couldn't they offset each block by the thickness of one rod and put rods from each block next ot each other on the a custom crankshaft? Then change the timing of one of the head by 90 degrees. That would allow them to keep the heads and camshaft stock. Why do you think it wasn't done this way? Or am I getting something wrong, geometrically?

You need to index the camshaft on the second block after you turn the crankshaft 90°. One of your cams is totally and completely off. One set of pistons is running and keeping the engine turning over that’s why the other side is blowing flames. You will also probably be way better off running two separate distributors.

Basically each block would be one half a crank case and the adaptor just a flange to allow you to bolt them together around the outside .. put together like a VW.. not bad idea.... It might be easier to do it with a push rod engine because you can flip one block over and then use the same camshaft to drive full of sets of pushrods? Lol 😂
