Vanishing Point for PS1 (no relation to the movie), despite coming out a year after Gran Turismo 2, had horribly dated graphics and floaty controls at least as bad as Hooters: Road Trip. Not to mention the shallow game content. The only positive quality is the techno/trance soundtrack.

IIRC the guy running the company that hired Rebecca to do the port had no idea how game development actually worked and thought adding stuff like new weapons and enemies was as simple as dragging-and-dropping. He DID however know music, and that's why the soundtrack is so awesome and the only redeeming factor of the port. Doom on the 3DO is bad, but it's a miracle that it even came out at all. Much like Doom on the SNES or Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the... SNES. Weird how the majority of people only use the "yeah it sucks but it's impressive" card when it's a Nintendo game, huh.

SNK NEO GEO tech explainer coming (with regard to RIDING HERO): For all the excellent stuff the machine can do it has a big flaw when compared to every single console from the NES and Master System up to the Saturn and almost every arcade of that period: The NEO GEO has ONLY sprites to draw the screen. A LOT of HUGE sprites. This would not be a problem in most cases as instead of background tiles you just move sprites. However you cannot really do RASTER effects with sprites. The classic 8 bit and 16 bit ROAD effect (Out run, hang on, or even the floor in Street Fighter 2) is done by moving the background at a different pace for every scanline. However this appears to be something very tricky to achieve with sprites (the ones in the NEO GEO are thin and tall, as tall as the whole screen height). Riding Hero and that nice Golf game are the only NG games even attempting this and it is obvious that the approach is different.

I do hope one day that someone will release an optimised Doom port for the Sega Saturn so we can see for real what the Saturn was capable of with Doom. Shame in hindsight Lobotomy Software didn't handle the conversion and id Software wasn't told to reverse course on their decision to not use a custom engine. While Doom was a slideshow, Lobotomy managed to port Quake, a game that was considered impossible for the Saturn to handle, to the console.

@15:35 - That's not a collision detection issue. In that situation the rules of baseball require the runner to be tagged with the glove/ball...tagging the base isn't sufficient. Why? If the previous base is unoccupied the runner has the option to return to the other base. If the previous base is occupied the runner has no where else to go so the base can be tagged.

The "texture change" issue you mention in that motorcycle game I promptly forgot the name of, is due to bad mipmapping management. Mipmapping is a rendering technique which selects a different texture to display for a polygon as a function of distance. The goal of it being to avoid the heavy pixel flickering that happens when a single texture is used for all distances: by selecting the best texture for the distance the graphics usually feel a lot smoother and nicer. You can generally notice early 3D games which use Mipmapping because on flat surfaces there is a visible transition between those textures at the transition distance. This is particularly visible on driving games because that line usually stays at the same place on screen. In that game's case, either there are two few Mipmapping levels (there seems to be only two when 4-5 would probably be more appropriate) or they just set the transition distance way too close to the camera. You generally notice Mipmapping artifacts on recent games because all GPUs now support anisotropic filtering which blends the two most appropriate Mimap textures as they transition into one another on a per pixel basis. Hope this helps!

Have a suggestion for a future episode, how about bad games that have really good soundtracks. Thinking about how games from Ocean Software often have better music than the game itself, thought it would be a good topic for you to talk about.

The fact that Quake ran much better on the Saturn really puts into perspective how badly executive meddling kneecapped its Doom port.

You mean Quake that practically had to be completely redesigned to work on Saturn hardware, unlike Doom that was trying to be something of a port.....Not everything is "executive meddling" no matter how much some people love to fart that out about every game...Sometimes games are just designed or ported badly
@MortimerZabi
@MortimerZabi 3 жыл бұрын
@@lutherheggs451 I know they used the Powerslave engine for the Saturn Quake and that it didn’t run the Quake engine. I humbly opine that's not relevant. The point is that a much more serviceable version of Doom, regardless of what engine it used, could have been made but in a rare moment of shortsightedness, John Carmack blocked it. Not a knock on him, he is a far smarter man than I will ever be. Sometimes people just don't make the best decisions.

It's interesting to note that those Neo-Geo "look at how much better we are" ads got the Genesis and TG16 sprites per scanline and audio channel specs reversed, making the Genesis look extra weak. Even without knowing the specs, anyone who's extensively played both systems knows that TG16 side-scrolling games were a lot more likely to suffer from sprite flicker and while the audio chip produced some awesome chip tunes, it never quite sounded as "real" as the Genesis audio drivers that used all 6 FM + 4 PSG channels, like the ones utilized by Koshiro, Sakimoto and the Technosoft audio guys.
