The ST was simply the best at 3d back in the day.

It's difficult to describe how much better F1 Grand Prix was than any racing game that had preceded it. Geoff Crammond was a genius! Loved Carrier Command too.

We love AtariSt. 3D на Атари СТ впечатляет, особенно если учитывать, что частота процессора там всего 8 МГц. !

One thing I really appreciated about Atari ST Star Wars was that both buttons could fire (which they changed to left mouse button only in Empire Strikes Back). This made it a LOT easier to just blast away rapid fire.

In the right hands the ST could rival anything else out there during its heyday. So good to see a video that shows off what it really could do! Also ad Vroom to this list.

I don't think so; it could not rival the mighty Amiga

@@ninjaalex-yf5io With games like Vroom, Stunt Car Racer, Captain Blood, No Second Prize, Robocop 3, Xenon 2 Megablast etc on the ST I agree the machine couldn't hold it's own;-).

Vroom isn't really a 3D game, it's a more traditional sprite-based racing game.

@@lurkerrekrul Ok no worries, but Stunt Car Racer and Robocop 3 certainly are.

@@ninjaalex-yf5io especially for 3D games it could rival and beat the Amiga, as the ST had a faster CPU (8Mhz vs 7.1 for the amiga...)

The 16-bit version of Elite was a huge disappointment to me. I played Elite quite a bit on the C64 and when I first saw the Amiga version (basically the same as the ST version), I was blown away by the fast, smooth, solid graphics. However the more I played it, the more empty it felt compared to other versions. Whenever you jump toward a planet and it stopped because you encountered other ships, it was almost always an attack. In fact, I can't remember ever encountering any neutral ships. It would always instantly alert you to the fact that you were under attack whereas the other versions made you wait to see if the ship(s) would attack or if they were just other innocent traders. This allowed you to come to a stop and snipe the enemy ships from a distance. If you had a military laser, you could often destroy the other ships without them ever getting close enough to return fire. Thargoids, which are supposed to be the enemy of all other races, are used as regular enemies in the game, attacking you next to other pirates. The whole thing started to feel like an arcade shooting gallery rather than a simulation. Hyperspace to a system, jump toward the planet, stop to kill 1-3 pirates, rinse and repeat. One time I was waiting just outside the safe zone on a dangerous world. As soon as something attacked me, I'd go into the safe zone, they'd stop attacking, then I could leave it and shoot them down one at a time. This worked until a Thargoid showed up. I was having trouble killing it as I was already weakened from fighting other ships, so I headed into the safe zone. It followed me. I decided to run for the space station, but I was getting hammered, so I started shooting back. As soon as I did that, the police came out and helped the Thargoid kill me. They couldn't even be bothered to implement the two different types of space stations that many (most?) other versions had. I mean, if the C64 version could handle them, there's no excuse for leaving them out of the 16-bit versions, other than laziness. To be fair, the DOS versions didn't have them either. It also crashed relatively often, although that could be due to the fact that I only had pirated copies. The C64 version, although being much slower, and only having wireframe graphics, managed to feel like a living world much more than the Amiga/ST versions. :(

Interesting video, did not realise there were so many 3D games produced for the ST. One thing which might help with the presentation is you could give the title of the game on top of the image. I know you have the list, but I find it distracting to flick back and fore.

Armour-Geddon missing in this list. I remember having so much fun with this game especially in the multiplayer mode with two Atari ST just needed a serial cable.

Indeed, there are many MANY more 3d games for the ST. Many more than I thought before starting to create this video. But I had to limit it to 30 (normally 25), so I had to skip a lot of them. Also F16 Combat Pilot, F29, F15, Drakkhen, Midwinter 2, Legend of Valour, Robinson, Vaxine, Fighter Bomber, a320 Airbus, Blue Max, Sleeping Gods lie, Sentinel, Robocop 3, Chuck Yeager and Mig29 have been on my list. But it was just too much to put them all in 1 video. Maybe I will do a second part soon. However, It seems that I missed powerdrome completely, will check it out soon.
