Had that exact Asus for about 8 years. It used to drive me crazy sometimes on how slow it was but I still loved the laptop.
@AAComputersandTechnology3 жыл бұрын
Yup, even though the laptop I had back in the day had a quad core I7 and 16GB DDR3, the 5400RPM drive made is such a nightmare to use. Adding an SSD to these is a must!

Those older AMD chips surprised me. I found an HP business laptop with an A6-4400M inside, threw an SSD in and installed linux and it works pretty well!

I also have a Samsung with an A6-4400M, installed MX Linux on it... Temps are really hot though, around 55-60C idle and 70-75C while browsing with Firefox. Is this normal?
@LoganT5473 жыл бұрын
@@cayniner no, that's not normal. You should replace the thermal paste and also check the heatsink and fan for dust. Overheating is bad for your CPU and could possibly kill your laptop entirely.

18:30 A lot of laptops are like that, you just have to unscrew the drive and it will come out from your typical sata connectors. Any 2.5" drive should fit fine. I own a similar HP laptop from the era. And mine has two different manufacturers of ram from the factory as well 🤔
@PedroPimentel3 жыл бұрын
I had an Acer Aspire TimelineX with that kind of connector, it was unreliable and I could never find a replacement

I got an acer with AMD A8 back in 2012. It's pretty capable for casual gaming as it can play stuff like Skyrim, Starcraft 2 and CSGO as well as more modern games like Overwatch and Doom. I got mine upgraded to 8GB ram and Kingston 200GB SSD (pretty expensive back then). Sadly the APU died after around 5 years. By the look of it dead APU seems to be a running theme for these A6-A10 radeon laptop regardless of manufacturers.

The cable for the SATA drive is something that HP has been doing since at least as far back as Core2Duo systems. Both HP and Dell has similar setups for IDE way back when as well. Nothing new or strange about it.

probably a tad late but you might be able to fix the display of the laptop by using the pizioelctric element that you find inside laptops and sparking it on the broken display area

The A8-4500M was the processor that powered my second ever laptop back in the day, daily drove it for a few years and was a decent performer. Performance is roughly on par with a Core 2 Duo E8500 so still perfectly fine for basic use.
@springer-qb4dv3 жыл бұрын
True, but A8 is not just cpu like Core2 Duo - it has integrated gpu so it blows Core 2 Duo out of water when it comes to graphics performance.

I don't mean to come off as paranoid or rude but please destroy and dispose of that knockoff Asus charger! I took apart the exact same thing but with an older HP plug at the end when I was salvaging parts from my dad's old laptop. The low voltage secondary, specifically the secondary side of the optocoupler, was just 1mm millimeter away from the primary high voltage side of the interference suppression capacitor. So basically the user is a millimeter away from death by electrocution. I believe you need at least 6mm for it to be legally compliant and safe at all worldwide mains voltages, but if experimental rumors are correct in 110/120v countries you can maybe-ish get away with 3-4mm without too high risk of shock (in my case the charger was used in a 230v country since my family is in Europe so yeah...). Also the interference capacitor could be dodgy (it must be a proper class Y1 safety capacitor that fails open circuit instead of short circuit or else...) depending on who actually made the charger, and don't get me started on the possible risks of electrocution that can be brought on with a dodgy transformer. To add insult to injury, the poor heatsinking (hence the light weight) in these chargers can of course mean an increased risk of fire or component failure (which could again lead to electrocution). Low-end aftermarket chargers for anything are hot garbage. The only thing worse than these knockoff laptop chargers are the handful of cheap/free knockoff Samsung and Apple chargers I disassembled (let's not go there...)
