People who are really good at these games don't need to look at their own character, they look at the opponent. In fact, they are always forced to look at the opponent's character, so it would probably be a little distracting.

To an extent, absolutely. People who are good at the game will be more focused on the opponent’s character than their own, but there’s not much getting around having your own character in sight. For this reason, I propose that the internal balance system described does more to bridge the gap, allowing girls who play to be on (at least) level playing field with guys for once than to provide a practical tactical decision system.

im a male and i tried playing this, and well, i GOT BORED VERY FAST. primarily because i just DID NOT see the point. sexy outfits and combat, big woop, it WAS NOT DISTRACTING. in fact due to the fact that i needed my brain to play the game i had ZERO bloodflow going anywhere but north to my cerebral cortex and temporal lobes. you cannot have blood flowing two directions at once, it is just medically IMPOSSIBLE. fact was that the game was so challenging that ALL MY ATTENTION was focused on fighting, and ZERO on outfits.

As a woman, I don't particularly mind the sexualisation of women in video games. What annoys me is when the guys all look completely normal, wearing ordinary clothes and getting on with serious plot missions but the girls are walking around half naked fighting over the guys. My idea of gender equality in video games is to have more realistic female characters and to have sexualised men in games that sexualise women, not necessarily to have those women cover up. If all the characters were half naked and sexy then there'd be something for everyone. Either do it to all the characters or none of them - that's my philosophy. (That's why the witcher really bugs me, altho I only know the first one really well. Maybe the other two aren't as bad? But in the first one, apart from a few main characters, the women are literally reduced to sexual trophies. It's a bit of a turn-off for a female player who genuinely likes other aspects of the game.)

As a GUY who has played many, many games, I completely agree with you- it makes me uncomfortable when females are placed in movies/stories/anime/games as just a sexualized TROPHY basically. Though I can't help my natural reaction ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I still get pissed off. Your point about Witcher- the studio's latest game, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the best RPG I have ever played in my life. I have watched playthroughs of Witcher 1 and finished Witcher 2. I can safely say that the studio (CD Projekt Red) has given a lot more thought into the female characters. I've heard about Witcher 1, how you could collect cards of women and prostitutes as trophies, etc. But really, Witcher 3 is much better (IMO). Give it a shot! :)

I'm a woman and when I play DOA I choose all the kinds of outfits, from the most covering clothes to the most revealing outfit, but even if I am attracted to both men and women, I don't appreciate revealing outfits because they arouse me, I appreciate them because I find the woman's body i chose truly beautiful, and not in a sexual way... Like when I see Mamiji in her red ribbon outfit, I don't think "whoaaa she's so hot, i wanna rip that ribbon off of her and...", I just think "she's beautiful", and I am absolutly not aroused. The tournaments can easily be balanced. The girl competitors themselves should simply wear revealing outfits so their male opponents will be distracted by them and slow their reaction time. Hi MatPat, I am a female gamer so I decided to put my two cents and answer the question you asked in the video. I do play DoA from time time ti time and I enjoy it a lot and funny enough I play ONLY female characters. Kasumi, Ayane, Christie, Helena, Hitomi, etc. I do really love to play them, for their different playstyles (Ayane, then Kasumi are my favourites), but I also love them for their physical appearance. I pick the costumes that I find visually attractive, so it could be the colour scheme, type of outfit, or even how cute or sexy a character looks in it. So it can vary. I just go with what I like at that moment. And also I am not bothered at all with the jiggly effect or the over-sexualization (I am just waiting for the storm to come after I post this) as it is A GAME. I am also a feminist so I could go on on the subject and all of the tiny stuff that can be dug out about it, but I tend not to overthink it and just enjoy the game I am playing. If you have any other questions I'd love to answer. Also, keep it up, both of your theory channels are great. :)

In past centuries to eons since prior people back then had the mentality that woman should stay at home and cook dinner raise the kids in past to ancient wars it was mostly always men out fighting these wars so physically it could be passed on from father to son as in ancient times war was commonplace and always made up of male warriors whether it's for land or food war happened often. Unless your a descendant of the Amazons instinct wise, men have the upper hand in reaction time possibly contributed from that. Vaxivop Usually they play the character enough times to become use to it, meaning they are less affected. Since in tournaments players typically train with and play as one or two characters, so the other characters are seen only when fighting against them. At least thats what I assume.

I'd say that that's not true. If you've practiced with the character before, I'd say you've become habituated to the character. Also, I think you pay more attention to your opponent than your own character, because you have to pay attention to them, so you can block, attack etc. But hey, that's just my theory, MY GAME THEORY

As a female player who's easily played DOA for over 7 years, I absolutely love this game. And even while being heterosexual I LOVE the sexy outfits, in fact they're one of the main reasons I enjoy the game. I love the costumes, and the many there are, work hard to get them & love the exciting thrill when I unlock one (esp if the game is new so I don't know what's available). Those costumes are a lot in factoring my skill as well for some reason. The sexier I feel my character is in a costume, the better I play as a whole. I actually choose a sexy costume if I'm really competing as the minor difference in skill is quite major in actual run. It's weird but I kinda chuck it up to just that in real life my own confidence is tied into how I look that day. If I don't feel as good looking in one outfit I'm not as bold, more chill & not as active. I feel like that perspective overall goes into how I play Dead or Alive. The sexier the character I'm playing, the more confidence I feel & the more skilled I am. As a (straight) girl who has played these games many times over, I usually gravitate towards the more revealing outfits on the females. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why; it could be that I like looking at my own character and admiring her appearance maybe not in the same way that men do, but if you look at it another way it really ties into games such as The Sims where players (usually) create their female sims with beautiful curves, big boobs and cute and/or sexy outfits. I guess it is sort of vicarious, you are essentially living through your character and having them be extremely attractive just makes the gameplay more fun; you can put yourself in their shoes and pretend that your this sexy Japanese girl in an nurse outfit when really you're just a potato. Matpat, this theory is pretty spot on... In casual play. I'm no DOA enthusiest, but you also have to take into account that the people who play competitively already have seen all the costumes, animations, and already have matchup knowledge. The best players in fighting games try certain things out with their characters against other type of opponents and try to see what works and what doesn't. If the players like you said "get used to" seeing the costumes, and the competitive players already have seen all the costumes from the hours of practice and competing, it wouldn't effect them.

Picture it this way: you've seen your girlfriend in different underwear many times, but the moment she takes off her day clothing, it doesn't matter if you've seen that particular combination 50 times before, you still get aroused. Now, if after she takes off her clothes and stays in her underwear 1 or 2 hours, you "get used to" it. I thinks that's what the video is talking about, rather than eternal immunity from a costume from having seen it before.

***** That exactly what I am trying to say. Playing fighting games competitively, its all about skill. Think of Evo moment 37. Daigo was not looking just at Justin Wong's Chun Li sprite, he was only looking at her attacks, and parrying them. By putting so many hours into third strike, and only with the use of skill he was able to win that match. At the end of the day, what we see as 2 sexy women fighting on the screen, the computer sees hitboxes. I don't play DOA that much but I play a ton of Skullgirls. Trust me, no one is affected by the hot girls in there.

They are not just good-looking. It's not about having sexy guys and girls as a sign of ~equality. It's about representation. About roles. The role of a sexualized male on DoA is definitely not the same than the girls', even under-aged girls, as you could see in this video. Don't you really see a problem in people finding it normal to use female accentuated sexuality for the sake of industry? Isn't it strange that, for example, you can't find easily a FPS game with a female protagonist (like Portal) but you do can find tons of video games with female characters in 3rd person with suits that would be really unconfortable during a war, or missions or stuff (like Lara Croft and that belts on her almost uncovered legs - why not regular pants? In real life, these belts would be a terrible idea for an adventure person)? It's a issue when you're a little girl that plays video games and loved Cammy because she and Chun-Li were the only females (at my time of SNES). Then you grow up and realizes how creep it is to just not find a female character that is remarkable for other skills than distracting the opponent - in fighting games, because RPG, Puzzle and other genres at least try to balance it a little. But hey, that's all for the gameplay. I'm not sure that I could explain it right. It's just my anguish about it. And I do hope that you can distinguish female beauty in games from pure, cheap sexism :)

There we have it folks, gay men have a strategic advantage over both straight male and female and lesbian gamers. In the top 10 of most used characters in DOA 5 only two are male (Hayabusa at 6 and Jann Lee at 8), so there seems to be a very little risk for gay players to be distracted by male characters.

Stefan B. nope you can still get an easy disadvantage for example if I play a sexy male character you could get the same loss as a girl because your tastes in men is similar to that of a woman and the same vice versa can be applied to women if they see a sexy female and even if you're asexual having no interest in men and women you could still get distracted because it might shudder you a little.

Maximo806 Well yes, but that's why I included the top of most used characters, since it clearly shows female characters are much more used than male ones, thus tipping the scales to the favour of gay players. So I guess lesbian gamers have it worse, they have worse response than men and at the same time get distracted by the boobies, while straight men though distracted still have better response (as Matt claimed). But I don't see why asexual players would "shudder". It's not like they feel revulsion and disgust towards either sex. They're just not aroused.

I think the gays are on the safe side there ... until a legend is born of an asexual player that kicks everyone's butts. At tournaments the top players (all gay of course) pat each others on the backs for easy victories as the doors open and from a blinding light enters a lone man/woman. Dusty coat, six-shooter, smoking a cigarillo. The music stops, all eyes on him/her as s/he says while lighting the cigarillo "I'm .... the asexual one ... where do I sign for the DOA 5 tournament?" Several ladies faint and a guy screams "I'm SO not doing this shit!" and jumps out the window. The tournament commences...

The female might have slower reaction time by default, but if what you say is true, women could compensate for this disadvantage by using sex appeal to distract their male opponents. I play BlazBlue with my husband and while we are ametuers, I can wipe the flor with him simply because I know him so well, and using characters like Litchi which I know will ...distract him :P

+BunnaySango I was going to point that out actually, by being sensitive to gender this organization in fact is being sexist. Female tournament players could use the sexuality to their advantage as an attractive female form would have little to no effect on them, ultimately by taking out the sexy costumes these organizers are negating the balancing female players could utilize thus leaving them at a disadvantage. and to be fair it's not the first time in history women have used sexuality to gain an advantage (female spies in during European revolutions) or just their use gender in general (the kunoichi hiding as maids to gather information since during the era nobody would regard a woman as a threat). So it would be par for the course, women know they have an effect on guys and know how to utilize it.

mk, I'm a female DOA player, been playing since Dead or Alive 2. Generally I pick 1. Kasumi 2. Ayane 3. Hitomi 4. Momiji 5. Honoka Personally, I don't really care about the whole 'over sexualized' themes, It doesn't bother me. In fact Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is one of my favourite games, it's really fun and enjoyable and I like overall game play involved. Same with Dead or Alive Last Round, I enjoy the game play and the challenge way too much. I can confidently say Dead Or Alive is one of my favourite game series franchises.
