Welcome to GamingSins where we nitpick the hell out of video games.
To celebrate the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Hideo Kojima's last true Metal Gear game and possibly the beginning of the end of Konami - we take a look at the game that brought the franchise to the forefront and cemented itself as one of the greatest games ever made. This one was easily one of the toughest GamingSins video to make as this is my (narrator's) favorite game of all time. But even so, EVERY game commits sin....even Metal Gear Solid.

Actually, wrong. You can get through the laser portion with your cigarettes. Oh and Liquid says they are launching the nuke in ten hours, because they couldn't actually launch the nuke. They couldn't override Rex's security, which is why Rex actually actives instead of deactivating when Snake inputs the PAL cards. And you can shoot while running. Square button, hold it. The argument that a Metal Gear can be taken down with a Stinger, thus it isn't the ultimate nuclear weapon is silly. A tank can be taken out with a simple log between it's treads, but it still sure as fuck is more destructive than a foot soldier ever could be.

Kenji Fukushima AS far as I know it's only ST-84 Metal Gear (Sahelanthropus) that has that. The little kritters use it to multiply and make more of themselves. Making the Metal Gear itself a nuclear bomb in the process.

I wanna touch on a few points that other commenters (that I've seen) haven't. -Most of the questions Snake asks are good questions that a highly intelligent Soldier would ask. His repetition in other points may be to punctuate their importance for the player. Additionally: you've obviously never seen Escape from New York if you don't get the reference. -Just because a base is near Alaska, doesn't mean a RUSSIAN MILITARY helicopter should be on a US military base. -Snake is probably yelling at Meryl to get her to snap the fuck out of it and get her head in the game. When I was in the military, they actually did a pretty cool thing where they gave us a minute to find as many words in a crossword as possible. They then had the person next to us yell at us and had us work on a fresh one. To my surprise, almost everyone did better when being screamed at. I'm sure there's more, but I can't listen to this video anymore. The fact that you didn't bother to use the CODEC to find out you could use your cigarettes to see the laser hurts my brain.

I can't remember what it is called (if someone knows please tell me), but it is actually a thing in Japanese to provide verbal interjections to prove you are still listening. It is considered polite. In English, we'd assume that people constantly going "yeah" or "uh-huh" everytime you said something was being an asshole. In Japanese it is considered rude if you don't do this. Furthermore I believe that repeating stuff but as a question could also be a Japanese thing. Anyway I agree with you. I don't think this is really a "sin". It is probably a quirk since the game would have been originally written in Japanese. MGS still has probably one of the best English localizations. There have been many games released years later that had really shitty and annoying VA (like Final Fantasy X). The VA is just generally so good that I don't really care if Snake is just repeating stuff.

MR Gaming You see, I figured out how to get around that. If she's lining up a shot on Snake's head, she won't dodge the boxes. So I just kept popping in and out of cover so they could hit. Granted, that was in the normal boss fight, since she'll dodge the second box. Haven't gotten to the Extreme version yet

Evnyofdeath I tried it a couple of times on Extreme and she dodged right away...she one hit kills you on Extreme so I don't really think it's an option. I have a vid where I S-Rank on Extreme...I died about 5 times on it, but then played again with fresh eyes the next day and beat her straight away. Enjoy the rest of the game :)

4:22 the laser section is EASIER without the thermal goggles, you can obtain them but I actually recommend using cigs as it's far easier to tell which laser is closer to snake. 15:11 To shoot while running, Press Square, then HOLD X, You can let go of square, and keep moving while Holding X, to stop firing the Assault rifle, you can hold onto square to keep aiming the SOCOM, this is a feature in Twin snakes as well

Mason Love Also, Campbell mentions that the US and Russia are going to hold negotiations on nuclear weapons reductions the next day, and if any evidence of the US developing new advanced nuclear weapons got out, the US would lose all leverage they had being the dominant super power at the time and Russia/China would start bidding for the Metal Gear tech from Liquid. Snake even mentions the 10 hour deadline during this codec call.

@@electri-citywatts The controls are simple, running while shooting from a controls perspective is also simple, but this being unknown to many fans of the series is a fault stemming from how the game handles it's tutorializing: Throughout the entirety of the first segment (that is you rescuing the DARPA Chief and Arms Tech President) you receive codec calls that give you (quite immersion breaking) tutorials on how to do certain actions, like climbing ladders, interacting with elevator panels etc. But when it comes to actual combat, the game is sparse with information. This means that some parts are just left unexplained and some of the more intricate things one can perform (drag around guards in a choke-hold, holding throwables to wait out part of the detonation time, lingering stinger lock-on, running while firing, sticking C4 to guards) are all basically unexplained and only people who, either figured this shit out by themselves or have played through the MGS: Integral VR mission pack that was re-released at a later date or dug through the manuals could figure some of these things out.

@@ShandaliyaAstrology Holding down the fire button (square) and while doing that tapping the crouch button (x) allows you to move around and shoot. Does not only work with the Famas, but also the SOCOM pistol, which is handy, as it allows for the laser sight to help you aiming while walkng. This makes the fight with Ocelot a cakewalk as you can just chase him down and fire easily and makes the stairwell a walk in the park. This is however an issue with the game itself, for explaining it's game's mechanics in-game horribly, when it has been doing so from the start (Not a practice I am a fan of, but oh well). It has been explained in the Manualbook the game came with from what I remember, but those that played through the Integral VR mission pack could also learn about this feature and other neat tricks when it came to the Gun-training VR missions, especially the Famas parcour course where you had to destroy several targets in a timewindow. It was even showcased in the idle video intro that plays on that mission pack (great music compilation in that video). Other tricks and quirks the game fails to mention is the lingering Stinger Lock-on that allows you to shoot past obstacles, if your lock-on is still engaged and you turn and react quick enough. Then there is the recollection of Claymores while crawling, which is a bit more well-known already and the ability to stick C4 to guards, and to drag around choked guards by holding the choke button (square again), instead of tapping it to break their necks and probably a bunch of other things I failed to mention.

Should have been, at least, 1 sin added back in for the "epic final battle". Liquid is piloting a vehicle that shows (in the very same cut-scene) that it is capable of destroying pretty much all the cover in the room in a matter of seconds, yet Grey Fox and Solid Snake have time for a nice leisurely conversation about Naomi, and Fox's relationship/history with her. If you watch Liquid in the background, he kinda just aimlessly pokes around all the areas where Fox and Snake aren't, with a level of confusion that is totally unbelievable. They should have been gunned down 8x during that cut-scene, but they are allowed to chat (100% uninterrupted) because the game demands it. The room they're in just isn't big enough to justify Liquid having such a hard time finding them.

I'm one of those rare gamers who never got into this game or this series. I played the PC port of MGS and it frustrated me to no end. Here are a few reasons why: * A stealth game forces you into numerous open gunfights where you have no other option but to mow down enemies. I kept thinking I'd done something wrong. * A stealth game has no non-lethal options for taking down certain bosses. Remember, the tranq gun was not introduced until Twin Snakes. * The game gives you no choice but to kill people, and then tries to make you feel guilty for taking their lives. * Snake is completely unable to knock guards unconscious for more than a few seconds. This forces you to either kill them or run away. * The PC port still uses the checkpoint save system. (To be fair, so did a ton of other early console ports.) * The main plot pretty much resorts to a Hollywood understanding of genetic science. * The game gets rather preachy about how nuclear weapons are the most evil thing ever. Given the full scope of everything that happened in World War II, I have to respectfully disagree. * The ethnic backgrounds of certain characters, like Sniper Wolf, has very little actual impact on their character development, and feels tacked on. * There is a distinct lack of dialogue options during conversations or dramatic moments, so you have to go along with whatever Snake says, even if you disagree with his choices. I just felt too limited and too restricted the whole time I was playing. I would have preferred a branching storyline that is affected by the decisions you make, the ability to do no-kill runs, multiple options for dealing with specific mission objectives, and a greater degree of interaction.

+Falling Pictures Productions Thanks for the recommendations. I didn't mention earlier that MGS was not my first stealth game, even though I know it introduced millions of gamers to the genre. By the time I got around to MGS, I'd already played Thief and Deus Ex. It was Thief, which came out just a few months after MGS, that cemented my idea of what a stealth game should be. "A true professional doesn't leave a mess, don't kill anybody." Your character is weak and vulnerable, and can't afford to charge out and plow through guards. In addition to no-kill runs, you also had the option of doing "ghosting" runs, where you touch absolutely nothing except the loot. So when the PC port of MGS became available, I tried to apply the same strategies and the game simply wouldn't let me. I realized I had no choice but to mow down all the guards when Snake says, "Don't think, just shoot!" I had no choice but to murder the boss characters, even though I would have preferred to either sneak past them or talk them down. The only alternate strategy that actually worked was against the Metal Gear itself, where I found you can run between its legs to escape its LOS and then fire the stinger at its chin from behind. I have actually played Silent Hill 1 several times, and it's one of my favorite survival horror games, along with System Shock 2.

Ocelot killed the DARPA chief during torture by accident, so he wasn't able to crack him into telling him his half of the activation code. The other person who had the other half was Kenneth Baker. Their only option was to trick Snake into thinking they already had the code and were ready to launch, so that Snake could "stop" the launch by inputting the code to "deactivate" Rex with the PAL card key (the one with the memory shape alloys that change with the temperature) when in fact he ends up activating it. This card is given to you by Meryl, which indicates it was not under Liquid's crew possession so they couldn't use it.

It's actually really hard to miss the thermal googles. After Meryl's escape from the cell block, you'll have the SOCOM with you, one way or another (the game just puts it in front of you if you hadn't found it until then). After that, you can find the thermal googles in the second spot mentioned in the video, where you would find them if you got the SOCOM from the truck. So there is not any actual design flaw in the game. You just assumed there was. Seeing the comments, there's no need to remind anyone that thermal googles are not needed to progress through the game, they just make things easier.

Andrew Scheers Dominant/Recessive genes don't refer to the traits that you personally have. It only refers to whether the gene is located in the first or second allele of a gene. For example being born with pale skin and ginger hair is a recessive gene, and no matter how many people in your family end up with said traits, genetically speaking it's still a recessive trait. The fact that Big Boss has dark hair ,means that of the two he shows more recessive traits of his genes than dominant ones. That doesn't change that the gene for blonde hair is still the dominant one.

It's said that Solid Snake had cut and dyed his hair to prevent being too much of a likeness to Liquid Snake (who hadn't changed his appearance and looked like what Big Boss would've looked like if he hadn't modified his appearance) before the Shadow Moses mission (which disregards the continuity of Solid Snake's appearance in the Metal Gear series, but when hasn't MG/MGS disregarded continuity). Rex actually is the ultimate bipedal nuclear weapon platform, considering it was capable of operating after dozens and dozens of external and internal hits from a stinger, as well as hits from Grey Fox's particle beam cannon, and was even able to function years later after a simple systems diagnostic and no maintenance.
