it can get a little strange feeling. And it DOES NEED A SEQUEL.] And 2, Locoroco maintains a childish tone and is kind of easy, as it was meant for younger players, the challenge comes from the secret levels and finding all the secrets in each stage. And indeed the voices ARE gibberish, this was done to make translation/regionalization so much easier, only the text needs to be translated, not the voice! This DRAMATICLY reduces production costs, making the Locoroco games cheap! So yeah, why don't they make a Sequel if the games are so cheap? Bad sales. They were released on a system nobody bought and ignored by the "hardcore gamers". If you were "Gamer" enough to buy a PSP, you were "Too Cool" to play a colorful game meant for a younger player. The Locoroco games are still wonderful. And I will proudly admit I have the soundtrack and listen to it all the time! Axelay and Locoroco badly need sequels. Gamesack, I really love you guys.

Firstly, Streets of Rage did sort of get sequels after SoR3. Fighting Force on the PS1, N64 & PC was originally going to be a 3D Streets of Rage title, but the name was changed. Secondly, Streets of Rage was also released on the Master System, so it definitely didn't only have Genesis releases.

I'm still waiting for a sequel to the Lunar series (Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue), which are easily some of my favorite RPGs ever. I was a huge fan of the Sega CD releases, and Working Designs did an excellent job on the PlayStation remakes. The PSP release (Lunar: Silver Star Harmony) was really fun as well.

I'd like to see a sequel to the Shinobi series on the PS2 (Shinobi, Nightshade). I really enjoyed those games alot! I loved the difficulty and the game mechanics (the killer sword that get stronger with each kill, and the ninja shadow dupe you leave to trick the AI). I'd also really want a GunValkyrie sequel. Loved it's very unique jetpack/acrobatic flying mechanics. I don't think any of those made money for Sega, and I think those teams have disbanded, but like you guys said, one can dream!
