Martin Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis introduce "Gangs of New York," in which they bring to life the the lesser-known history of early New York City and the violent clash between immigrant classes.

usually kind of introverted and reserved people are the greatest artists. look at Michael Jackson. not that I'm trying to compare him with DDL, since they are of course two very different people in many respects, but you get my point. I think they get to vent and release a lot of what's inside them when they perform, and that's why it becomes such a great end result. my 2 cents.

I mean Bill was notoriously, actually very charismatic in real life as well. He never had to extend much effort to convince men to follow and even give their lives for him. This is played on in the film when Leonardo's character almost gets "converted" to Bill's cause, and even goes as far as protecting him from an attempted assassination.

This is a big eye opener for me in how long of a process it can take to produce movies/time it takes for a film to actually begin production. It’s 2023 when I’m watching this now but you hear Scorsese mention he really wanted to make the movie “Silence” with Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver and it was just released in 2016. So he already has the film in his mind to produce but it doesn’t come to fruition until 15 years later and there’s no telling how long before this interview is released that he was already doing the writing for it. Even for Gangs of New York they were talking about how they already started writing the script in the 70s and it was released in 2002. Very fascinating!

The setting is just magnificent. The film is almost 3 hours, it really grips you in the world by the end. A cinema experience very unique. We've seen lord of the rings, beautiful medieval backgrounds, we've seen dune, a masterpiece presenting a fantasy world. But this movie gives you this strong, unapologetic feel of violence, chaos, collapse with political conflicts and racism. The movie doesn't shy away how brutal the time was. black people hanged on street, fire lighting up their corpses. People cheering and in rage yet celebrating. Martin somehow mix wrath with comedy. A strong whisky with viscous aftertaste .

OMG where do I start with this clip ? Firstly it's two of the greatest people in the history of cinema. The interviewer, who I suspect is well known in the States but unknown in Britain, is knowledgeable and respectful. Scorcese is as always full of enthusiasm and insight ..but Day-Lewis, who is probably the greatest actor in the history of films is actually caught being almost himself. So shy, quietly spoken and self deprecating it's hard to imagine him as Butcher Bill. Since then he has gone on to portray other incredible characters that he always brings unerringly to life .. and then retired again ! A wonderful insight into a genius at work.

He never lets go of him... they’re all still with him. One character roles into the next and into the next. That’s why he’s so different now than he was in the past, because he’s no longer Daniel Day Lewis, he’s Daniel Day Lewis and Bill the Butcher and Daniel Planview and Abraham Lincoln and Jack Slavin and Guido Contini ... the way he immersed himself into a role, it’s impossible to shed that. I'd have to surmise that Mr. Day-Lewis, during his 5-year hiatus from filmmaking, was "decompressing." Like a scuba diver heading to the surface, he needed to let his body re-acclimate to normal human conditions. We've heard stories of Heath Ledger's total immersion in "The Joker" character in "The Dark Knight" contributed to his mental imbalance that led him to death. Daniel seems a person how, at times, needs his privacy and to move out of the mind-set of the last character he portrayed.

I would have absolutely no clue that’s the same person from the film. Absolutely insane acting skills.

Damn it Charlie! DDL don’t wanna talk about those seven years off.

The butcher and Daniel plainview are probably my two favorite and interesting characters in movies.

This is probably the 1st interview I have ever seen him in. I had to find one just because this guy is so fuckin good of an actor i needed to see the contrast Every role Lewis has ever played i swear it bares NO resemblance to the real man He must be the greatest actor of all time I don't think it gets better

It's such a shame that Charlie Rose screwed up his image because he was probably the very best interviewer ever.

Imagine if DDL collaborated with De Niro and Scorsese on a film! Too bad he’s retired 😭

Nick Wilkie Unfortunately yes. He retired in 2017 after filming Phantom Thread.

Well, he claimed the same after finishing the Boxer just to come back with this awesome performance as Billy the Butcher on Gangs of New York. He could probably go back to acting if its the right material.

Thank you DDL for coming back for this film! Love the movie. Just did a intercultural communications paper on this movie. My main topics were the power dynamics, culture conflicts and meso level theories. now im done with the paper and just want to learn more about the actors. :)

I think DDL was a hired killer between 1997 and 2002... only explanation as to why he won't get into specifics.

Very interesting discussion. Charlie Rose…allows and facilitates a really good interview moment and then steps right in front of it himself.

What this man Daniel is saying to me is that you must not EXPLOIT the gifts that God has given you...Honor Cherish and Protect it with all your might...so you may be allowed to share it at its fullest Spiritual capacity again someday. Thank you Daniel..I will follow. 🤲🏾
