Gaming Pastime reviews Twisted Metal III for the PlayStation. Considered to be one of the worst games in the series, it has problems, but calling it the worst is a bit extreme.
Twisted Metal III was developed and published by 989 Studios, released in October, 1998 (NA). Despite the hate this game gets, it still managed to achieve the "Greastest Hits" status later on. One could say Twisted Metal III is a rehash of Twisted Metal 2.

I think most people blame 989 studios for 'ruining' the Twisted Metal series even series creator David Jaffe admits that 989 didn't fully understand the world of Twisted Metal, at least according to my knowledge.

Thanks for the review of this, at the time of the review, 19-yr-old game! :) Yeah, it was pretty hammered on at the time, but it sold amazingly well, and it's crazy we got the game out the door in 10.5 months without having had access to the original source code and art. "The amount of opponents that spawn in increases as you progress through the stages. I don’t really have a problem with it but I just don’t understand the reason for this. Maybe it was to help keep a solid frame rate but it just seems odd and unexpected when it first happens." - Yes, we did this for framerate reasons. It may have even been my idea, but I was the one to implement it. I was bummed we couldn't have all the cars at once. "One of the bigger problems I had with the first two games was the AI. AI opponents only seemed to go after you and would never kill each other intentionally." - In the first two games, the AI had no knowledge of each other and only attacked each other coincidentally if/when they were on the same AI path. "There’s absolutely nothing negative about the deathmatch mode and I really wish these kinds of options returned in future games when David Jaffe was directing the series again." - I was the one that implemented deathmatch mode (among other things), and many of those options were heavily influenced by deathmatch playing on our team of games like Quake 2.

@@Gamingpastime64 Hah, I agree. The AI was definitely innovative for that time in this genre. I would love to re-master TM3, especially at least bringing in some of the rendering tech I developed for TM4. TM4's graphics enhancements with TM3's overall play/feel would be a combo I'd love to try, maybe adding in the physics changes in TM4 to reduce the flipping over issues.

I lost a lot of respect for Jaffe after he headed TM2012 with a helicopter, racing, 3 characters for 12 vehicles, and 6 vehicles having the same special in a Twisted Metal game. TM3 is more of a TM game than TM2012 ever will be.

Very well done review. I grew up on TM1 and 2 and I like 3 way more than either of them and always have. I remember whenever TM2012 was coming out and I was fooling around on the internet trying to figure out a release date and I first discovered the hatred a lot of gamers had for 3 and was in absolute disbelief. 3 got so many things right and better than 2 or 1 ever did. They had a bunch of diverse specials including my favorite in the entire series of Club Kid, they had a lot of varied maps including two of my favorite (LA and London), they got the cartoony comic book feel which I much prefer to the overly violent and real life cut scenes Jaffe loves to spit out, the AI had the perfect balance of focusing on you but more than willing to fight eachother so it actually felt like you made it out of a every man for themselves dog fight rather than the newer game where you just feel pissed off because it's everyone vs you. I could go on buy life is short so I will end with this Black > 3 > Head On > 2012> 4 > 2 > 1.

left right down, left right down, left right down ^_^ It's amazing how much fun some multiple specials can be. I remember making a chart to see what the damage ratings were like for all of the characters. If TM3 is your favourite, one of the most useful tricks in the game is to enter the jump command when moving off a ramp to increase your range instead of waste turbo. Outlaw was my favourite. Zapping people into the sky or just draining their health really fast was fun. Oh, and Club Kid. The Pull on that move was especially fun like in Calypso's blimp on the second level. It was enough to pull people up. That or cause a small little black hole full of fire and pullet damage in the corner. I think I'll go play that tonight now.

It's because of this game that I checked out Pitchshifter. They are a band that has drastically changed their sound. I highly suggest checking out their first two albums which are the epitome of Industrial Metal. From there, some band members shifted around and they changed their sound to what you hear in this game; a more Techno-Punk sound.

TM2 and TM3 are my favorites of the series and I've played both for so many hours when I was a teen. They are very different games though. I liked the stories and presentation on TM2 more, the soundtrack was awesome and each stage had a very memorable music to it (did not care for Rob Zombie soundtrack in TM3). The stages were awesome! I like TM3 stages too, but TM2's were better. I like TM3's physics though, I like that the cars leave tracks on the ground and when you hit them with a weapon the power of the impact makes them slide on the ground (Primeval's special was especially good at that). Some cars got really improved, for example Outlaw; if you had multiple specials, you could engage all the electric shocks at once, bouncing all the cars you'd come into contact with high up in the air and sometimes killing them instantly. Clubkid was great! I like the car designs too. Minion looks great. Primeval was an awesome boss, what I liked about Primeval was that he was actually normal sized, not something huge and ridiculous like Darktooth. And his special weapon was awesome! But the thing is, I like TM2 physics. Overall, I love both games, they are distinct and great in their own way.

The problem with TM3 is that it felt incomplete because 2 bosses were unplayable, the story and endings lacked content and explanation. TM4 is an improvement on characters, story, content, and story but not perfect. TM4 should had a story behind the bosses more. TM3 had the best gameplay to me.

This is definitely one of the best games in the series. Probably my second favorite after TM2. TW3 looks far better than the two previous games, it uses an actual physics engine (for the first time), the level designs are really good and the gameplay itself is great. P.S. All those people saying they play Twisted Metal for the stories seriously need to get out more.

Honestly, my only real problem with Twisted Metal III is the fact that you have some pretty impressive graphics for the cutscenes(not that I minded the cool, if not cheesy comic bookish cutscenes from the second game) for the time yet the character designs looked way too cartoony and each ending is a really unsatisfying two-second joke. Especially since you have to beat the whole game with each character to see a two second joke(at least before the advent of KZbin) Granted, from what I heard David Gaffe say(I think that's his name) he said they had a very limited time to make this game and with that considered, this game is kind of impressive.

A solid profile on the game, as an older gamer & fan of the series since it's launch I bought "Twisted Metal 3" the day it came out, I think reflecting back on it I was vastly disappointed with the graphics (favorite cars being so different & lackluster looking power-ups) compared to SingleTrac's 2 previous games & quickly gave the game away after only one sitting with it, I played & beat both games on Hard with the previous games & all the vehicles. Since then I've recently picked "TM3" up again & will look for the 4th game as well, I suppose as a kid & being it was your first game in the series you built an affection for this 3rd one, it's all naturally relative to the gamer & where they were at the time, I was 32 years old when the first "Twisted Metal" came out.

This may be David Jaffe’s and the fanbase’s least favorite Twisted Metal game, but it’s still a good game. In the storyline they kept the driver of Warthog, Mr.Grimm (until the 4th game) and Minion (sort of) consistent. Darkside’s driver Mr.Ash never had an alliance with Calypso, Marcus Kane is a criminally insane homeless man, Axel’s story never occurred, drivers of Outlaw now no longer want to put an end to Calypso’s evil doings, Needles Kane is supposed to be a serial killer (you think he’d want candy and ice cream!?) and Minion would want to take Calypso first before returning to hell. This is non-canon.

Twisted Metal 3 is hard to look at. Even in 1998 the reason this game is so hated is the developers missed the style and creativity of the second game. Best example is the story and cutsecnes. The one thing I hated about tm3 is that taller vehicles like sweet tooth and darkside have a tendency to flip over a lot. Some of the reworked specials I really loved. Such as the exploding sweet tooth head, which a direct hit, you can get maximum damage. Thumper’s reworked special, I also really like. The one I don’t like is Roadkill’s reworked special. Since it’s a slightly more powerful motar weapon. Not to mention Hammerhead’s ramming special I can’t get behind. The one that I’d considered op when you spam the rear attack is Outlaw’s Omni Tazer. If you have enough specials, you can hit a vehicle and make it fly high enough in the sky for an instant kill.

In the very first Twisted Metal, Hammerhead was one of the best vehicles if not the best and his sound he made when he used his monster crusher special was so awesome!! In Twisted Metal 2, Hammerhead is now one of the worst vehicles in the game. So he went from being the best in the previous game to basically the worst. In Twisted Metal 3, they made Hammerhead a granny??? Why in the hell would they do that??? What grandma would drive a monster truck?? Come one!!

I think sweet tooths' ending could have worked with more depth. Instead of ice cream he makes "I Scream" treats where he murders people, butchers their bodies and turns them into sundaes made of gore. Part of the thrill for him is hearing his victims scream in horror and pain as he does it. His wish is to turn the entire human race into the ultimate I Scream treat. When he wins, Calypso gives Sweet Tooth the means to kill everyone on earth and create a massive mountain out of their bodies. He only feels glee for a moment until he realizes there is no one left to kill. No more killing, no more screaming, no more I Scream treats to make. Eventually he climbs to the top of his gore mountain and spends the rest of his life screaming into the sky because it is the only Scream he can hear now.

Hating on TM4 makes sense to me, but why so many people dismiss and shit on TM2012 completely confuses the hell out of me. Just because it lacks the characters so what, the GAME is amazing. AMAZING. FULL STOP lol The PS4 was the 90s revival era and deserved a TM game in some form. unfortunate.

Fair review. My first twisted metal game was the second one but I did enjoy the 3rd one. I think the order that I like the original four is: 2,3,4,1 I didn't care for the original and the fourth one seemed way to easy and the physics got even worse. Tm3 was enjoyable and as you said I think the biggest problem was the total lack of consideration of character stories. I like the levels for the most part and the environment weapons were cool. The music in 3,4 was great as well. I think people just love to hate sometimes and I had a hard time getting used to the different feel of the third one but again, I did enjoy it but it sucked after working to hard to beat the game to see a lame and just outright lazy video at the end.

TM3's main issue is its lack of ambition, and its bizarre physics. It felt a bit too corporate, like we were witnessing Sony's idea of what a Twisted Metal game is, rather than what it ought to be. I think there was a lot of potential to make levels more engaging, and to finesse the controls, but the final product ended up a bit lackluster. It's overall a pretty fun game however, and the hate it received was way over the top.

Never got to try the single player for TM3, but the multiplayer was broken. It ran at like 3-5 frames per second.

Rob Zombie is also industrial metal in addition to Pitchshifter being industrial rock/metal but to each his own of course. I like all the songs and Twisted Metal 3 has one of my favorite soundtracks in addition to 1, 2, and Black.

I do think the story and cutscenes aren’t nearly as good as other games in the series (the only other one worse is probably 4) but the stages and music and gameplay, they’re all realllly good.

It's not just cause you played 3 first. I played 2 first and I loved 3 and 4. 2 is by far the best but I spent countless hours as a kid beating 2,3,4, and small brawl with every character. I remember going to Toys-R-Us and buying 3 and buying 4 when they first came out and I was not at all disappointed with any of them. Each one brings something new to the table and each one has their own problems.

I love all TM games, but 3 is the one I played the most. It's not necessarily the best, but I loved this game so much. Good video, dude.

This was the first twisted metal game I owned. I hate how calypso looks in this game. My favorite thing in this series is the story and they botched it big time in this title. Great review 😊

The gameplay just feels slower and slippery than the previous games. One of the things I didn’t care for as much is the level design mostly being small and empty areas. I also felt like some of the level weapons were over powered. Like Hangar 18 is essentially a race to get the UFO power up as anyone caught in that blast will probably be dead or at least close to dead.

I love all the Twisted Metal Games except small brawl and I didn't play Twisted Metal (2012) I don't own ps3 or 4. Fun Fact: You can save Twisted Metal 3 (not level progress but settings and unlocked characters)to memory card by putting in the code Start,Start,Start,Start,Start at the password screen.

The control is so bad that simple commands like "turn left" and "go fast in a straight line" become major chores.

I played 3 with my brother the most, and he would occasionaly say lets go play a little v2, i enjoyed both :D, v1 afterwards feelt like a discount version of v2, but i couldnt get enough of TM so i had to play that one too. We had a CD with all 3 on it and Vigilante 8. Yes i played that as well and loved it :)

I started with the original Twisted Metal and I honestly liked Twisted Metal 3. Aside from the character stories the game was good. I'm on the same page as you with Minion being my favorite character of the series. When you defeat the cars of the mid stage then have that slight calmness before you see 'Minion' pop up on the enemy bar you knew things got way more serious
