Her rant about people liking good graphics in their video games kinda perplexes me. Yes god forbid the visuals in a visual medium look good. Ever noticed how most of the best movies and tv shows of all time tend to have really good cinematography, most of the best comics and manga tend to have really good art, most of the best video games have really good graphics for their time and/or cool art style because generally people want the things they're looking at to look good, I know what a novel fucking concept. If you applied this to anything else it would instantly fall apart "Why do you guys care about the special effects and cinematography in movies? Just go look at paintings or read a book"

No, not all video games are political. Like, how is Tetris political? And when games are political, it's mostly for world building. For example, Dragon's Age. Each faction has different customs, such as the Elves either living in the woods or slums. Whoever thinks that all video games are political, their point is irrelevant.

Okay but most games are somewhat political, even the simplest concepts. Im just saying people will use the "not political" argument against somthing that has politics. Ye tetris doesn't have politics but thats literally because its stacking squares. Even then though you can state the background of tetris and its multiple developments as being political. Most games are political because they are more than simple commands. And yes that means the tiniest piece of text can label a game as political because its still expressing some form of idea at the end of the day, because thats just reality. When people say video games are political, its paraphrasing those ideas.

The example I’ve always shown people for why Ultra HD/Realistic Graphics =/= Great Game by default is 2006’s Okami on the PS2 (and later in 2008 on the Wii!) - timeless art style - cel-shaded graphics with a storybook quality to them - STILL EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL BY “TODAY’S (pitifully low) STANDARDS” - 480i/480p Alone, that would outclass it compared to the overpolished Genre Blenders w/ Ultra-HD 1080p/4k/8k graphics we get from AAA Publishers…but then you factor in how it has: - a lovely story that remixes Japanese Folklore w/ some contemporary touches - Legend of Zelda style gameplay that does plenty to distinguish itself from most LoZ titles (particularly Twilight Princess which has some features that Okami has as well) - wonderful messages about being kind to others + nature since it listens and reciprocates in kind; new technologies come with new responsibilities that require serious commitment to avoid it being turned against us; the stars bear gifts we must be ready as a species to receive (or prepare against) - a tidy gameplay loop that rewards fast & loose combat & dodging while using everything at your disposal - a then-novel gameplay feature that utilizes art to defend & go on the offensive with via beautiful brush strokes! …and plenty extra. One other big thing worth noting is how it’s very beginner-friendly and serves as an EXCELLENT “gateway drug” into gaming while being casual yet deep all at once. While I get the appeal of games being more geared towards people who actually play them, we must never lose sight of how the hobby itself sustained itself for so long: approachability!
