@@1076817 Actually that's incorrect, Spren can only be destroyed (not braindead like deadeyes) as far as we know by either two or three things, depending on if you count the Shards themselves, the two others being anti-light or Nightblood. Shardblades themselves are specifically noted to cut Spren but they are capable of reforming again later, just the same that a Fused killed by a shardblade still comes back.

I have not watched a Death Battle Cast in forever. Came solely for Dalinar. Edit: Okay, I am convinced people are just voting for the person they know. I'm also getting increasingly frustrated with people's "power scaling" logic sometimes. Like, "this person beat this other person in a fight who can move as fast as lightning, so they must be able to move that fast as well!" Like, do we even have any context for the things the Balrogs can do?

The main proplem with this match up is that gandalf uses a soft magic system and Dalinar uses a hard magic system

LOTR doesn't have a true magic system tbf. Gandalf's power are more like admin stuff than spells. He was one of the beings who helped sing the universe into being afterall.

@@Vermbraunt I wouldn't really call it soft. "Magic" which destroyed continents, created constellations, shattered mountains, and allowed time travel isn't really soft. The world LOTR only looks like it has soft magic because the setting takes place from a "muggle" perspective. Even then we have descriptions of Gandalf shattering mountainsides and creating storms large enough to crown mountains, and flames equal to those made by an entire army from the novel, and that's only the stuff he did as the Grey.

@@metatron6262 hard and soft magic doesn’t have to do with power levels it has to do with the magic system dalnars magic system has more rules of what he can and can’t do. He has the power to forge and modify the bonds between objects places or realms. And as such he can’t use his power to outright blow someone or something up. While a soft magic system is more like the classical wizard. He can do whatever he does because it’s magic and that’s all the explanation you need.

​ @Metatron That's not what soft/hard magic means. Soft and hard magic is talking about how many rules and how "scientific" the magic is. Soft magics generally are more powerful than harder systems. lotr is one of the prime examples of a soft magic system. Since the magic is never explained it doesn't matter if Tolkien wrote detailed explanations on how it worked (which he likely did being him) Since it is never dived into it de facto doesn't have concrete rules and is thus soft.

Chad, I love your enthusiasm for the Stormlight Archives, but I really feel like you did a disservice in the explanation to the point your opponent explained your character better than you did. Perhaps in the future don't worry about trying to properly explain in universe context and just give quick and dirty explanations like how spren are just concept fae or shardplates are medieval mech-suits. Describing Stormfather as a piece of a piece of a god is more convoluted then describing him as a minor god of superstorms, which he effectively is. Just some advice on breaking down complex story and worldbuilding webs and buzzwords I thought of listening to the episode, take them or don't, you have ten years of experience on me, this is just a problem I noticed listwning to you argue for my favorite character in the series.

i was pretty upset that dalinar should have won but chad did a piss-poor job of explaining his abilities and feats. there was no mention of him fighting chasmfiends on a daily basis or his immense fighting skills or how when you are in shard plate you are more or less unstoppable.

Also, please do Sanderson characters in Death Battle. I know you’ve talked about the difficulty of doing book characters, and I hate to see those series get spoiled for people, but they’re so so good and the characters and powers are great.

This was awesome! As a huge Tolkien geek, I have to point out that Krysti got a few (minor) things wrong. The world of Middle-earth is called Arda, not Aman (Aman is the Undying Lands where the Valar live). Ossë is one of the Maiar, not the Valar (so same race as Gandalf). Also, the singular of Maiar is Maia. Other than that, great overview of Gandalf's abilities. The real problem of putting Gandalf in a Death Battle is that we've never seen him at his full power. It's hard to judge his feats at full Maia strength because he's forbidden from doing this. The last time the Maiar went into god-mode (the War of Wrath at the end of The Silmarillion), a whole damn continent sank into the sea. So theoretically, Gandalf could be immensely powerful. If Gandalf can use his full strength, I think he would win. If he's limited by the rules of the Valar, I would give this to Dalinar.

There abit off on how Mair spirits work. They don't go to the halls of mandos. There body is destroyed and they can return to valinor in a new body. Gandalf was specifically sent back to his gandalf body with it healed and more of his actual power available to him to complete his mission and replace saruman. When saruman dies his spirit attempts to float to valinor but they send a wind so powerful it stops him and means he floats lost powerless and formless forever

Not Chad, but I can tell you Brandon Sandersons recommended starting point. He tells people to only start the Stormlight Archives (Way of Kings, book 1) after you've gotten to trust him as an author. Most people find Mystborn (The Final Empire) a better starting point. My personal opinion, Warbreaker (a standalone that has large crossover with the Stormlight Archives) is a great starting point.

Only 6 min in, but I've got to tell this because Chad showed off his Cosmere tats. My girl and I decided we wanted to get tats, but didn't want to do the whole "matching tats" thing or like a key and a lock or typical stuff like that. We wanted something very us and we're both big Sanderson fans. Instead, She got Atium and I got Lerasium. When combined, they create Harmony. And I just love that so much. If Chad sees this, he'll know why that's awesome.

Honoestly, best chance Gandolph would have with winning is Blackthorn. Against Dalinar though... I have a hard time thinking Dalinar would actually KILL Gandolph unless he is pushed to the brink, But his bonding powers, especially by the end of the Rhythm of War, Gandalf would be completely and totally nuturalized. And I doubt Dalinar would ever pull Stormfather to being shard blade unless he agrees again. He may get the Shardplate though from the Glory Spren.

Gandalf doesn't get power from the Valar. As a Maia, his power is innate, even as an Istar.

@@RiedSiheal Maiar can reform themselves without aid (Sauron did so 2 times), Gandalf's revival was significant, more so because it was a quick revival, which saw his limits somewhat unshackled. Also it was done by Eru, not the Valar.
