I think it was a little too bare-bones to really be considered a classic. It's really good while it lasts, but there's not much left once you've beaten it.

From a design perspective, it seems like such a waste to me that bosses die in one hit. Then again, I'm the kind of gamer that purposely lets enemies live to see their animations.

Well when you're playing it for the first time you're gonna have plenty of opportunities to see their animations. Over and over and over again.
