I think an important factor you forgot to mention is that Waltz was genuinely liked by the kids. Letters found in X13 reveal that he was really nice, and kids loved him. Even in the flashback in the game ending its revealed that Aiden had made the promise to come back to Waltz, not Mia

If the GRE had managed to remove the side effects of inhibitors it would've functionally been a cure, if even one facility was in villedor was able to produce inhibitors that didn't have side effects the survivors could just kill all the infected and since the virus isn't transmitted through childbirth the newer generations would be able to not have to worry about turning

Technically all a inhibitor is, is the actual haran virus and antizen. I'm assuming the super human traits like speed, agility and strength come from the virus as we see people can become enhanced by it in the case or Virals and especially volatiles. So the increased aggression and personality traits like that must also be from the virus half of the mix. The antizen half of the mix must be to just try and keep you from fully turning into some mindless zombie. Letting you keep the physical benefits of the virus but also keep your mind. So if fully working no side effect inhibs we're made then you'd have a entire city of basically superhumans. One thing I don't get is why it seems the night runners could take the inhibs and no have those turning moments Aiden does

With Aiden he took em 3 at a time with the only wait between doses being how long it took for him to get more, so he had massive dosages fairly often. Whilst the night runners likely only took 1 at a time and likely not every single night.

@@isaacturner197 that's a good point. I haven't played the game in a while by now so I can't exactly recall how much dosage of inhibitors Aiden took at once. Maybe his exposure to them as a child by waltz just made him better able to take more of them with less of a chance of dying. Maybe Aiden would need a mix with more antizen as his zombie Aiden moments show the virus is clearly overpowering the antizen Maybe that's also to do with him taking more. But we need a cannonical take on it from the game, how much does Aiden take and how frequently does he take them in proper cannon, because in game you can literally just zip from one to another, that's what I did so my Aiden should either by straight up dead or a Aiden zombie. It's a cool discussion either way though I love the more scientific parts of these things when games introduce viruses that enhance a select few but turn most into mindless zombies. Makes you think if a enhancement virus like that exists in our real world and who has the genetics to purely benefit from that virus and become a superhuman

6:16 he doesnt open x13, he activates the factories solar panels. The factory has ben retrofitted with theses solar panels to help the military against the virus. For some reason they have been disabled. And Waltz turns them back on. Giving electricity to the enitre city, including x13

I wish they added a unique story path if you decided not to collect inhibitors (sort of an ultra hard mode), but sadly I guess that would change too much of the plot, still a cool concept.

Waltz is sadly a big casualty of the rewrites that undermined DL2's narrative. He had to get "back" to X13, but somehow was able to keep Mia alive somewhere in the city prior to returning to that facility? He had to let the missiles destroy Villador because...It would somehow save Mia? What? He needed X13 to do...What exactly? Hook her up to life support? She apparently already had it and managed to survive the whole trip there without it. He experimented on kids, and the children seemingly went with their parent's blessing, but maybe not, because they went missing? Did no parent realise there was a mass exodus of missing children and I dunno...Investigate? It's heavily implied that Waltz created Inhibitors, but somehow even after years of research, he saw zero success with them as a cure and they seemed to instead prolong the infection stages and eventually lead to what we saw in The Following (a Volatile human, hybrid, this is what Aiden, Waltz and Crane have now become, Crane possibly didn't survive after however). Nightrunners have been dosing on Inhibitors for ages, but show no signs of actual infection side-effects. Why did Aiden start to turn if the only difference was that he got given them as a child, as opposed to say; Hakon who used them in the Military. Don't even get me started on how Aiden travelled so far outside of Villador, survived AND thrived long enough to return, rememvering his "sister" but not the huge facility he escaped singlehandedly.

@@takoshihitsamaru4675 I'm not going to lie but I honestly don't remember but I do know the answers to some of you lr question for example why Aiden was just now showing since from the inhibitors most likely due to the volitile bit which got him effected the inhibitors also acted like antizen which suppressed the virus but constant use effected the way the volitile virus tried taking control you can also see this when he starts releasing adrenaline which the virus is know to control to make the user stronger and faster to infect others

At the car factory it was made a viable option that Mia was Waltz's daughter, and at that moment i figured that Waltz was also Aidens father. I don't think Mia was experimented upon, more of she got the virus and Waltz want to cure her so badly. Also some of the voice mails left in the phones gives more hint of where GRE got the kids. There was at least one kid that got virus early symptoms (high fever), GRE took a blood test of the child, and a day or something later the child gone missing.

The thing that felt silly and out of place to me was like the force abilities that waltz had in the boss fight. The experiments only ever showed people becoming faster, stronger, larger, etc. but never being able to like cause shockwaves of what looked like actual electricity and what not

Let me explain something to you before you buy it, the story still isn't the main focus of the dying light franciase but it's greatly improved in dying light 2, the main focus is the gameplay and it's just amazing tbh, I'm guessing you only care about gameplay since spoilers don't bother you .

It's most likely a watered-down version of it since it doesn't make you into a volatile but a viral granted most instances where that affect happens you have control over it until you black out which means it's better than having the restriction of have to say in the UV otherwise you become a mindless zombie so from that standpoint yes it worked and is successful and as long as you're uninfected it would work wonders with you but from what I've seen in my experience in the game it's the combination of recently turned okay being bitten by the volatile then getting the cocktails enhancers towards the zombie mode

She got “sick” because she got the infection… he was experimenting on kids because they had a higher tolerance to the virus. The sacrifice of a few to save the many - ever heard that quote? He wasn’t trying to harm them; he was “experimenting” on them all whilst trying to keep them safe. Play the game - it clearly shows how angry he gets that the kids were forced to the streets/how he wasn’t trying to harm them. It even says it in the collectibles you find throughout the game. So no, he’s *NOT* as “terrible” as you proclaim, man…..

plot twist, Waltz is behind the sentient volatile on DLC for DL1. Which gave Kyle Crane the same stuff. We never fully kill Waltz at end of DL2. So what if when we get the Elysium DLC we run into Waltz and volatile Crane? Over the loss of Mia, Waltz goes crazy and finds what he needs in Crane's blood and starts to build an army. Etc

You missed out one important factor Waltz , aiden. And Mia, are all related. Waltz is aidens father he forgets that, he also forgets that Waltz only started the experiments to save his daughter. That’s why waltz at the beginning says “aiden your the only one who can save her” waltz the entire time was trying to save his family. Aiden was a key factor to make that possible but he ran away. There’s a scene where waltz tells Aiden to run. That’s when there being attacked. And Aiden runs away leaving waltz with his daughter. When you play the game and pay attention to the voice lines it’s all makes sense. Waltz takes the key realizes that you are Aiden. (Aka his son) and when your fighting him and kill him. He then calls you your son, and asks for you to do the right thing. In the end of that play through Aiden looses his whole family and leaves the city with hakkon. The only other person in the game who could understand how Aiden feels. Hope you read this.

My biggest question...why would Waltz be unable to stop the missiles? I mean, once he is literally inside X13 he has everything he needs/wants. Even if disabling the missiles would cut off the power to the place or lock the doors, it should all still be open and the supplies/equipment free for the taking if not simply trapping him and Mia inside (like he apparently wanted anyways). Dude is also already capable of fighting/killing volatiles solo, so if need be he could even haul all the stuff outside to his men on his own. Then he could just setup his own fortress/lab/etc. in the city with the power grid restored. What was his longterm plan otherwise? Level the city and just live out his days in the bunker...doing what? He'd destroy all the walls/buildings and flood the city/area with infected who just come and go. Like I get his entire plan is "Save my Daughter". But...how? And did he really just imagine she'd be cool with living her entire life trapped in a bunker? Wouldn't curing/saving her LITERALLY be the cure for the virus overall, and wouldn't that in a roundabout way allow him to accomplish his original goal of saving humanity and creating a vaccine? Like as brilliant as this guy supposedly is, his plan makes no sense beyond "Open the bunker, get inside, slap daughter into a ventilator". And even then, if she was already that weak in the first place, we have to assume he already had her on functional life-support equipment anyways (meaning he could've just left her somewhere else safely and not had to drag her down to X13). So AGAIN, what was his plan in the end? Even if he needed to just bring in 100 guys with equipment and slowly cut-through all the blast-doors of the place over several months, once he knew where X13 was and the city had power, he already had the manpower/tools to do so.

(Felt this was more tacked-on complaining, so I didn't include it in the original comment) My second issue, is the fact that the writers also half-assed so much of the story in other areas by constantly pulling the exact same trope over and over again. Like introducing us to characters for a single quest, trying to get us emotionally invested in them, and then immediately killing them off. After the dudes in the VNC tower I genuinely didn't care anymore. It happens multiple times where they just exposition-dump these characters and stories onto us as if it should matter, then again...IMMEDIATELY kill them off. What was the point? Why even bother wasting my time with any of it? They could've been nameless NPCs I meet in the open world at that point. The first time they pulled it with Anderson (that black female PK officer that if you follow the PK path will inadvertently sacrifice herself for you), it was like "Okay, that sucks, seemed like a interesting character who could've had a bigger role". But by the VNC Tower where they cram you into 2 cutscenes with a bunch of dudes that you get introduced to, then instantly kill them all...it's like they could've just removed those cutscenes and literally nothing would've changed storywise.

@@sgg3586 that is the story though, you get to meet and talk to Rowe for about an hour of gameplay before you would enter the vnc, you understand his motivations, and a bit of bad blood between him and Jack Matt. Next thing you know Jack mercilessly sends a recon team up the tower that is pretty obviously too small a force to deal with the amount of volatiles in the building. Now you understand a bit more of Jack's morality and motives- you learn he is basically a murderer. I think that is a good way to characterize significant leaders in the story as well as world build a little bit and lend some legitimacy to the story. It is emotionally straining to learn about these new characters only for them to die, but thats what makes the world believable, not every named character will live. The world really is a harsh uninhabitable and merciless place at this point. Might be a pretty simple tactic the writers used but the fact it worked on you means they did a good job. It would only be a bad job if you never even cared about those characters after you learn a bit about them and see them die.

The missile strike are a fail safe protocol once x13 is opened again due to 11 years ago THV leak out into the city and the city was shortly crowded with infected so the GRE and the military design this method as a procedure to ensure no infected can enter x13 and spread the virus inside it but in fact the virus was leaked out from gre lab inside x13 and they have to seal off x13

To address both concerns I will start with your second issue. If you do a lot of sidequesting and make certain game impacting decisions you will uncover a lot of law and information on players for several hours of gameplay before they are killed off. If you just rush through it all they seem like meaningless NPC's that do not matter. As per the main issue, (from my understanding) Waltz had only two options, lose the town or lose his daughter. He needed the technology of the X13 facility which had its emergency launch protocol activated meaning to shut it down you had to depower the whole facility. He was unwilling to sacrifice his daughter so he kept the power on, which would launch the nukes. He does not have override authority of the missiles in the facility, no one alive does. The Butcher stopped the previous strikes by ensuring facilities remained unpowered. To power X13 and stop the nukes you have to destroy them, which would destroy the facility. Waltz was torn between saving his daughter and saving the city, there was no possible way for anyone to accomplish both.

the whole thing was fucking stupid waltz could have easily ran the city. He could have turned off the missiles in x13 and been clandestinely giving the surviors etc food and resources from x13 they would go nuts having access to high quality resources like that. He wouldnt have to worry about the pk or renagades as he had them going to war with eachother so that problem would have sorted itself out. Plus he could continue his tests in peace as nobody besides aiden would know of x13 and hakons related with lawan he could have easily convinced her to stay by his side too, especially after the revelation that aiden and others volunteered for the experiment. Theres a myrid of ways to disable missiles so he could have easily overrided the system and boom done. Plus with a intact city if he needed more test subjects he could easily get them. He had renegades easily line up for enhacements he could get the already down trodden peasents and abandonded children to come along with glee and have no more issues Mia would be alive Aiden being the tool he is would be at his side after being reunited with his "sister' He already didnt want to fight waltz at the end or kill him so he obviously had a soft spot the guy is basically Aiden's dad. Plus Waltz had a connection to him aswell when they first met and he got the key before lawan shot him he softened alot and was like omg aiden its you you are alive where have you been, he got half way through that before being interrupted aiden was dumb for running away because if someone responds to you like that obviously you had some good history

Then discovered that 1. he was killing the kids, 2. he was close to a cure. and later on 3. he could make supersoldiers as a biproduct of his research and experiments as he came closer to a cure, a cure which basically does a more successful version of Dying Light 1's end DLC cult, where they have sentient volatiles.

Could be that he respected him enough, and essentially adopted him as his own child throughout experiments. Could be a mere reference to their age gap. Maybe its a mix of both. All I know is that the ending of the game, much like Dying Light 1, was quite an emotionally painful experience where I did not enjoy the outcomes we had on offer. That and the fact I messed up and didnt kill the butcher to drain the sunken city forcing me to restart the game where i made further mistakes midgame forcing me to restart yet again.

They are a failsafe in an attempt to prevent the virus spreading. It may not seem like it makes sense, however the intent is that one of the other cities may have developed a cure, and destroying an infected city would prevent cured survivors from unleashing a horde of infected. Essentially the premise is the missile failsafe exists on the idea that one of the other cities develops a cure, which none of them did.

No, Waltz just uses the word Son for him as a sort of term of affection/sort of derogatory statement, he does care about Aiden, largely due to how successful Aiden was during Waltz research, but he also see's him as immature and naive at least from Waltz perspective. Though that's just my assessment, could be that in a future DLC that all turns out to be completely wrong.

@@prod.Sp0tSid3 Im almost positive Aiden was so close with Mia he remembered her as his sister when she was just his best friend. He was 5 when he was dxperimented on and like 8 when he escaped. So much trauma made his memories foggy and outright wrong in some cases (like Waltz being this mad psycho) so its not a stretch to think he remembered Mia wrong as well

No, so from dialogue and how they communicate with each other, Waltz is the father of Mia, and Aiden is the childhood friend/ crush. Waltz respects and acknowledges Aiden (biggest clues are in X13 where Waltz says he gets what Mia saw in Aiden, basically saying Aiden is not family, and that Mia had a crush on Aiden) essentially treating him as a surrogate son. It is understandable that a lot of people misunderstood the information, as at the X13 facility they bombard players with an information overload, confirming alot of information and details while also confusing players.
