Top Spin 2K25 Review - The Final Verdict

The long-dormant Top Spin franchise is back with TopSpin 2K25 with a more modern approach to the amount of content the game features. Much like other 2K Sports offerings, TopSpin 2K25 offers a varied roster, as well as an excellent career mode that is filled to the brim with interesting content and a light RPG system that lets you improve your custom tennis player on their way to stardom.
While playing TopSpin 2K25 is quite a bit of fun, the game still offers a fair bit of frustration with some of its more complex mechanics. Despite a fantastic tutorial mode, the game’s control scheme makes it frustrating to pick between precision and power shots, and at higher difficulties, your athletes might even just give up on a shot that they could have easily made. These frustrations do little to take away from just how much fun playing TopSpin 2K25 can be, however.

So, I deactivated all the bars and visual indicators. And then, you no longer concentrate on a gauge bar, you just look at the ball, your player and when to hit it like on a real court... it's 100x more enjoyable. Your timings are less good at first, but little by little everything becomes more logical and fluid, you hit the ball better and better while having more fun. Online, there should be a mode where all visual aids are deactivated, to have real tennis game, with human imperfections.

I did this but still you can’t for eg hit the ball directly into a corner. It’s all very ‘scripted’. The rally’s all the same. Really awful game I am so disappointed. Best I’ve played was actually would you believe - Gameboy top ranking tennis.

I think it would be great if they added a "download players" option to this game. That way, we could download players created by the community. Playing a tennis game without the full roster is like playing a football game without Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, etc. The roster definitely needs to be improved.

Moment-to-moment gameplay on the court is still better than any other tennis game, I agree. The career mode needs a massive update though to be more like real world tennis and not the silly 1 tournament per month system that they just copy-pasted from Topspin 4. They have all of the licenses to the Masters 1000 tournaments and the Slams. They need to put them to better use.

Gameplay is excellent I have taken off all the energy bars and where the ball is going to land etc to make it more realistic yes more difficult but still great fun the graphics are good well featured looking tennis stadiums, arenas character models could be better , but not the worst I have seen in a game, sounds are excellent, yes my career mode could be better but not worse career mode in sport games , overall I am loving the new top spin game

I bought it and I wasted 74 EUR - a colossal disappointment to me. For a casual match using exhibition is kind of ok, but my Carrer is simply abysmal. The player improvements are so slow that you have to play countless frustrating matches with a player who runs like a 60years old out of practice and sends 90% of shots right towards the opponent with negligible aim. Plus, compared to Top Spin 4, you also have the stroke of genius, the energy meter, which basically force you to skip one tournament every two months. Why is that ? well obviously so that you hurry to the game store and buy their player improvement packets, ranging from 4.99 to 99 EUR. 2K is really getting shameless in ripping their clients. Control wise it is quite identical to Top Spin 4, with the very same defects: timing is way too important, it gets precedence over everything else, including tactics; volleying is a joke, to get a winning volley you have to hit the button before the opponent has even started to hit the ball. And matches seems rigged: the opponents play dumb for some time and let you win some points, then all of a sudden they start playing with incredible speed and hitting angles that are forbidden to you as a player. Compared to Top Spin 4, Top Spin 2k25 is also heavily dependant on 2k servers; if the servers are off-line, you are left with just exhibition - even a local my carrier requires 2k server. That means when 2k will pull the plug on the servers, this game will be useless. This is the last 2k games I buy, I really had enough.

I bought the game and I really like it! It’s not perfect in ambience as NBA2K, but it’s very fun! The only big issue to me are the grunts. They are generic and shared among players. Which means, you will hear Badosa grunting the same way Swiatek does. Attention to details was the only drawback I saw so far

I've played Top Spin 4 on PS3 for years. I even played until this day. So ofcourse I immediately bought Top Spin 2k25 and I have to say I find it really good. It feels solid, it sounds really good. The gameplay is so smooth! It takes a while to get used to but I think it could be really interesting when you master it. I feel like its an upgraded top spin 4 really. Graphic wise there is not much good to say about it but when it comes to actually playing points the graphics are not as important anymore and it looks quite okay to me. Downside are there are not many active players to choose from. I would've loved to play with Zverev, Nadal, Dimitriov, Rublev and also Wawrinka. Also the gruting sounds are not very accurate and they are too frequent in my opinion. I have to explore the game modes but overall I'm happy with this new tennis game. First game I've bought in ages.

The timing meter is a horrible idea you end up just staring at the meter the entire time instead of actually enjoying the game. And the movement is so much more clunky.
