Albums 3 and 4 are decidedly more new wave in style than the previous post-punk of the other two, perhaps that's why you don't like them. But regardless of comparisons, Sara Lee kicks ass in this video

I had to sign in just to agree with this. Go4 was following trend in introducing funk to their sound, but had 2 aces--Gill and Sara Lee. Songs and Hard remain for me two of the standout albums of the '80s.

@@waltlorenzut6338 I like both New Wave and post-punk styles of music, which means I don't have a problem with any of their music, unlike most people who only seem to like one or the other. Interestingly I wouldn't describe "I Love A Man In A Uniform" as either of those styles, it's more like a straightforward rock song.

What we snort, changes how we act is the point where I remembered seeing them at the Outer Limits in East Lansing. Must have been the same year/tour. It sounded so other-worldy then, still does. The hullabulla ensued and talk of entrapment over a certain white powder.

I've seen them on this tour in Munich. Same beginning as here, but when Andy plugged in his guitar and stroke the first chord, you couldn't hear anything of the rest of the band. ;-) After 15 or 20 minutes we got used to it and since then I find almost all other live recordings (like this one here) quite tame. ;-)

It was very wrong of Jon King to fire Burnham. Hard would be alot better with him on it instead of a drum machine. The band did some strange career moves (first by bullying Allen out of the band) which in the end ruined ut for them. Gill has said in recent interviews that King ended the band in 1984. Which was baffling when they were hitting it big playing for large audiences. They are not on speaking terms after King left in 2011. Allen and Gill has also been feuding in recent times over Allen's involvement in Apple/Itunes. There should be written a book about this band troubles with eachother. lol

I understand you have to progress and change things up but G.O.F after 81 was not the biting force they had been since....The watered down "Big" sound killed the message...I do respect them for still having meaning in their tunes but everything after solid gold really suffers in the sound department....shattered glass guitars,Shattered genre's rhythm section and shattered minds via the vocals...not after 81 though.

This recording proves that the "Songs of the Free" songs were also giants. Though "Hard" was limp. Still, three great albums is enough for any band.

He was fired by King in the spring of 83. So it was obvious that he was intended to play on that album, hence the Hard songs featured here. Although stated in some bios that he left the band himself, it is not true. There was a lot of animosity in the band early on. Allen was bullied out of the band. Thats why he left. None of them are on speaking terms anymore. Sad really!

@@bent2 The interesting thing about this concert in my opinion is the way that the Hard singles sound much more like classic Gang Of Four songs from previous albums compared to the way they eventually ended up sounding on the studio album. What this shows I think is how important the production at the studio in Miami where they recorded the Hard album was in making the songs sound so much more like "New Wave" tracks, rather than post-punk. On here they still sound more like post-punk: It Don't Matter, for example. As it happens, I'm a big fan of both styles of music, so I'm not complaining about it, one way or the other. I love the way Hard sounds as a studio album.
