The M37A3 actually has an interesting lore reason for why it's being used by the marines so far into the future. It wasn't made for the military, it was a civilian market shotgun made by Armat to get in on the market of people who like to buy modern reproductions of older guns, kind of like how some companies make modernized M1897 Trench Guns today, and it got pretty popular. But the Colonial Marines started noticing squads using their personal requisition allocations (which are a real thing in the modern military) to purchase them for personal use, or just bringing their own from home when they were deployed and decided "well, if hundreds if not thousands of Marines are spending their requisition on these shotguns instead of other things, maybe there's something to it." and got Armat to make them a proper military model.

This was wonderfully charming. Jonathan's enthusiasm for the franchise was evident throughout and elevated the video! A reaction to the firearms of Alien Isolation would be fascinating since they take more of their inspiration from the 70's aesthetic of Ridley's original film and less from the ubiquitous inspirations of Cameron's sequel. 16:27 If i had to wager a guess - this weapon functions on the same principle as the real life gyro jet (upscaled and improved) or the warhammer boltor. In warhammer, the main problem with the boltor is recoil - because it combines a traditional firing casing with a projectile which also has rocket properties (the main failure of the gryo jet). By attaching the entire gun to a rig and harness system with built in stabilizer and mechanical supports: you provide a platform to take the recoil and support the wait of the gun. Think of a Mark 19, with rotary magazine instead of belt, and longer projectiles which include high thrust propellants for rocket flight. Oddly enough.... this is doable with current technology. It would be clunky and a bit unwieldy, but we could actually produce this weapon today. It's not far off from the idea behind the OICW, but with projectiles which include rocket propellant after initial ignition of the conventional casing propellant. Perhaps not all that practical with current technology, but able to be made. Take a standard 40mm grenade, double the body length of the projectile, and have a double firing sequence where by it's launched from a rifled barrel and upon exiting - automatically extends fins and ignites the rocket propellant to perhaps as much as double the range of the projectile. The recoil - from firing such a heavy round would be extreme - but that becomes a non-issue if you did have the aliens universe rig and suspension system: or if it were mounted as such implements commonly are. It's not the worst idea for a gun which I've seen come from scifi media, but over time we've discovered that rotary magazines just aren't very practical. They're big, heavy, clunky, unwieldy, difficult to carry multiples of effectively: a belt is simply more efficient in terms of loading mechanisms, reliability and transporting them. Still - the round and weapon, as depicted, could actually work, using existing technologies available to us today - which is rather fascinating.

The Hyperdine break open shotgun is mentioned as a civilian design that some marines got for themselves. A fun note on the pulse rifle, there's an audiobook (name escapes me at the moment) that goes through the whole history of the rifle, according to lore it was built by a descendant of John Moses Browning, and had a similar story to the "potato digger" machine gun where John showed up with it and they all laughed at him, until a few thousand continuous rounds later (unheard of at the time) of his machine gun still running.

Also, speaking of Fire team elite weapons, I'd like to see what you think of the DLC weapons for the game. One of the latest weapons we got is (I believe) a .50 caliber heavy pulse rifle.
@skeemnave48823 жыл бұрын
in fairness to the burst rifle, the precision adjustable stock appears to indicate a dedicated marksman's weapon. In-game lore mentions they were Accurized as well. the longer sight radius and modified cocking handle seem to be related to its status as a failed weapon that saw limited use, as described in the in-game lore. It could be that these were changes being prototyped for the next generation of pulse rifles, but when the M41a3 fell through they were scrapped with the rifle.

Don't know if Jonathan Ferguson reads the comments - but iron sights as a backup when you're using something that requires a power source isn't a bad thing. Sure power sources will be 50x smaller by then... but you're also entering a combat zone where things can go sideways super fast.

The thing about the Colonial Marines you always have to keep in mind is that they do have to deal with threats aside from the Xenos. So while they do have specialized weapons and armor developed to combat them (as any military has done with any specific threat in history) they also have a range of equipment used for other problems. The Kramer 50 isn't much use against Xeno's, but if memory serves it did pretty good in the Aliens/Terminator crossover comics, putting down T-101's with a single shot to the ol bucket. As for the Flechette, I think the rounds have a piercing effect able to hit multiple targets, useful when backed into a deadend hallway but not much else. I get what he is saying though, it's not ideal, but I do love them at least including weapons hinting at other threats they have to deal with...if only the games actually did, rather than just *always* focusing on the Xeno's :/

Actually Jonathan, break open shotguns make alot of sense in the setting: I know it's not used in the game, but only a Break-open allows you to load specialised under or over-length projectiles. I imagine the shotgun being more of a utility tool then a primary weapon (which it is today already) and being capable to load different sizes in projectiles could be useful. Maybe a tracking dart to follow an alien to a nest, some sort of flare or incendiary device, explosive slugs, stakes, idk... While pump guns can handle different loadings already better then a semi auto, only a Break-open would allow you to load an oversized projectile
