I really hope you make part 2. And I'm guessing you held back Dungeon Master for it. As the best selling ST game of all time. I do like that you spent a good amount of time on each game and didn't just rattle through 20 games superficially with stock footage etc. Thanks!

Whoa!!!! You just blew my mind with that Xenon footage. I always thought the game was graphically like the first 3 sectors, as I guess I never got further than that. But the organic looking level in Sector 4 (I had to look it up) explains the direction they took in Xenon 2 graphically better. Thanks for expanding my mind.

Speedball II is a tricky one, the SPRITES were done on the Amiga and ported to the ST and the game held up whilst the Amiga star design floor design was done for the pitch. Robert Trevellyan of Bitmap Bros, stated he wanted to change the money-minded porting of ST graphics to his dream machine, the Amiga.

Great video, Pete. Sadly, I've never seen a real ST in my life, but a very interesting video anyway. Kick Off does look and play better than Sensible Soccer. I'm not much into football games, but played both on consoles, and enjoyed Kick Off more.

@@onaretrotip Yeah, I'm not into sports games in general, but I do like some classics. SNK's Baseball Stars 2 and Neo Turf Masters, all of the Kunio Kun sport games, and the FIFA games, Striker and International Superstar Soccers on the Sega Genesis are quite good. As for "modern" games, the last football game I played was FIFA 98 on PC.

Lovely to hear the Dragon Breed OST in the background. Especially the arcade original of that track is one of my favourites. I'm actually a bit mindblown that this list contained Kick Off, Xenon and Speedball 2, all of which I'd always kind of assumed due to their huge uptake on the system and those ports always being the talked about ones had started life on the Amiga. Also reassuring to hear you say Speedball 2 has god-level AI. I always thought I was just crap at it lmao. One I only really play with a mate that one xD.

Xenon 2 was probably the last game I got for my ST. I could not believe how good it was at the time. Graphics, game play and audio all were awesome. I actually had a 1040 STE by this time and don't know if that made any difference. Nice vid. I still have my STE, very yellowed. Barbarian had a bit more influence, in the form of Obliterator. Okay the point-and-click control interface was a bit of a mistake, but it would go on to be used to GREAT success with Dungeon Master and Carrier Command, among others. It just needed some refinement and it worked better in first person. Also, the engine of Barbarian and Obliterator was just plain sluggish due to the middling frame rate.

David H. Lawson (Barbarian) clearly flunked Game Design 101. I never actually tried playing Barbarian. I tried playing Obliterator, which he also programmed, and which used the same stupid control scheme. I turned it off after about one minute and never touched it again. And if this series is about the start of game franchises, wouldn't it have been better to choose the original Speedball? After all, that one started the Speedball series.

Yes, hideous control scheme. Couldn't include the original Speedball as it was released for both Amiga and ST (I'm sure I clarified that in the video).
