Let's talk gamexplain. Nintendo added everything we asked for and more in to this game. They took away a few things that were charming at first in mm1 but then got old fast and that is really what you're basing your disappointment on? The only legitimate issues I see here are lack of costumes and possibly awkward controls for building since we don't have dual screens. And let's be honest here. They are going to make free patches for this and given the reactions from fans I'm willing to bet they will put them in later. I feel you guys got overhyped and then once Nintendo revealed everything to you in the direct it took away the "magic" of discovering it. This is a fantastic game that is going to get many gamers playing for hours.

This game should've been reviewed based on what this game is, not being compared to SMM1 for every single little thing. I'm glad Nintendo did things different. Besides, SMM1 wasn't that great at launch, it needed updates for features such as checkpoints and doors. Who knows what other amazing things SMM2 gets in the future? I felt this review was so incredibly biased and nitpicky. All the new players that never played SMM1 don't care if the title screen isn't the same as one, or the pipes aren't stackable. I'm sorry, I used to really enjoy your videos Gamexplain, but reviews like this just are a shame considering that a lot of new players might rethink buying this game because you held it to a certain standard that others don't share.

I get the criticism like mapping 2 different actions on the same button when the controller has enough buttons to compensate. On the other hand you talk one minute about the title screen and choose plenty of nitpicks. Granted, a lot of what you said are problems that really do exist (especially multiplayer online which seems to be a mess right now) but some of these nitpicks seem so small that they would not hit the game in the slightest. I really like that you share your experience, that is what I expect from a Review and you really show that you are an enthusiast but because of this it seems like you miss some points which really hurt your review. It's not wrong to mention problems, not at all. But this video seems to heavily target a core audience with a lot of playtime in SMM1 for the Wii U while leaving the newbies to the Super Mario Maker experience out of focus until the very end of the video.

I have 2 major issues with this review first, being weird isnt exactly a good thing, sometimes it takes people out of the experience more than pull them in. and for one i think you should've made it clear that being weird is a preference not a design flaw. i along with many others prefer the more grounded traditional approach not having to worry about silly things that no one will remember past the first time they ever encounter it. not saying its good they are gone but rather, it actually doesnt impact the game at all especially its presentation, the presentation should be solely judged on the interface and music and the ease of creation and gameplay. My hot take. Quality is more charming than uniqueness and weird isnt exactly amazing for uniqueness. the second is the restricted examples you mentioned. they dont feel like restrictions. since when has mario had even clear conditions and trying to compile more than 1 feels like it could easily be abuse and become a chaotic mess. imagine having to Kill Specifically 8 goomba's and also collect 10 coins while not jumping or something. Keeping it to one clear condition creates more concise ability to mold better more focused and fun stages. Also why would you want multiple angry suns diving at you. that sounds super unfun. now maybe there isnt as much options in clear conditions as you'd hope and yeah i can get with that, but the large variety that we got should be more than enough for tons of creative stages.

How does a new style being a "vacuum" chip away at the original's freedom? You can completely ignore it and still do just as much as the original gameplay wise and much more aside from 1 easter egg powerup. It's objectively more content. on UI: "Lack of any quality of life improvements" That's because you guys hate the scroll wheel and quick access menus because they don't offer "experimentation". For people who don't need controversial opinions for clicks, that's a huge improvement. "No sample stages", you always start from a "blank slate" Not true, it has sample stages, you just can't easily pick which one to test. And I would hope that a game about creation starts with a blank slate most of the time. Imagine only being allowed to draw in half finished coloring books and thinking that's better for creative use than blank papers. You complained about having to download courses for local play. Local play is meant to be played offline. You cannot choose levels online without going online. Offline play needs offline levels. You took issue with some mostly non-consequential content missing and super subjective opinions about how this didn't "resonate" with you. Rather than simply brushing these off as an opinion, you said it wouldn't matter because not many played as much Mario Maker as you, making it seem like the more you being more experienced than new players is what makes your opinion valid, rather than simply treating it as subjective as it is. It comes off as... condescending, yeah. "Mario Maker 2 *might* be the better game, it just wasn't the better experience for me" -sums up this review pretty well as well as your take on the whole game these past few weeks. People look to these reviews to try and get some objective information highlighted to see if a game is worth buying or no, but this goal is hindered by how much time you take to talk about very subjective opinions. You are judging it is Mario Maker Part 2 rather than Mario Maker 2, and this would make sense in an editorial about the now series as a whole, but this is a review and you should judge the game and the game alone. For instance, for criticisms, the clunky build mechanics when docked, that is subjective, but based in logical argument that it is objectively slower to move and requires a lot ore input than a touch screen. If nobody played MM1, this would still work as a criticism of this game. Not being able to touch letters in the title screen. So? Can you really argue that you played SMM1 a lot if apparently you were spending a great deal of time looking at the title? If someone did not play MM1, this argument makes 0 sense. Overall, 7/10: great game, mediocre at best review
@Vereid5 жыл бұрын
Your review of their review is better than their review. Seriously, agree with everything you said. Besides the true magic of this game will be when the community (people like Ceave, Super Expert Streamers, Kaizo levels etc) gets ahold of it. Great game from the tiny bit I played.
@kaizo555 жыл бұрын
You're right! But about the docked mode editing: I had the 3ds version, so it might be slower, but I'm looking forward to build levels on the big screen. Also, I like the item wheels better. I always thought that the item selection screen was chaos and it would be better to have a categorised screen. Yep, it's my opinion, everyone has a different opinion, you may like it or hate it. It looks fresh for me, even if they took out the easter eggs. The easter eggs were just minor things, no huge gameplay elements. And about the templates:if you ran out of ideas, just check Yamamura's dojo. No reason to get salty, fellow makers. Keep Calm, Love Mario!!
@SarajevoKyoto5 жыл бұрын
I agree with this assessment, he really got bogged down a lot in nitpicks that all boiled down to, "I have to learn a slightly different system than I got used to in SMM1, so I hate it". The quirky start-up screen is cute, and I do kinda wish this game had that, but that's window-dressing compared to the massive amount of new content available for level creation, and Nintendo Life was able to get TV mode editing down pretty smoothly without grumping about it. I play mostly handheld, so I'm definitely looking for a stylus, but I'm just so excited for all the NEW stuff coming that I really don't care about these nitpicks that he keeps going on and on about.

He's right and the core players know it, I don't have time to read your entire rant, his points are valid though. No fill is a giant fucking problem No samples is a giant fucking problem. Also no game engine only has blank slates, that's ridiculous. Samples and snippets help you finish faster Bad online is a giant fucking problem. No 100 man is a giant fucking problem. If they had the new items in 3D world, then the retro styles would be used less. Also, unlike the retro styles, the 3D theme doesn’t just add physics to flat images, it adds in a whole new engine, and it looks great. If they just used images but were compatible, it wouldn’t look as good.
@Namajaff5 жыл бұрын
the original Mario theme is (objectively) the ugliest and the most restrictive theme in the game, but people still make tons of levels with it. by far the dumbest thing in the new game is the 3D world theme, its just dumb. I'm sure that it's gonna be great tho
@BigFearedBalloon5 жыл бұрын
Well the retro styles in Super Mario Maker also had pretty much the exact same things between them and they were all still used. I think the main problem here is effort where stuff from the Retro Styles should be possible.... and so should the new stuff from 3D World. Apart from anything related to the 3D Mechanics (Like Banzai Bill Cannons, Bowser etc.) Nearly every mechanic should be possible. For example, Beat Blocks. That is just the On/Off Switch. How hard would that be to add to the other 4 styles. Ants? They are Spike Tops that can be jumped on. Piranha Creepers? Similar to how you make the Snake Block. 2x2 Moving Block isn't that hard, Warp Block would be simple but amazing in other styles, ! Block would be different in use for Pixel Styles since you can't ground pound them. Crates are POW Blocks that Float, Bullies are just the Bouncy Tubes that just move, Skipsqueak is just a enemy that jumps when Mario Jump. etc. etc. I just feel like it's possible to include every element. Instead it's locked to a whole different theme, with how difficult I imagine it will be using it, and just feels like lack of polish happened there. All the 3D World style needed to be different were the 3D Mechanics, Cat Mario and how it looked. That's it. Nothing different from the 4 other styles. It just feels like it should be reasonably possible and they didn't go the full mile to do it alongside not adding all the old elements to the 3D World Style... just ends up being disappointing for no real good reason.

@MacaroniMailbox The copying aspect is really minor, but it does waste a button. Basic "quality of life" stuff. As for picking a theme, sure, people pick a theme first generally. But not all of us remember which items and enemies are locked to specific game styles. So it's going to really suck when we craft half a stage thinking we can introduce a new concept in the latter half only to find out we can't. The information in the reviews is almost always solid but most of the time, whoever reviews the game makes it clear in their review that the score is their own personal enjoyment of the game. A lot of the things Andre was frustrated with in this review would not bother me at all, but then again I didn't play the original religiously. Personal enjoyment does not always equal quality and this review made it clear that the quality of the product is there even if enjoyment-wise it was a like vs a love.

I mean, people are still complaining (and tbh, I think it's mostly well-founded, if overly rude), but at least in this case it's generally directed at the substance of the review, and not just the conclusion, like can be seen with negative reviews on so many other channels with a numerical verdict.

You can pick and choose from the review if things are important to you or not and make your own decision on whether or not to pick it up. Clearly, you are going to pick this game up anyway so I don't see why you're watching a review of it tbh

I don’t understand all the nitpicky comments... He literally says he likes the game, but lists his critiques. Is he not allowed to be annoyed at some of the changes they have? It’s a review, and he’s simply telling consumers what to expect, especially if they enjoyed the creating side of the first game.

Max Andrew Max Andrew I see your point, but he only spent like a minute towards the end of the video talking about it, and even then he admits that those features aren’t at all essential (they just added to a quirkiness he enjoyed in the first game).

Yeah, I did not like this review. Although you make it very clear that this is only your experience as an experienced mario maker player, it generally felt like 50% of this review is just small nitpicks that I couldn't care less about as a fresh mario maker player. Next time make someone else review the game if there are only going to be nitpicks like this.. Because I'm sooo hyped, and I know I'm going to absolutely love this game.
@anterax40975 жыл бұрын
You’re implying that a fresh Mario Maker player should have reviewed it? ... Are you kidding me? Despite the original being on the unpopular WiiU, it also released on the massively successful 3DS. You add in all the KZbin and Twitch streamers who gained fame for showcasing the game and you have a very large, passionate community that expects great things from a sequel to, what I consider, WiiU’s killer app. Nintendo did a tremendous job adding all these extra features but the execution of all that, from the creator side, is kind of sloppy. It’s great you can now dream up 3D World stages, it’s not so great that so many elements of what makes Mario Maker tick, just aren’t present there. I’m especially surprised about the lack of tracks and grinders; those’re so important to making varied challenges, especially Athletic type, moving stages.

Wow. Only a "Liked" huh? I'm surprised he griped so much about it but then again he had high expectations for this one because he loved the first one so much. I'm not sure why they are doing what they are doing with multiplayer. That would be one of my gripes too. You should be able to search levels and by name and type etc. You should be able to tag your level as multiplayer or not as one of the types of levels.
@Jof-5 жыл бұрын
The worst thing is that there are Multiplayer Vs/Co-op tags already, Nintendo just doesn’t use them

Jo0f 932-2 Nintendo seriously needs to get up with the times. Not to say Smash is a better and, but they somehow did the social features of this game so right even though it’s such a minor part. Instead of putting in a Nintendo code, just let us search by name. Like they got search features right with one game, but not with another? Like c’mon man?
@aKoolAidMan5 жыл бұрын
1. You CAN search by level type. 2. You CAN flag a level as multiplayer friendly. 3. Do you realize how impossible title searching would be. With the monumental amount of levels, getting the one you want would be insane. The only time it would work is when the title is EXTREMELY unique, for other levels, it doesn’t work. It would be a faulty feature.

I'm just gonna list all my (admittedly minor) reservations with this game based on all the footage I've seen: 1. Why can't I stack enemies in the 3D World style, when that game was chock full of enemy towers? 2. I'm glad we're now able to place water in non-underwater levels, but why is that exclusive to the jungle theme? Why can't I remove the water completely? And furthermore, why can't I place any liquid in any level theme? It sounds like such a no-brainer feature that they randomly chose not to add. And yes, I know it would defy logic, but since when do Mario games ever apply real-world logic? 3. Why are Fire Bros. and Porcupuffers exclusive to 3D World when they've been in the series since Mario 3 and World respectively? 4. Why is red the only available alternate color for Yoshi? 5. Why are we still confined to just one exclusive power-up from each game? I would've loved to see the Frog Suit, Boomerang Flower, and Super Acorn make an appearance here. Hell, maybe they could've added the Ice Flower as a new power-up for all styles. 6. Why do we still not have the Koopalings?! 7. Why isn't the Night feature available in 3D World, when that game had day and night versions of the same level tropes. The fact that the ice levels aren't set at night in MM2 is very suspicious. 8. Adding onto #7, why can't I just use the night aesthetics instead of being forced to use the gimmicks?

Honestly, the lack of amiibo costumes is a massive turnoff for me. At that point there’s pretty much no reason to use styles beyond NSMBU and SM3DW thanks to their more restrictive movesets.
@JTread20035 жыл бұрын
One thing I don't understand is why they didn't have motion control as an option when creating a level. The switch can clearly have a pointer like the Wii, and it would make it much easier. Otherwise, this game looks great and I really can't wait to get it!
