When it comes to sharpening, I bow to your expertise. I seriously can't sharpen by freehand. I have a KME and I can look at this and see so many shortcomings. This one makes justifying the cost of a KME easy.

I use the Spyderco sharp maker just to have something out at all times. I don't use the micro bevel side, just set everything at 15 degrees. But when I want to actually take my time and make my knives mirrored and nice, freehand.

Yep for anyone who has already purchased this I would get rid of the base altogether and make one yourself. The upright portion along with the rod and stone holder appears to be ok along with the swivel portion. That part might make it a good buy if you make your own base for it and realize the stones are ok for softer steels and already have some good diamond stones. But again I must stress that you have to be able to make your own knife holding base for it to function. There are quite a few plans on the internet for making a base also even rotating ones. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

Just watched part of a video in foreign language on the sharpener. The bottom plate is supposed to be the backstop for the blade. You are clamping the blade on top of the bottom plate. This is why you are getting all the wobble. Try clamping the blade with the bottom plate as a backstop and see if the wobble goes away. Blade flipping will also be faster.

IL try it but Regardless, I still don't think it's worth buying, I think it's a system that will quickly make you buy something else and in the end will be a waste if money. I do appreciate you taking time to look into it

Ganzo has another one that suctions to the table, looks a lot better with a long stone holder rod that can do really big kitchen knives even. With good stones that system would be good. I think it’s the touch pro ultra.

Ganzo TOUCH PRO ULTRA (GTPU) I think is a lot better than this, very similar to the Edge pro apex but I recommend getting some better stones. And also the Ganzo RAZOR PRO (GRP) that's made by RUIXIN is liked by many, on that one the knife clamp can be rotated. But having a digital angle finder is nice to have in the beginning.

@kazefw3834

Freehand with a decent diamond plate, or freehand with a set of water stone but that's only if you don't mind a longer sharpening session, diamond plate will be faster but a bit more pricey. Buy a angle guide like the one in the video if you just started learning freehand, it'll make your angle holding more consistent

I could see a novice getting VERY frustrated with this system, & worst case scenario they believe all systems are this frustrating & be turned off by sharpening altogether. Not good. I use a Wicked Edge Go. They are definitely expensive but I have not regretted it for even a second. Love the thing. The Work Sharp Precision Adjust gets consistently rave reviews for only $20 more.

If it looks like junk, is put together like junk, performs like junk, it’s probably junk. I’ve got a Smith’s angle arm sharpener and I hate it. These are a failed concept. Getting a sharp edge is a spiritual event, not a mechanical. Nothing competes with the human touch on a sharpening stone. Thanks for calling out this piece of junk.
@hibahprice6887
@hibahprice6887 7 ай бұрын
The original from which the idea for this replica was taken does not even have such a fixation. It's just a magnet. The magnet is always worse than the clamp; you simply did not tighten the fastening tightly, or your knife is too tight for this fastening. If you can say anything to justify the “original” for 500 bucks, go ahead. If you can’t sharpen a knife on a 37 bucks sharpener simply because it “doesn’t stay rooted,” what kind of craftsman are you? This is a sharpener for home use, the word “pro” means nothing, this is China, all the products there are “pro, max, ultra, etc.”

As soon as I saw Gonzo "pro" sharpener, I knew what to expect. Jus' sayin'. I mean it's kinda cool they tried. But if you want a system but don't wanna spend crazy money, it's totally worth it to get the work sharp precision adjust. I picked up the large kit with the extra stones, and the case for like $120. Just save a lil money or go with the one without the case and stuff for around 55 bucks. I'm just putting this out there for people looking to get into systems.

Right off the bat I can just tell you aren’t using it the way it was intended. Lol but I probably woulda done the same thing especially since the damn instructions weren’t even in English. But anyway I don’t believe those are not intended to be clamps, they’re used to rest the spine against… I’ll leave you a link to check out, but this isn’t in English either 😂 but still, you can skim through it and see what I mean. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYeplaemnJioZtE

There are several of these "clones" you can get for less than $30. On eBay, sometimes $15 plus shipping. Are they good? Um...they work. But if you are OCD, stay away from these. For some reason, OCD people get attracted to knife sharpening. I guess it's precision and perfect input-guided sharpeners offer OCD sufferers are attracted to. And if so, this is not a good beginner tool. The creator was frustrated because it came out of the box configured in a way he did not understand. The vertical clamp configuration is for sharpening scissors! If one is interested in guided sharpening, but does not want to make a 3 figure commitment to equipment, this is a decent doorway into the rabbit hole known as sharpening.
