Decent controls and physics. And kept the character stories coming. And it had rob zombie when he was huge.

TM4 isn't bound by trying to be a sequel to a Jaffe game like 3 was. It's 989 doing their own thing, and I think it works. The gameplay is more refined, the maps are diverse and I personally like the soundtrack. Still, the characters and many of the cars are shit, but they're so out there that I don't mind them as much. I much prefer 4 over 3. Neon City's map and soundtrack kinda blew my mind as a kid lol. Great review as always, looking forward to your review of the true sequel to TM2 - Head On.

I blame a lot of what went wrong with TM4 on a lack of time to get the game made. If I remeber right, 989 had a one year window of time to create, test, and promote/advertise TM4. In my opinion they did good with what they had to work with considering 989 had little to no experience with the car combat genre.
@nosepicker19994 жыл бұрын
@@danieltarczynski6559 I actually thought the car physics in TM4 were better than TM2. At least for the heavier cars like trash man, the vehicles didn't slide around nearly as much and was easier to keep them controlled. TM2 always felt like an ice rink to me and taking damage from hitting walls which resulted from that seemed to add insult to injury.

I remember seeing my neighbor playing Twisted Metal 4 and shortly afterwards I got it for Christmas. It was the first Twisted Metal I've ever played (with the next being Black) and I loved TM4, I've put hours upon hours into it. I think the maps are nice and large and fun to explore and I thought (and still do) Warthog had the coolest vehicle in this game. I think most of the vehicles are fun to play through the game with, even the custom ones which I wish returned at some point. I genuinely hated sweet tooth and moon buggy for their specials and I remember beating them required the shield and hyperspace energy things. Great game though, I think it's a shame TM3 and TM4 (hell I even liked Small Brawl) are disregarded by alot of people.

TM3 is iffy as a game, but a miracle considering the new developer had somewhere around 8 months to make it. David Jaffe (one of the original creators and leads on 1, 2, SB, Black, Head On and 2012) even stated as much - he doesn't like it as a game, but respects what 989 was able to do. I would say overall it is the most bland. It borrows a lot from TM2 but slaps on a weirdly realistic-ish physics system that is questionable at best but frustrating at times. The levels are no better. Egypt stands out as something that was unique in the series until Head On and while London is good, TW2 did an urban level better. Los Angeles with all of it's jumps and weird angles showcases how frustrating it can be to control your car and how the level geometry usually doesn't match what you expect to be a solid surface. Washington is a lazy arena. Hanger 18 is a weird, more vertical Washington which doesn't really work well with fixed camera angles, weird physics and a lack of usable weapons. Tokyo is a retread of New York in TM2, but not as fun. Calypso's blimp is a fine idea but a little too small and vertical, not fit for a final boss. TM4 did this much better with the Oil Rig. North Pole is an arena-fied version of Antarctica in TM2. TM4 is a much better game. The team had a bigger budget, more time and as a result were not forced to make TM2-2. It improved upon everything TM3 did and added a whole bunch of new characters, mostly with unique specials aside from returning favorites and duplicates. The levels were much bigger, better designed, all had some cool gimmick and were all fairly unique to the series. I think it's fair to dislike TM3 for it's technical failures. Again, the game is a miracle. But I don't necessarily want to play a miracle. TM4 took the feel of the game in a completely different direction. I personally hate what they did to Sweet Tooth and most of the characters feel like references to more creative works. But the gameplay is solid. So I think it is fair to dislike TM4 for it's story and theme, but it is mostly solid mechanically.

Ah, Twisted Metal 4, the one that got me going. Having experienced the rest of the series, I still have a soft spot for this one. I like its carnival/haunted house color palette. I appreciate that the developers tried adding new drivers and weapons to a stable that doesn't change frequently, even if a lot of the new drivers were just kind of annoying. The levels were great, the soundtrack had a few bangers, and the whole game is a little nuts. Could never quite get down with the dour Black after this one, despite its much better technical side. The levels were just so grim and gray/brown. I didn't want anyone to win because they all still lived in suckworld at the end of the day.

Veteran here. Since 95. Played them all. Dislike Black and TM PS3. Used to HATE 3 back in the Days. But it grew on me over time. And I prefer it way more over the more Modernised titles. I am the one who prefers the goofy, cartoony style, over the dark and gritty look. I love 4. But I understand what you mean. The drivers lack a background story. And the bosses don't even have one. It leaves you hanging. 4 isn't for everyone. To me though, it's probably one of my most favorite. I enjoy the gameplay and visuals. 3 used to bore me. It felt stale. And the clunky controls, consistent flipping over of the vehicles, and saturated, grainy look wasn't to my favor. But again, it grew on me. And now I like an appreciate the game. And it is enjoyable. But 4 holds a special place. It's more enjoyable. There's more freedom. I have better control over the vehicles in every sense. Their quicker, easier to play as, the variety of different levels and vehicles, and overall, a better experience. My top favorites are 1, 2, and 4. With 4 being the easiest. 3 can be difficult, but not as hard as 2 and 1. Or, possibly, to others maybe. I am still on the hunt for competition. I can never find anyone to do battle with. And with that, I'm awaiting for some gaming event to debut with some sort of tournament for one of the original four twisted metals. So that I can enter, and shine finally. I need to put these skills to use. If there ever is such a tournament out their someday, I hope to see fellow fans and veterans alike. Bring all your skills, and don't hold back. You'll need it my friends... Edit: I've always thought 4 felt very RC Car like, and wouldn't be surprised if this was the inspiration for Small Brawl. Especially since one of the bosses is an RC Car. Or, a Japanese microvan with a giant laser attached to the roof.

4 got me into Twisted Metal, yeah I agree with you on some of the characters and the story isn't great but overall it's very fun to play.

I forgot this game had a leprechaun that drove the toy car called microblast and even though most of the new cars weren’t the best, orbital was favorite. Also, Moon Buggy and Sweet Tooth were the reason I raged a lot in this game when I was younger lol

I liked this game as it's own thing, but not a fan of it as a Twisted Metal game. Also, pausing at 0:08 there's an early title card that the devs left behind. It's just the congratulations message, but with 2 extra lines.

Please no remake of these games. Just a new entry. They could really make this game look and feel incredible. I’d love to see a bomb that freezes everything. Have froze cars have lots of different animations instead of ice blocks. Spiked ice freezing like an actual explosion could look incredible and the detail with destructive set prices could be unreal. Just have twenty very interesting creepy twisted characters with a beautiful art style like twisted 2 had.

I love the TM franchise but Twisted Metal 4 is the best Twisted Metal game imo, second would be either black and 2, and small brawl 3rd imo. i like that you can hold X too accelerate on TM4, im not a fan of using arrow keys for acceleration in 1,2,3,small brawl and black.. it feels awkward for me, plus i like that you can save progress on TM4. at the time i used to thought TM2 was the best, until i played all the TM games again.

Do you think if the cutscenes and story was more ala TM1 or TM2 you may have enjoyed this a lot more?

Twisted Metal 4 is the only twisted Metal that Minion actually is a tank. He's an armored car in the first 3 and a 10 wheeler in black.
