Just had this happen to me a few weeks ago! It looks intimidating when you see all the shredded pieces. I ended up replacing the whole unit and also the trolley. The door was catching and making it stop halfway up. Everything was about 15 years old. Lasted a good while. Great video!

This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen on KZbin. We almost went down the path of buying an entirely new garage opener, only to discover that this is our exact problem, and all we need is a $20 part?! (which we'll be buying through your amazon link). Every step Shannon shares are SO helpful, well explained, and filmed perfectly. Just subscribed for more.

Some people don't have the aptitude for DIY. They think everything is too complicated and need to let a "pro" handle it. Shannon makes incredible videos and gives the average DIYer confidence to tackle projects on their own. I think the one thing that set's Shannon's videos apart from other KZbinrs is that he shows the whole process no matter how insignificant it may seem. I'm about ready to close on my house and needs some work so I am incredibly happy to have these videos for reference. Keep up the great work Shannon!

Well, easy in appearance, he also knows all the steps many people take this on and spend substantially more time and effort my time, and my effort are worth more than it would cost to call in a garage door tech for a semi complicated change like this not saying I couldn’t do it, but I’d rather use my time to do something better

Hey thanks, had a bad morning and after adjusting the door stop not to hit so hard, it finally got too low to get the car out, so thought id adjust it up farther. Got it almost perfect but though just a tad farther. Well that little adjustment sheared off the plastic gear just my luck of course. Thanks so much for the info, was able to take it apart and order the correct part with your link. Made a bad day better thanks so much.

Thanks for the starting tips! Could not lift out the shaft because it is too close to the ceiling. Would have had to drop the whole assembly. Then figured out an easier way. Set door shut. The motor is held with 4 easy screws. Dropped it down and had access to the gear. Drilled away the gear material around the pin and with a c-clamp and an old nut as spacer drove out the pin. Used the clamp to push the pin back in, but had to use the worn gear mounted just below the new one to create a wide enough prying surface for the c-clamp. Nice because you do not touch the chain and you do not disturb the timing.

Thanks for the truly excellent video. It's important to check what type of gear one has. I have a very old Overhead Door opener that has a square hole in the center of the gear. Apparently some Genie doors also have it. They are on the same page on the link above. Just save some annoyance and check before ordering. I almost ordered the wrong one.

I sub’d and ❤got what I needed from your video. I wouldn’t even have taken the motor down had I found your channel first. I made a wooden cradle to rest the shaft horizontal to drive the roll pin out to replace the gear and tapered one end of the roll pin slightly on my grinder for easier reinstall. The door opener was probably never adjusted properly because once it stopped raising up I realized the carrier was slamming against the stop bolt and sheared the gear collar almost completely off on one side. Much thanks ❤. I found my part at The ROP Shop on eBay for under $8 with free shipping.

8:00 THIS STEP IS HUGE. I don't know who needs to see this, but if you go with a new assembly (vs replacing the gear alone) save yourself 10 minutes of fiddling and drive the screws into the cap BEFORE you place the gear/shaft assembly into the motor unit. The screws that go into these holes are self-tapping. You will not be able to tap the hole closest to the motor with just your fingers or a little baby 5/16 wrench, and the screw will keep falling out resulting in many ladder climbs or poking and fishing the screw out from the motor bracket. However, once the screws tap each hole and you drive each screw all the way in before backing them out again, you'll be able to easily finger-tighten all three screws while you have it up in the air in the motor unit. Make the job EASY for yourself, please! Thanks again, HouseImprovements!

I have a garage door opener with similar nylon gears. It is a very old unit, I have never replaced anything on the unit and the door opener gets used daily. Here is my secret to keeping it in like new condition year after year. I open the unit about once a year and generously apply nothing but a product called Vaseline. I use a q tip for an easy applicator. Also don't forget to apply special lube to the long tension spring over the doorway. If you don't lube this spring it will oxidize over time and break.

Hi there. I appreciate the time and effort to make this content available to the general masses. I found your video very helpful and was able to get my unit back up and operating last night. I am however having trouble with adjustments. Currently, my chain seems to be correct however my door now opens too much and when closing still leaves about a 3-4" gap at floor/dr bottom. I've adjusted the dials on the unit to tweak the up and down but these appear to be either not doing anything or only micro-adjustments. Any insight as to how I might otherwise adjust things for a more substantial shift in the doors closing position? I'm really hoping I can avoid taking the whole unit down again to adjust the position of the chain on the sprocket, Mine was a real beast to take down and put back up (I don't have the luxury of all that overhead clear space like yours does in the video - the top of my unit sits about 1 1/2 inches below the ceiling...) If that is the only way, which direction should I shift it? More slack to the rope cable end or more slack to the tensioner screw end? Did I mention I really hope there is another way :)
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 жыл бұрын
You may have to put the door in the down position and remove the chain and lower the door to the floor then re install the chain. Before doing that I would turn your up and down travel settings to about the middle position so you have some adjust meant after wards.
