Problem is that all those kitbashed bits aren't in the box to start with. So if someone doesn't have any extra stuff lying around they end up with a "vanilla" kit like on the box or getting on ebay. The old box was generous with the custom bits so you could actually thin things out to give you left overs. The main advantage with Primaris scale it that the painting experience is much better. Its really easy to paint them well. The new Lemartes is an awesome model because it actually looks different than all the other jump pack guys. Astorath is also pretty much flawless for me, which gets me all the more grumpy when they get lazy with other kits! The dual handed hammer looks great!

Hibou khan is more a white scar than korsarro. The lion horus heresy sculpt is better than any of the new dark angel character sculpts by itself without including the special leviathan and contemporary dreadnoughts, deathwing companions, the interemptors, the inner circle knights cenobium or the characters marduk sedras, and corswain. The problem isn’t the styling, it’s the corporate stuff - moving things to legends to prod people into buying the new stuff, the lazy design decisions that from the outside look like they’re are all about profit. The point gets made in the video that GW sell themselves short, bet they just can’t be bothered, creativity takes time and money and shareholders aren’t going to pay for that. Space Marines all look the same, do you like the upscaled Terminators and Scouts? Everyone does. It’s the slow sucking of character out of the models that people get dissatisfied at, and the price gauging.

@@cyclone8974 modern GW doesn’t really encourage creativity take terrain for an example nowadays you have a plastic kit for all the terrain you would want from the 1980s but back then they would usually give you ideas and how to make your own cardboard terrain of the same thing just using house supplies. It’s not financially viable for the customer to make his own product. GW isn’t a humble studio anymore. We can look back in the old days fondly but nothing is gonna change while GW makes a profit off any and every model kit they make

While I agree they dropped the ball I had to get box for my army and im doing very simple things like adding the old jump packs and adding an inferno pistol for every pistol because rule of cool. If only they added some more X based iconography on some bits it would have been an easy fix. All of those 20 potential jump pack assault intercessors, Lemartes, Astorath, and the death company dread for a steal 210 I paid and that I would be paying for those 20 intercessors let alone 2 characters and a brutalis dread.

Its kinda wild to believe how in 2nd we got a metal death company kit Which then 3rd or 4th ed got replaced by a new more modern death company kit which was also metal, But then that kit got replaced with a legendary plastic kit that any real blood angel fan will get just to make their primaris or even 30k army look even more like blood angels. Then we got primaris death company, which was a joke as it was 5 intercessors with a single upgrade sprue for the price of 10 normal intercessors. And now we do get a good upgrade sprue for the whole army, but we dont get real death company anymore

the biggest issue is that there's so little effort to distinguish them from the default assault squad - there's not even some X-symbol shoulder pads to assist the painter. As for accessibility - moulding parts with iconography goes a long way towards that - saving the painter from having to freehand all the symbols

The upgrade sprue was an absolute disappointment. One helmet? A Chainsword? 2 Power Swords? A ridiculous amount of shoulder pads? The Eviscerator, bare heads, inferno pistol, they are good. I bought the box for the characters, the good parts of the upgrade sprue, and the codex. The generic models are whatever. What I agree with you on, White DC, that is where it is at. Angels Encarmine also have White Sanguinary Guard.

Modern DC is a shoulder pad. You couldn't go far with old kits? The BA tactical squad was huge as far as parts go. Old DC was a mine of bits.

Not only that but for the kitbashing side of things, the only things cross compatible on the new kits (without cutting and sculpting) is arms and heads, while every bit of the old kits were compatible with nearly every other kit.

The first born kits had more bits and were more characterful overall. The bodies may not have been as good, but just about everything else is better on the older kits

I don't understand the argument. Everything since 7th has been about generic kits and marketability. Why would they market a kit of death company with bits from other kits... These are things you do when you become more experienced in the hobby not buying your first box

As an Angels Sanguine collector the decal sheet was the most exciting part of this release, though I definitely feel for the angels encarmine collectors with their new white decals. Overall the primaris kits are fine, I don’t mind the poses, it’s just the repetition of the same 5 that I find annoying. Yes you can use bits from other primaris bits. But that’s not an advantage unique to primaris. Every one of my firstborn death company have different legs and torsos because I am able to mix and match bits from the whole firstborn range. Much like the primaris, a bit of cork on the base makes a massive difference to the poses of firstborn jump pack infantry as you can get very similar leaping from tactical rock poses. The upgrade sprue is fine, but I think the biggest disappointment was that it doesn’t include any death company cross shoulder pads, which seemed like a no brainer to me. Having to freehand all those details doesn’t appeal to me at all. It and the dark angels sprue definitely feel like let downs after the amazing black templars one. The new kits certainly aren’t bad. For my latest jump assault intercessor squad I used the new 30k assault marines (with 40k jump packs) and was amazed at how good those poses were without needing to be leaping off tactical rocks. I expect I will continue to mix firstborn with primaris in the future, using cork to keep everyone around the same height.

i love the assault intercessor kit. my issue is that we didnt get new death company. instead what we got was assault intercessors and assault intercessors with jump packs alongside upgrade sprews. and they didnt even include the proper weapons for their new rules. you should be able to run up to 3 power fists in a 10 man death company with jp but they only included 2.

i can agree to the initial point, but i think the fact that they omit a lot of options make people feel like their models are that much more unique when they change things up.

I did the exact same thing with the assault intercessor power fist 😂 it’s so much better. I’ve also been using the first born bolters to replace the plain heavy bolt pistols. The size is pretty much the same. Clip the middle part of the magazine off, glue the end back on, it looks almost identical in shape!

Great video, you had the same thought as me about successor chapters. I'm thinking of doing the 10 assault intercessors in the new combat patrol as Flesh Tearers to add a little bit of flavour (and avoid yet more yellow helmets!). Also agree that there are loads of cool things you can do with the stuff in this kit.

You can actually do alot with the new upgrade sprew if you put the bits on the legs chest and arms. Lots of skull and bones which are thematic for death company. Only problem is outside of this boxset the upgrade sprew plus a kit towork with is feicing expensive.

So glad I bought into Black Templars when they dropped. The range is brilliant, best looking space marines since 2nd/3rd Ed metals imo (not a fan of the mid 2000s marines, all got a bit derpy looking). Was very keen on Dark Angels/Blood Angels also but seeing the lacklustre refreshes, I'm glad with my original choice.

Once again we disagree more than agree. You're just always strongly biased against any of the strengths that the FB kits have over these, which they do. BUT I do agree that GW is not doing a good enough job showing off the kits. I also agree the heads all look nice. I like Primaris generally but I do strongly dislike these jump kits. Upgrade sprue is ok. I like the character models mostly but there's some definite changes I'd make.

Just generally, we are losing flavour across the board with space marines. The moulded pauldron, a sgt helmet, isn't good enough. Here's a generic kit put this on it and paint it this way and boom a replacement to your old full kit is just awful really

@viggoeriksson805 They arnt removing bloat otherwise you wouldn't have twenty versions of intercessors with a different gun, they'd just be tactical squads. But also for the "special" space marines with their own codex, those differences were the flavour of running that sub faction. How they look what you can equip them with. They were differences between those kits and options, but now they are just being crammed together.

They're not "bad", it's just we recently got a really nice Dark Angels refresh, and a great Black Templars refresh before that, both of which came with a lot of chapter flavor. This one just seems too safe, plain, and boring, considering Blood Angels have a certain aesthetic as well.

I think all the kits are good, but I also feel like they could have been a lot better. Your 7/10 is not far off the mark. Maybe 6. Although I'll also say that the Lemartes model is head and shoulders the best model of the year. I put together the Deff Dread recently - not a new kit by any means - and I'd say it's very Warhammer. It's ridiculous, but in a very distinctive GW style that says Warhammer to me. I just don't get that character from the Primaris kits. They don't have that soul. Maybe I've just left my space marine roots behind.

The only good thing in the new line is one or two of the characters that got an upgrade that is about it. These kits are super limited, boring and plain. Its this stuff by people end up going to 3d printing not only for bits, but whole models by other creators and the pricing isnt helping GW. They up the prices more and more often to keep up with less sales. My local gaming store used to sell out of every big box set straight away if not before from pre orders today I can go in and get limited box sets still for sale months later.

Primaris ruined Space Marines

While I didn't go for the box in the end and am doing something else with my 'not going to be Deathwatch ' marines, I do have opinions on the matter in that I'm from a time when chapters were 'differently coloured' space marines, with some character in the, er, characters... and since returning (for about the 3rd time) I was put off by Blood Angels wings and overt blood/vampire sillyness, and put off by Ultramarines overtly Romanesque styling and put off by Salamanders overt dragon styling... In my opinion, it had gone so far as to be cheesy/naff. It's analogous to their armour looking like a tween's pair of customised Crocs. Even Blanche & Co say that chapters weren't intended to be much more than different colours, besides a little bit of flavour. That said, while they have been toned down to a more respectable baseline, they do then need to take advantage of the scope for posing, transfers, updated paint schemes,etc. For example, rather than just another 'yellow-ey gold', they could be incredibly bright/shiney, to convey the same idea/intent that the (rather less implicit) wings did.

Your argument seems to be for: less punk/personality in favor of more corpo 'greige' I staunchly oppose that. The inner circle knights cenobium somehow still have more personality and dynamism than the new deathing knights. The photos marines and their actual tactical tube socks tucked in combat crocs. It's 'tacticool' but a barren wasteland of culture and temperament. Imagine playing infantry ironhands and only getting three metal arms and face augs.

As someone who has to completely rebuild their Death Company army because of the refresh, I felt the same way until I came to this realization. Why would they go through the effort of updating the armor and adding detail when they have a large chunk of old sprue they can get folks to buy to kitbash their own. They knew people would just kitbash their own so why go through the trouble of having to create new detailed armor pieces when you have old inventory you can now sell off at a higher price because of the refresh. Same with Sanguinary guard, they're hitting two birds with one stone.

I have to agree. I was on the fence about jumping in and starting something fresh/adding to my pile of shame. The marketing just didn't get me there. Having seen more people working with them the sculpts are a lot better than they initially looked.

I think GW is trying to move 40k design in a sleek, clean, modern direction that's actually at odds with the lore. The fans want to see more details, yet they stubbornly continue on in the plaim direction. I think this is a difference in class distinction. The billionaire wants things understated and working class wants to see drip. And btw, ain't nobody playing fruckin Angels Encarmine and Angels Sanguine! They're boring.
