Great work very skilled for my eyes! I don't know a thing about the necessary multi-desiplinaries involved here. I am crippled and need to build an elevator that can handle 230lbs plus. Installed in my house before my skills have left. This video is priceless for a guy like me. Thank you for sharing your skill and inventions. Your video is to the point and speaks cinematically. Well done !

I have been pondering making a dumwaiter using box rails (barn door rails) but the garage door rails are a great idea. Thanks

Should be interesting to see how it will last, considering a garage door opener is not designed to lift without the aid of springs. Creative idea, but it should have a counter balance.
@danburch99893 жыл бұрын
Springs hold the garage door in a neutral position about 1/2 way open. The opener only has to overcome the spring tension for 1/2 the travel up or down after it passes the neutral position. If this is going to life more than about 50 lbs, yes, I agree that a couner balance is necessary. I need on on my 2nd floor just above the laundry room.

@@danburch9989 ? the motor-head of a inactive operator holds the door down (via the trolley & j-arm) against the torque of the compressed torsion spring. When the operator activates, the j-arm is released and the unwinding spring does the work of lifting. Garage door operators don’t last long without a cable + drum + shaft + torsion spring setup. Unless the purpose is to lift bags of groceries I suppose.

Love this! Definitely something we are going to do in our future farm, to get loads of the harvest into cold storage!

I would use this Garage Door Operator as a Service Passenger Elevator

WHAT?!?! What sorcery is this that your speak of?!?! If that were mine, i could put what ever I wish into it? This is beyond belief! I’m aghast at the thought!

The speed of movement is preset in the motor at the factory. I choose to leave it that way. Did not do any weight tests, but I would imagine that it would easily lift 100lbs. I got the motor at Overhead Door Co. Thanks for commenting

Peter Maurer Great idea...I need to make one outside for my 100 lb dog....he can't do steps anymore...:-( And I want to make one for myself...at least up to 200 lbs...I don't weight that much, but I want to carry groceries in...You are so smart...thanks...:-).

Very nice. Ty for sharing. Did you or they do any weight tests after install? I know you mentioned you didn't at the time. But it's been a few years.

Could it be made so that in the basement it stops closer to the floor? I'm looking for a creative solution for my mother to be able to do laundry without having to carry it back upstairs. It would be best if she didn't have to lift the basket down to the floor, or up onto the unit.

Cool idea! I want to do a dumbwaiter lift on out side of house from first floor porch to second floor porch for hoisting plants. I may need to have an extended reach. Is it possible to extend the reach? Adding more chain? Adding more cable. Thanks for your response.
@petermaurer16687 жыл бұрын
john Wow - yes, it should be able to be extended.

It would be nice to know the maximum capacity. that way it would last longer without putting strain on the motor
@smichelsen9 жыл бұрын
Very cool. When going up, why does it start out slowly, then speed up?Have you determined what the max weight this can move?What make and model of garage door opener did you use?
@petermaurer16687 жыл бұрын
The speed change is a feature of the garage door system, preprogrammed. I got the parts from Overhead Door.
@petermaurer16687 жыл бұрын
The garage door system is very strong and should be able to lift alot. The true strength would be determined by the strength how you built the carrier box, in this case 2x2 and some plywood... low to average strength. In other words do not put a child on this lift!

I'd like to build something similar in my house. Is it possible to obtain information about the lifting device and maybe instructions to build it? I would like to lift charges max 200kg from the basement level to the first floor.

Great for dirty clothes....if u wash them in basement....but all u need for that is a hole in the floor n so.e duct...lol

Bro what are you using for lift up that elevator mechanism ? That is not using hoist right ? Cause it sounds pretty quiet, and faster too... compared to someone that been using electric hoist. Sorry for my english

Do you have set of detailed instructions?
@petermaurer16687 жыл бұрын
Kimberly Hartwick - no plans, this was custom built onsite, and I didn't draw anything. just started building and kept going til it was done:)
@catlayland87346 жыл бұрын
Did you have to cut any joists?
@billadams50724 жыл бұрын
I'm building one similar to Peter's now to handle laundry and yes I had to cut joists, head them off with double joists to code. The weight factor is bothersome from an engineering standpoint however I plan to counterbalance if necessary.
@petermaurer1668 Жыл бұрын
Cutting joists not a big issue because you frame it solid under the basement floor.
@krayolad29208 жыл бұрын
could a human stand on it
@petermaurer16687 жыл бұрын
Krayola D - not on this one. Elevators are very tricky and highly engineered. I would be leery to build one in the fashion.

A garage door opener? Someone's house? This is a comment you're familiar with: just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Several of issues: There's no interlock on the doors, there's space to stand for a child inside door if closed, a remote control means operation out of direct view, GDO is not meant to lift loads (said by R. Ive)- all relate to entrapment. It's one thing for your own house, but you should remove that from "someone's".

Buy a dumb waiter and do it right. This is unsafe.

One cannot buy and sell people since the 13th Amendment, and it is probably not nice to call even a deaf waiter "dumb" and try to enslave him. Perhaps you meant a dumbwaiter.
