Well, I was expecting a little more but hey, it's still awesome. It needs more than 3lb of boost tho. Issue is, they have a giant turbo on an engine that doesn't Rev. They need a little dinky turbo that flattens out at like 4k rpm. Then it'd spool faster and would have so much more lower end. It'd be better overall.

@Jupiter__001_3 жыл бұрын
@@welloffthepace3127 Because most carbs run with atmospheric pressure so they don't work properly when you give them boost. You can tune one for a higher pressure than one bar, but that isn't helpful when the boost is varying a lot like on a turbo. For that application you need either a pressurised diaphragm carburettor (which is considered an early fuel injection system), or proper fuel injection either mechanical or electronic. The diaphragm-based carburettor is used on many WWII aircraft with superchargers.

@paul_1094 жыл бұрын
On one hand, the turbo can take damage when it's working with air-fuel mixture (which is why the carb ist mostly between turbo and intake), but the carb itself works better when it has normal atmospheric pressure outside und the turbo sucks the air through it instead of pushing it through the carb. The way the guys made it, the carb is going to work pretty well, but the turbo will suffer. That's why there are so few cars with carb and turbo

No need for an intercooler with a carb - the fuel evaporative cooling takes care of that. But you are probable getting carburetor iceing because you have the carb in front of the turbo. Best to either get a specialist blow through carb, or build a sealed box (+ high pressure fuel pump) so you can blow through the carb that will help solve the iceing problem.

Martyn Watson it can’t be a good thing to have the intake hoses collapsing under vacuum. Also carb after turbo would avoid the icing they’re experiencing.
@1Longranger4 жыл бұрын
Back in the 80's I had few draw through turbo/carb set ups. The intake piping was all solid aluminium. What happen is that when the manifold is under high vacuum the turbo impellor is almost freespooling (it isn't drawing much air, which takes energy). That results in higher turbo shaft rpm's. Works well with the side benefit of charge cooling. Primitive, but it worked. I also ran a 30% water/methanol injection upstream of the carb. This does cause impellor leading edge erosion over time though.

I have a om617 5cyl diesel in a 86 Nissan "hardbody" 4wd , certainly not a performance vehicle by any means but she's damn good at climbing a path up the mountain for gathering firewood and incredibly reliable....kinda a random comment I know but I had to look up the om606 you posted about , Merc engines are extremely rare in the southeast US . Idk if they are all built like the 617 but that thing is hard to kill and super simple.

Kyllä käy huonosti. Korjaisivat nyt ensin käyntiongelman että käy kaikilla pytyillä ennenkuin virittävät.

@@leebrooks7467 Old school from the 80's, lots of turbo cars where draw through back then, totally shit

PiezPiedPy thanks for the info man lol

actually, draw through carbs work amazingly well, and you dont need an intercooler whatsoever. ice cold intake charge.

@@PiezPiedPy totally shit because they used shit parts. do it today, and it hauls ass.

You need real silicone couplers and T bolt clamps to hold a decent amount of boost. I used to run 20psi in my old 1995 Eclipse gst turbo and it would blow the factory intercooler piping right off and stall on me mid race lol I would have to pull over tighten everything back down jump back in and back on the road😂 Good times!!
