My older sister sold tons of wrapping paper at school to get me Super Mario Bros 3 as a present when I was little. Also, when I was 17, she preordered and surprised me with Ocarina of Time from Toys R Us She passed away in 2015 and I take great comfort knowing that once upon a time she held these games in her hands and gave them to me. Games like Path of Radiance would leave my collection before this ever would.

I think the one that holds a lot of value for me is Demon's Souls (PS3). In my country it's been natural since forever to play everything pirated so I only very rarely saw non-pirated games, "originals" as we call them, from afar. This was the normal state of affairs in my childhood and buying pirated copies was the status quo. Since the PS3 was the first console I got with my own money I decided I was gonna stay legit and treasure every game. Demon's Souls was my first game. I even purchased it before I got the console. Aside from being an amazing game it's special for me and even if I get the PS5 version later on, I don't think I'd ever sell it.

During the first half of the 1980s, my mother worked in an independent computer store that sold some Apples and PCs, but mainly a lot of Commodores. My brother and I had a ton of Commodore 64 games that we'd copied from friends, and there were a few that we'd bought at the store as well. One year, my mother decided that she wanted to talk to her co-workers about what she should get us, as well as look at some magazine articles. In the end, she decided to get us "Spindizzy," which my brother and I both tried and found to be really, really hard. I do remember that when you'd run out of time and the game would end, it would show on the subsequent title screen how close you'd gotten to completing it, and neither of us could get more than 10-15 percent of it done. Enjoyed it, but it was insanely hard.

I agree about vinyl reissues being pointless. After buying Slayer’s Show no Mercy and Hell Awaits reissues it doesn’t sound like the original vinyls. I’ll just spend the 100$ for each of them and get the original Metal Blade versions. I mostly collect metal vinyls. I bought the Revenge of Shinobi vinyl and it was 40$. For a new vinyl that’s ridiculously expensive! They need to improve the packaging if they’re gonna do that.

Having a digital audio master doesn't defeat the purpose of pressing to vinyl...plenty of releases were being mastered to Digital Audio Tape back in the 80s when vinyl was still the dominant format. The problem comes when today's mixing and mastering engineers, not to mention musicians, are clueless about the unique considerations for vinyl (optimal running times per side/optimal frequency cutoffs/no stereo-panned bass/etc) and don't account for them. So then you get people releasing 50+ minutes of crazy high-frequency electronic music, or blistering metal or whatever, on an awful-sounding single LP because no one told them not to, or they were confident enough about making a quick buck on their instantly collectible vinyl release that someone told them and they didn't really care. All the same issues would still exist if those kinds of releases were cut from a traditional analog master tape; it's just that no one making that particular series of bad decisions would ever bother shelling out for tape, or even likely know they could pursue that option in the first place.

@PSspecialist
@PSspecialist 3 жыл бұрын
NOPE! You can find NES and SNES games that are just as playable now as they were then. I'll be honest and say that it's probably less than 1% of the library (in terms of holding up to modern standards) but they DO exist. If something like Super Metroid came out as an indie title today it would still be considered fantastic. Would it get lost in a sea of other brilliant indie titles? Possibly. But you would be able to play it and not bat an eye that it's from a different era.
@Mr_Don1

@@PSspecialist lol, that's fair. I was being hyperbolic, but it's definitely most, if not all. The 16-bit era of gaming is probably still my favorite, specifically the Sega Genesis.
@PSspecialist
@PSspecialist 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mr_Don1 It depends on what you mean by "suck". At the risk of annoying Pat reading these comments I agree that there's a case to be made that most retro games haven't aged gracefully at all. There are certain gameplay conveniences that I take for granted nowadays that I cannot do without. Something as simple as entering an armory in an RPG and the game telling me at a glance whether the items on sale will improve my party, without having to crunch the numbers myself. You can't argue around the fact that things like that suck and are a waste of your time. The fact that games "simply didn't use to do that back then" is irrelevant. They do it now so I expect that feature now. The fact that I miss that feature worsens my gameplay experience. Same goes for things like lack of checkpoints, limited lives etc. That doesn't make most retro games irredeemable however. They can still be fun to play. That's a different point entirely. So if by "suck" you mean that they're unplayable and there's no value in experiencing them if you're younger, I'd have to disagree.
@Mr_Don1
@Mr_Don1 3 жыл бұрын
@@PSspecialist there are many retro games that are still fun to play today, but most are not. As I stated before, I was exaggerating in my original comment, lol, although I believe that it is true for most games. I think we mostly agree. There are definitely a lot of retro games that are fun for younger gamers. Actually, one of my biggest issues with modern games is the level of difficulty. LOL. That's one thing I like better about retro games.
