Cable keeps the spring from flying through someone’s head if the spring breaks

My old garage door was from around 1972 and didn't have that support cable. When one of the springs broke it dented the roof of the car under it. It didn't even really scratch the paint. Since the car is a 1995 Buick (in fairly good shape) I just live with the slight dent. I was very happy it didn't break any windows.

As a Garage door guy myself, I will warn any homeowners who want to attempt a spring repair. The door MUST be in the open position when dealing with extension springs. All cable anchors must be tight. Have personally been to a job where husband put on extension spring and forgot safety cable. When the cable stop gave out (improper tools/clamping done) the spring shot to the back of the garage... and hit his 9yr old daughter in the face. Take your time, do your Research, and if in doubt just call a professional. Handyman, extension style lifts always run rough, due to it being set in the air. It's very difficult to level a door when your cable lengths might be different depending on how you set them in the hooks and stops. its why the cables fray often on them and why we usually recommend converting them to the Torsion spring setup. As usual, good Garage Door Video :)

People make videos saying that garage door installers are pushing people to convert to torsion just to rip homeowners off, but you explained exactly why torsion is better

That’s a low headroom door installation The extension spring is necessary because there’s no headroom above the door, and the return pulley diameter is undersized which lead to the breakdown of the cable.

Doesn't the spring cable contain the spring if it were to break? A safety device.

I was always under the impression the second cable is a safety cable so in the case the sping breaks under tension iy doesnt like go flying thru some ones skull 😆 garage doors verry dangerous trade. But i can see how it would also serve as like a guide for the sring to run on. Maybe its both. Torsion springs even more dangerous. I spent a few years working for a door comany about...a long fcking time ago and those torsion springs for the big doors. Are way crazy. Out side locks off to shaft inside of springs lock off the the bracket on the wall which can eadily rip itself off the wall tossing the guy to his death if he didnt die from getting hit with thousands of pounds of spring tension. And thats just one of litterally a hundred ways over head doors can kill you so.. If any ones going to mess with them be sure and do your home work. I know more than one guy missing parts or maimed for life from this trade. Not being a know it all... cuz i dont remember too much ...accept always realizing how much danger i was in working with this shit. 😆 😆 just a heads up.

That reminds me of the roll up doors that you see on the back of delivery trucks. There’s 2 spring loaded rollers. One on each side. And when one cable is broken, you will need at least 100 lbs force to roll up the door. Just as in your video warning about repairing a broken roller spring in a garage door.

I have had several springs break over the years. Pretty scary when they break in the middle of the night. They should be replaced in pairs. They are color coded. Mine have a white color on them. Also, the attached roller should be closed to the door frame so the cable goes straight down to the bottom of the door. It probably rubbed against the metal track and wore through the cable. Also, replace the rollers. Moving the roller will prevent that condition. As others have mentioned, the other cable is for safety. I replace all of the cables when I replace the springs. It’s not a hard job, but needs to be done right.

It's not a spring support, it's a safety cable that keeps the spring from flying through a wall or a head if the spring breaks. Probably the most important cable on the door.

Hey, a garage door guy here. On those screw drive openers run a bead of white lithium (the thicker stuff in the tubes) and it will make it so quiet. Very easy to over do it so don't go using the entire tube on 1 job. Some doors I have to clean it off and reapply.

There are some very clear pulley rub marks on the track that you see at about 5:00. Looks to me like those two bolts you showed at about 2:30 are a possible cause for cable failure if the cable rubbed against the threads and rough bolt end. I’d be considering replacing the nuts with nylon nuts and trimming the bolts flush with their ends..... great find of cable issues on the other doors!

What's up man, Thanks for a another helpful video. I recently did a full garage door installment. I mean FULL. Took out an old broken door, tracks, Gd Opener, etc... I replaced everything and it works beautifully .... but where the cable goes through that little plate near the S hook, I just slid it through in that over under and back over again to hold it in as the directions had indicated but I never saw one of those clips which I would much rather use. Was that specifically for garage door cables or something you added as a better of doing it? I will look for them for the future. Thanks again, always learning something from you .. big or small.

Should spray some lube on every roller, overhead doors need that. If you have the torsion spring type overhead door you should lube the torsion springs too- they tend to bind and jerk as they loosen, throwing the lift cable out of it's spiral groove- and then you have trouble.

Ideally you would want that front pulley spaced out with 1 or 2 washers to bring it out from the track so the spring doesn't ride along it

Our pull up cable broke completely once and the "locator" cable did not kept the spring up in its place. As the pull up cable broke the spring was shot back and completely dismounted from its place, Almost hit our car. Luckily no one was in the garage. Also, the spring on the other side and the garage door engine can hold the door (at least on our garage) and it won't fall on anyone even if one side is off. Though, it wasn't strong enough without both springs to pull up the door anymore. The handyman came to repair it said to always change the cables on both sides at once, even if the other seems fine. We got created a bespoke cable with the exact size, with factory made hooks on both side to avoid using those clamps which can come loose at any time.

I don't believe the thicker cable will cause problems on an extension spring door, but if this were a torsion spring application, it is important that the cable be the same on both sides.
