From what I recall, the guys who made ToeJam & Earl didn't want to make the sequel a side-scroller, but Sega basically forced them to do it anyway since they were the ones publishing it. In 2019, they had a Kickstarter for ToeJam & Earl Back In the Groove and this one plays pretty much like the first one. It's available on all the major platforms. If you like the first one, you'll probably like that one.

I honestly thought he was joking how haven't I heard of this game, it must be that much more awkward making a game without a mascot. But I would imagine game development would of been far cheaper back then even adjusting for inflation. Because the cloest thing we have these days is the BK games, which are more like mini games. But I don't think it made financial sense to make a full priced BK game. Although it could be good marketing, even if it doesn't turn out that great.

Vandal-Hearts II, on the PSX. The first one had such great music, memorable characters made more alive by simultaneous personified text portraits and sprites (blinking, moving mouths via dialogue scroll, etc), and an incredibly deep story. So much detail went into making that game. Vandal Hearts II however suffers from a large cast of wholly unlikable characters (worsened by really ugly realistic-looking still-frame portraits), a completely forgettable plot, and some really unvaried battle objectives and dumb technical game play design choices.
@sjake8308
@sjake8308 4 жыл бұрын
I think more than anything, Vandal Hearts II was let down by the nonsensical turn system. It became a sub-game where I had to factor in which of the enemies was going to attack which of my characters before I inputted a command. If it wasn't for that, I might have found the sequel to have been as enjoyable as the original.

I agree. I liked Zelda 2 precisely because it was different. I will admit that I bought it new for $40 or $50 so I was kind of obligated to play through it back then, but it still a good game. One of my favorite NES games. I think if Zelda 2 played just like Zelda 1, same overhead style and everything, it may have actually got a bit boring and repetitive.

Devil May Cry 2 epitomizes this for me. I don't think I've been more disappointed in a game. The first one was a fun, if rough around the edges hack and slash action adventure with fun combat, interesting environments, and challenging difficulty. Devil May Cry 2 has none of these. The combat was rendered incredibly unsatisfying, with the sword having all of the weight of a goddamn butter knife, and all the satisfaction of one used as a demon killing weapon, the environments were made too big and open for the design of the game (Resulting in some ABSOLUTELY HORRID MOMENTS WITH THE CAMERA. (Even worse than the first game if you can believe that.)) and of course, the difficulty was nerfed down by a ton, with the guns basically being a slow, tedious "Get out of battle free" card. It also somehow managed to have even worse cutscenes and story than the first game. Yes, the first game was notorious for having absolutely horrible voice acting, but at least that was entertaining. Here, the game has pretty much one stand-out laugh your ass out bad voice acting moment, and everything else is just a boring, incomprehensible mess. The worst thing a game can do is bore you, and Devil May Cry 2 did nothing but this, making the measly two hours I spent on the game feel like an eternity.

I never understood the negativity directed at Zelda II. In retrospect, it's easy to say it's the black swan of the series, but the developers did try out new things in the sequel which is rare these days. The game was much more difficult which is good and bad, and I thought the RPG elements worked wonderfully. I think the music is the best of the series as well. You make good points though and I think it will undoubtedly remain a polarizing title for Zelda fans.

Funny you guys mention Crystal Pepsi, maybe cover the Pepsi Man game in one of your Left In Japan eps (unless you already covered it I have a 50/50 feeling you either have or haven't covered that one). Disappointing follow up, if you're not sticking to the format of it following an original, Final Fantasy 8. My friend and I were just so let down by 8 in the way it played as well as the story. Same with FFX too, 9 had me hopeful the series was back on track and then I played the demo disc for X and just felt like, 'the fuck is this happy horse shit?'

Medievil II. First of all it continues a story that ended perfectly and had NO NEED for a sequel. And on top of that it doesn't live up to the fun imaginative madness of the original by setting the game in 1880s London instead of the fictional kingdom of Gallowmere. Gallowmere let the developers create their own lore and a cast of wacky but awesome characters. Whereas Victorian London kind of limits them to the places and people of those times. Like Jack the Ripper. I am not bullshitting you Jack the Ripper is actually in this game. And he's basically British Freddy Kreuger. Also there's no longer a free roaming feel where you can do some levels in any order you want. Now the game is completely linear and only lets you complete the game in the order it wants you to. And finally it has a TERRIBLE ending that's not only a cliffhanger but also makes no goddamned sense and just leaves you saying "...what in the hell was THAT?!" For the longest time I had II and not I. I am so glad that's been reversed recently. =3

Disappointing follow ups for me, hmm. Sonic 2 and other Sonic games after Sonic 1 on the Master System and Game Gear, I didn't enjoy any of the Master System Sonic games other than the excellent Sonic 1, every other Sonic game on the Master System and Game Gear after that game were really bad. Dragon Age 2 was a disappointing sequel, it wasn't terrible but it wasn't Bioware's best by any means. It had some good points like a decent story and decent writing but the game play was weak. It was a game that never should have been rushed out, it had potential but it's unfinished state really hurt the game. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2 was disappointing, it was great until the final section of the game and then it became a very unfinished, very rushed out mess. Suikoden 4 was very disappointing, such a boring game. Suikoden 3 was never released here in the UK so the more immediate game before it was Suikoden 2, which was excellent. Fallout New Vegas, while not terrible by any means, wasn't as good as Fallout 3. While it did have more of a structured story built around revenge, it lacked the emotional context and immersion of Fallout 3. With Fallout 3 I found myself fully engaged and wanting to see more, with New Vegas I didn't feel that same connection since I've never cared for revenge stories all that much. Star Ocean 3 pretty much put me off JRPG's heavily, while Star Ocean 2 had been pretty good, Star Ocean 3 was extremely boring and I hated the twist to the story, I felt it was so poorly considered and done. The Medal Of Honour series started off well enough with my favourite being Medal Of Honour: Underground, but the series soon became very boring and generic. It's still boring and generic today with the reboots.

When I was I kid, I bought (and finished!) Zelda 2 before playing the original Zelda. I really loved it, and it remains one of my favorite games to this day. Seeing this episode again made me think of something. A lot of old game series like Pokemon and Zelda have been really pulling on the nostalgia and rose-coloured lenses factors to pull in older fans. Even Sonic has finally embraced this, and for the first time I see fans getting excited for a new Sonic game. Thing is, would that mean that triple A gaming franchises are stagnating in terms of creative freedom and innovation, having forced to belch out the same stuff as 10+ years ago just with some new stuffs added?

To be fair, I think any NES Zelda sequel would probably not have been as popular as the original. I did love the second one, though. Replaying it today, I'm considerably more frustrated with it because the sword really is frustratingly small. I can certainly understand the disdain some have for it, but I think the differences the game experimented with are what made it unique. I like sequels that try something different rather than just continuing with the status quo.

I played TLOZ and thought it was kind of boring. Link was much better.

Bionic Commando. The first game on NES was spectacular. Took some time to get used to the momentum, but once I did, I was pulling all sorts of crazy stunts and challenges. I always wanted a sequel. Yet not one of the follow-ups *BC ps3/360, Rearmed, Rearmed 2) have come even close to capturing the magic of the original.

Agreed. That game sucks. At least Capcom realized it and actually came out with Strider 2 on the PS1. It was much more enjoyable.

I believe teefury was the place I purchased that fine shirt. I am not a big fan of Rage but I really think the whole idea fits Bowzer fairly well.

arguably Gunstar Super Heroes is inferior to the Original. Arguably Advance Guardian Heroes is inferior. I do enjoy them all, and it isn't so cut and dry, but I do hear people complain about it. Personally I enjoy Gunstar Super Heroes, and Advance Guardian Heroes more than the originals, hens the word "arguably."

Less fun than earnest evans? What are you implying about earnest evans? I thought that was a fun game. I played it back in the day without having access to reviews or anyone to tell me it was bad and thought it was a really weird, fun game. Right next to atomic runner.

I loved the Saturn version of Spot Goes to Hollywood! The levels in the Saturn/PS1 versions are completely different from the Genesis version. The isometric view does take a lot of getting used to but you do get the hang of it after a while.
