Years ago I heard a story from a missionary about a notorious Honduran gang leader who became a Christian. He would walk around his old neighborhood preaching with his Bible held up and lifting up his shirt so you could see his waistband and he would say "I no longer carry a gun but I still have a weapon". He was so so much more than a murderer and persecutor, also a tax collector, universally hated at all times by all people. Kindof a hilarious thing really that the bible mentions that he was basically an IRS agent. He was the least ideal person to bring the gospel to so many people and was used in a mighty powerful way, same as many other men in the scriptures. Just like us. It's a living message to all of us, we are enough, no matter what we have done, Jesus will come to be with us if we seek him, he will work through us. Even us. Thank God!

I worked in both Christian music and then Christian publishing in Nashville, TN for many years. While I worked in publishing I worked directly with ministers and ministries one of them being, Charles Colson. This younger generation of adults (some Millennial's maybe but fewer younger than that, I'd guess) would even know who this man is. He served as Special Counsel to the President during President Nixon's term (1969-1970) and was, I believe the "fall" guy of Watergate, pleading guilty to obstruction and serving a prison term for it. It was during this time that Charles (known later in life as Chuck), became a Christian and launched a ministry called Prison Fellowship. This ministry and Prison Fellowship International, are both very strong in a vast majority, if not all, prisons in the U.S. and around the world. Chuck has said Manu, many times and I've heard these words spoken by him personally, "that without those Prison bars, he cannot say that he would be a follower of Christ, today. But BECAUSE of where he was, he haf nowhere else to look, but up." Always remember, Christ saved the thief hanging beside him from an eternity in hell. THAT should be all the proof you need in answer to this question. If He's done it once, He'll do it again!

Society and spirituality (whether organized or not) should be part of rehabilitating criminals. The criminal justice system is such a mess I bet many incarcerated people are innocent or were given unfairly drastic sentences to feed the for-profit prison system so prisoners can be used for slave labor.

No. Spirituality is another word for self-delusion. And if anything, it's just being used to divert blame away from those that did bad things. 'Oh it wasn't me, it was the devil!' or 'who cares what I did? I didn't believe in Jesus back then so I can't be blamed for it now' or 'My chackra's weren't in alignment'. And nations that are significantly Christian such as the US do worse in nearly all fields compared to lesser Christian countries such as in Europe. You have entire gangs of Cartel members that are all deeply religious. You think it rehabilitates criminals. I think it does the exact opposite.

For me, there is a difference between religion and faith. Religion is the practice of beliefs...faith is just believing. I am not religious, but I do my best to practice what I feel my faith asks of me. I believe many can have different faiths...as well as different religions. What binds us is belief in getting along. My dad was atheist and my mom was Catholic, but appeared agnostic half the time. I went to Catholic school with my sisters when I was little. When we got older we stopped going because my older sister really hated it. I liked it though and would go to church when I could drive, I never got “confirmed” though. Eventually I got to studying the Bible in college and became a non-denominational Christian. I think it is great that God draws us near him no matter what our situation. Some he calls and chooses, and others he does not.

If you read the scripture it says to turn away from your sin. If you return to it, it grieves the holy spirit so it can't fully reside in you. Repeated sin without true repentance will take God's hand off your life. It literally equates it to returning to your own vomit.

Religion can create a foundation with which to build a life and create successful social interactions such that you can be productive and fulfilled. Religion can also be used to justify some pretty evil actions, as has been seen many times in the past. But "save" in religious terms usually refers to the Christian notion of salvation, and in that case religion won't save anyone, only Jesus can. But here's the thing, criminals and non-criminals alike are sinners, so equally need Jesus.

Interesting interview , I grew up in an environment where chaos happened but we all went about our business the next day as if nothing happened . We heard everything but the Queen’s English , the most colourful expressions delivered with great humour , as adults as we share our younger lives people look horrified or fall off their chairs laughing . Getting to know the Lord is not a religion being a Christian is not a religion I say this as a Christian myself. And you know what yes it means standing up for the Lord and putting people in their place who swear or take the Lord’s name in vain because that’s not okay. Why would I not stick up for someone who died for me and everyone else to take away arson. What gets me as well as why would people disrespect him by swearing and taking God’s name and vain.
