If Gandalf just ran out with them the balrog wouldn't have chased them anyways. He was hiding out of fear deep inside Moria and he doesn't know for sure even after his long slumber, if the Valars had really left. It could be his death if he causes any disturbance in the world for Tulkas to notice and he wouldn't risk that. But then we wouldn't have this amazing scene i guess.
