Clem and Crystal are incredibly disturbing because they provide a perfect representation of people who suffer of suicidal tendencies, and how other people react around them if their depression isn't immediately obvious. Most players that don't spend much time around whispering rock and miss these dialog events would only think of them as annoying, albeit positive, characters. The game makes clear that if they indeed completed their "project", all of the campers would have been surprised and that "they seemed fine". Tbf when I first played Psyconauts I interpreted it as that they wanted to murder everyone at the camp.

There is a *bit* of extra depth to Mikhail - not much, but a bit - in that he mentions that he might take a dive against Quentin for the sake of his "long-range career goals," due to how popular Quentin (a "crowd favorite") is. This implies that Mikhail isn't just a meathead who loves to fight, but sees himself as an actual wrestler; a lot of his outward persona (possibly including stuff like the "Deadly Nelson") might be Kayfabe, just a wrestling "bit" he's committed to acting out. He might even be mistaking Maloof's very serious criminal intent as something similar, just with Mafia dons instead of pro wrestlers.

Even if it's still only speculation that Bobby is Loboto's son, it's interesting that you mention Bobby coping with his feelings of powerlessness by controlling others. Loboto was more or less treated like a toy by his own parents and the resulting brain damage left him spending much of his life either on the fringes of society or in an insane asylum. The way he desperately clings to what little agency he has by acting as the "warden" of Thorney Towers is just a grim reflection of Bobby's behavior at camp.

Late to the party. Honestly, I'd find it more ironic if the kid would be one you wouldn't expect, just to mess with you. OR someone that makes partially sense -like Chloe. 'Hearing voices' can be both seen for telepathy and shizophrenia. Loboto got a lobotomy, which was commonly used on mentally ill people, including shizophrenic people. And because Loboto doesn't act very normal, she might believe that he just "found her" one day, at least as she makes the comparision of her situation to others. However, Bobby would open an interesting playing field too. Bobby acts out of a desire for control. Children of parents that have mental health issues, often feel helpless, confused and -if untreated - can sometimes be turned into unwilling therapists & caretakers. Maybe Bobby felt overall anxious about himself. He felt generally powerless and was terrified what other kids would say if they knew about his situation. So he starts bullying people. The biggest "anti" evidence towards Bobby is his teeth. Otherwise, it'd be fairly interesting.

This just makes me sad that someone from camp didn’t stow themselves away on the airplane and go to headquarters, since (arguably) the character design, in both aspects of looks and story, and their just generally more interesting characters then the ones from psychonauts 2. Everyone in rhombus of ruin and psychonauts two just pale in comparison to psychonauts one. Let’s compare the best looking designs from the mainline games (not including recurring characters like, the psychic 7, the aquatos since their both games technically, and Sasha. For the best looking design in psychonauts1, it’s gotta be nobody, but that’s the point. These are all characters who are slightly insane because their on a psitanium deposit. Also I’m psychonauts 2, it’s probably Sam or the eye guy from Helmuts brain, which are both just b tier designs. None of them are really that memorable either, besides from Sam whose just Dogen but streamlined for more random comedy than actual comedy Dogen had, nobody’s really that rememberal. If you're doubting me, come to be when you remember the guy in the wheel chairs name without searching it up, then we can talk. Now for the stories, I think the best one in psychonauts 1 is probably Edgar’s story, just because it’s well flesh out, interesting, and has a somewhat good twist that makes sense. For the stories in psychonauts 2 though, it’s tough, since it’s psychonauts 2’s specialty, but they oddly didn’t do anything with the interns. This leads me back to my point that Psychonauts 1s campers are way better than psychonaut 2s since they just aren’t interesting. Just imagine for a moment, if Chloe stowed away on the airplane, and was reluctantly brought along for the internship like how raz was in psychonauts 1. It would also allow for multiplayer, since it would allow for more story, and just generally be cool. Some things wouldn’t make sense why Chloe is so athletic, but they could just pull a ‘girls can be cool too’ thing. I could also see Dogen being here as well, but I don’t see him being the second player, more of a background character. Another cool thing that could be an alternate reality thing or an easy character is Mikhail. Essentially, I just see him being a stronger Raz that replaces him, takes less damage, and has shorter cutscenes because I don’t think someone like him cares about the story. (And I’m done writing a KZbin video. I could honestly see this being a script if you stretched it out a little bit more and added an intro, so if you want to, just link my KZbin account in the disc. and credit me as the writer.) (hopefully none of this gets cut out, I worked long on this.)

Also, I was to how dark the game was, not how traumatizing their life is, although now that I’m thinking about it, trauma would add some easy depth to the interns that simply isn’t there. Also, while I’m at it, it feels like they tried to pour all of the campers weirdness into Dogens sister (I’ve genuinely forgot her name) but botched it, becuase the reason why the campers weirdness works because it’s one trait for each camper with some depth sprinkle here and there, then censored her to high heaven. (I love going on rants)

Its amazing to me this quirky little xbox game from the early 2000s has more fleshed out, complex, well thought out, and interesting characters, arcs, and dynamics that for the most part are completely option and easy to miss than many big projects even to this day that are front and center. It really goes to show how dedicated the team at Double Fine were o this world in making it feel alive and truly in. Its kind of a shame almost none of the interns in 2 get this level of exploration and development throughout the game, especially considering there is less of them to juggle (though i'm sure some of it was cut in the process of making the game before Microsoft stepped in), but hopefully IF there is ever a follow up to this duology(technically trilogy) we get to see more from them AND the campers because they are all really fun characters!

I agree as well. Besides from Lilli, who I wouldn’t be surprised we’re paired up in missions like Milla and Sasha, I feel like Pheobe is more deserving of being a psychonaut than most of the interns, because you really just need 3 or 4 psychonauts who do all the missions per state/country, and you have the rest being researchers and therapists, because psychonauts are therapists who go to war on the side, not the other way around. Firstly, this video made me remember just how good the other characters were in Psychonauts 1. Makes me wish we got a similar kind of experience with the other interns in the sequel so we could've had the same kind of relationships develop. Second, one thing to note is that one of these campers is implied to be Dr Lobotos own kid, as [spoilers] at the end of Psychonauts 2 when Dr Loboto escapes the Motherlobe, he outright tells Raz "Besides, I left my kid back at camp!", which makes sense given he was also a psychic [though due to his own issues, seemingly lost his abilities] his kid would also develop psychic powers since it seems to be inherited [Raz, Dogen and Lilly as examples of kids with pyschic lineages]. While it's never stated, its theorized that Lobotos kid is in fact Bobby Zilch, mostly due to the shared Heterochromia [different eye colors] and Bobbys terrible teeth [given how terrible of a dentist Loboto is stated to be very often.] Though of course, that's just theory as there is no outright specifics to prove exactly WHO his kid is.

One thing that you overlooked, when it comes to Crystal and Clem are that after rebraining Crystal was feeling stupid for jumping off the roof (as mentioned in the video they stand on the roof ready to what seems to commit suicide) as the poison didn't work, after Raz told her how his psychic powers have become stronger as the story/game progessed. Crystal and Clem seems to take the saying "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger" literally, hence they think that if they don't die from drinking poison or jumping off the lodge, their psychich powers will become stronger. Those attempts fails as while they survive both the poisoning and from falling from a great height (ironically, unlike a lot of platform games, Raz doesn't take any fall damage in the real world even when falling from buildings and cliffs, Raz only "dies" within falling in endless voids inside the minds of people such as Basic Braining or The Milkman Conspiration) but they don't get any stronger than before. Their little speech before jumping off the lodge, it suggests that they planned to attack those who wronged them (like all the campers that saw them as annoying for their loud and overly cheerful cheerings) once they got more powerful psychic powers, making it a little dark for the otherwise seemingly cheerish duo.

I absolutely love games where the NPCs can have their own stories away from the player. Its one thing I love about Super Mario Sunshine as each chapter in a level, you can talk to specific NPCs and they'll typically be going through something you can experience throughout each chapter. One that comes to mind is a mother pinata that throws you and at first she is annoyed but in one of the last chapters when you talk to her she mentions "I feel like I can't start my day until I throw you". There is also another Pinata at the docks who tosses you but in the first chapter he barely makes any distance but come the last one he can toss you all the way to the next platform and even inspires his little brother to start chucking you. Also love it in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, namely the Thieves Guild quest with Amusei. When you first start the quest he is one of the few people trying to join but fails because you complete the quest. Disgruntled about it, he tries to be a freelance thief and fails, getting locked in prison where you find him later and can bust him out. He still tries to make it on his own, until he is arrested again and this time he is almost killed by a vampire who works for the Count before being saved by the player character and at this point, after two failures and a thieves guild member saving him, he decides to try joining up again and the next time you see him, he's not only a member, but high enough in rank that the leader sends him to give you a message. Like...Amusei is just a random Argonian NPC you run into frequently in the Thieves Guild questline but the fact that he has his own things going on, completely separate from your actions makes him memorable and makes me like him as a character despite him not having much of it. Just that little extra step with NPCs can really make them feel more memorable and alive. At least for me, the fact that I can actually still remember these silly little pinata moments or Amusei from Oblivion really speaks volumes about the writing the developers put into these little moments.

Amazing video, as always. Your ability to explore the characters' mental state in-depth while adding layers to the narrative with your psychological expertise is unmatched, and I've grown to appreciate the game so much more thanks to this series. Definitely looking forward to your analysis of Psychonauts 2. I understand how much thought goes into it though, so I'm willing to wait for as long as it takes, cause I'm sure the end result is going to be worth it.

So great to see the campers get some love! I've loved this whole series, can't wait to see season 2! One little thing- an interesting thing about Kitty and Frankie's campster profiles is both list tATu as one of their favorite bands. tATu's whole gimmick is "wow the two singers are in a lesbian relationship wooooooooow!" (which was faked but y'know listen tATu is on the List of Songs That You're Probably LGBT Now If You Liked It in 2003) ANYWAY between this and the wiki mentioning both girls list each other as their "girlfriend", there's a theory that there's uh, y'know. Some gals being pals.

Amazing analysis, as always! I also had a lot of fun reading their profiles on Friendster. There were a lot of details I missed when I played this game for the first time; it's good to know developers put so much attention into details. But I wonder, are Kitty and Franke supposed to be dating? I thought they were friends, like "those two girls who are always together" in almost every group, but their profiles indicate that they are in an "open marriage" (whatever that means for children), and Kitty is searching for relationships with both men and women. Franke also has t.A.T.u as her favourite musical group and in her photo album, which attracted audience partly because its two singers played lesbians on stage.

While you mentioned that Booby Zilch does demand campers paying him arrowheads, you forgot to mention that he does this to Maloof as soon as he sneak out of Basic Braining (before the level starts) and gives Raz the Smelling Salts used to exit a mind to the real world (or once Raz's brain gets seperated from his body after defeating Oleander's brain in his Brain Tank, to the Collective Unconious). He says to Maloof that he owes him three arrow heads as "protection fee", which in gangster term is a way extort certain persons who run a succesful business such as a night club (which they also did with hidden bars during the Probation period when the manufacturing and selling liqoir was illegal in the US during 1920 to 1933) by offering them "protection" and the propritors pay them a fee but in reality what they mean with protection is actually extortion, for if they stop paying, they'll either kill the propritors and/or his/her staff and/or destroy the place, putting the proporitor out of business, meaning the only protection is from the gangsters themselves. By using Clairvoyance on Maloof, he sees Raz as a gangster and since he understands (and the hint that Bobby knows it) the concept of protection money and the fact he says at the end "This is what we do where I come from." when he and Mikhail plant the explosives under Oleander's car, strongly suggests that his dad is a maffia don or a gangster mobster (hence why his favorite movies are the two Godfather films). Another time when Bobby and Benny bullies Maloof, they lock him inside The Psychic Isolation Chamber, which Raz has to open in order to access Sasha Nein's lab. In the process when Mikhail comes and asks Raz if he have seen a hairless bear and comment about Bobby being a bully as he picks on Maloof, being one of the smaller and weaker kids, he is weak himself (like bullies tend to feel, hence why they bully to begin with).

It’s kinda strange how similar Franke and Benny are. Benny is a coward who latched on to Bobby, acting as a sort of henchman to feel some kind of strength. Franke is a follower who sticks by Kitty, shaping her identity based on her popular friend’s example. Given how similar the two are, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they were originally meant to be siblings or close friends earlier in development.
