I liked Van Halen in the Roth era but I didn't love 'em. Now there were some good hit songs but Roth's antics and vocals gave an instrumentally excellent band the look and sound of a party band. I was thrilled when Hagar joined the band. Hagar's vocals and song writing transformed that party band into a very sophisticated rock act.

100% man, I love a ton of songs of the early era but I can't help but feel that Eddie was the one carrying everything, when Haggar stepped in, it felt like all the pieces were finally there, Antony's bg vocals are at their best with Haggar, Alex nails accentuating all of the changes, Eddie not only became a guitar god at this point, but his songwriting became god level too, VH with Haggar was the best era musically, creatively and lyrically

@j-sin3344 It’s funny you say that, because those 2 albums were released just 3 weeks apart. Metallica released Master of Puppets on March 3, 1986 and Van Halen released 5150 on March 24, 1986. That was one hell of a month for the rock and heavy metal world!!

Van Halen formed in my pre-teens and the vintage stuff is pretty good. Then they jumped onto the pop music band wagon with 1984 which was my Junior year in HS. It was bubble gum music though. Then Sammy Hagar came onboard and he brought a sophistication to their music that they never had prior to that. They went from making simple head bangin music with a specific appeal; to a level of sophistication that transformed most genres. They wrote and performed great music with Hagar that was far and beyond anything they had done prior to Hagar. This is a great song....
