Filling the radiator with diesel fuel - what will happen?

i had a drag racing 4 wheeler with a snowmobile engine once, blew a radiator line and needed fluid but only had 2 gallons of iced tea. it actually worked quite well lol.

I overheated my 64 dodge on the way to work. It was on a Monday so I had my beer cooler in the back still. No ice but full of water. Perfect. Nope, not enough. So I sacrificed a half dozen or so beer and put that in the rad. It got me to the shop no problem. Had to pull the rad to send out for repair. Hot beer and antifreeze makes for the most disgusting smell ever. But it got me where I needed to go.

Electrosol dishwasher powder is what we used to degrease systems when a trans or oil cooler let go. Just fill and repeat till clean. Usually took 3-4 refills, running clean water between. If the water showed an oil film, just add a cup of detergent again and take a ride for another 20 minutes. BTW, that was recommended to us by both Alison transmissions and Detroit diesel shops.

What I have had great success with in the past for blown oil coolers is dishwasher soap. It doesn't foam like dawn will. I have used it in everything from 3406 Cats to the newer Cummins X15 engines. And a LOT of gas engines, mainly Chevys that have the oil cooler in the tank of the radiator. Give it a shot sometime. Works very well.

I suspect the best option for this would be a product with an emulsifier in it. Dish washing soap has an emulsifier, it’s literally designed to mix oil and water. The issue is the surfactants make it very, very bubbly. The foam will be a problem. Like putting dish soap in a dish washer or laundry washing machine. Maybe laundry soap would work? Gasoline in the cooling system could get very exciting if you blew a head gasket and started pumping combustion into the cooling system.

As far as the bug cleaner goes, I have always been told it had amino acids in it to help to dissolve the pests parts. As for degreasers or solvents, people should be careful since there is a lot of rubber hoses that the solvent can dissolve. This is one of those jobs that while a quick one-for-all method seems like a good idea, it’s just not entirely feedings. As always gentlemen, good job! You always make it seem so easy! But the one thing I have learned through the years is it takes incredible skills to make it seem like anyone can do it!

The best way to remove the antifreeze (water) and oil emulsion is to drain the system and put in one cup of Wisk (Persil) liquid laundry detergent and fill with water. Leave the radiator cap off and idle engine until warm with the heater set to hot. Cool, drain, install fresh water and repeat until you no longer get suds. This will also remove the dreaded rusty coolant from Mopar vehicles.

Any non foaming soap should work, dish or laundry. Some of the early commercial powder soap products were sold for both uses.

I think more important than breaking it up is breaking it's cohesion to the cooling system itself. The grease wants to stick to metal plastic basically anything but water. The soap from what I understand breaks the bond from materials to the grease/emulsion which allows the water pressure or air pressure to push it out of the cooling system. This characteristic of soap is actually what helps remove grease and bacteria from your skin when washing.

Except diesel isn't highly flammable.. You can throw a match into diesel and it won't catch fire, you have to compress it to the point of ignition, or have something get up to a high enough temp to ignite it..

Most people don't know that. There are quite a few fuels that won't burn unless heated to the point of ignition or in a mist. Diesel, Kerosene, Jet fuel, even nitromethane will put out a match if dropped in it.

A buddy of mine who works on diesels says that they fill cooling systems with a really thin oil in place of antifreeze. I don't know what it's called but appearently volvo uses it stock now. It eliminates all freezing since it's oil based and cools more effectively since antifreeze doesn't actually cool.

Yeah, some applications use waterless coolant based on propylene glycol. "Evans" is a popular brand. It's especially for hot-running cases where boilover is a problem, since it just won't do it. A lot of motorcyclists and dirt bikists run it.

7:52 - I once use a bottle of dollar-store dish washing soap to flush a cooling system that was full of oil emulsion and Dex-Cool sludge. Drained what I could,flushed it with the hose for a bit,and refilled it with the full bottle of soap and water. Let it idle for like 30 minutes,and then drained and flushed it with the hose for a good while. It worked great!

When I last blew the head gasket on my Cummins diesel. I replaced my radiator and used powder dishwashing soap to flush through about 15 times and clean it out. I also pulled the freeze plugs out when I redid the head gasket so I could stick my whole arm into the engine and pull the Emulsion out from between the cylinders. Edit: each one of my flushes was around 5 gallons...

Use L-11 Degreaser. It was designed to take oil and transmission fluid out of radiators and cooling systems. Pour it in, warm up the engine, flush it out. It works 100% of the time. It's available on eBay.

My diesel has a fuel heater built in, I make my own diesel and use gasoline to thin it out. I've found that if I add too much it makes the boiling point too low and when I shut it off hot it will vapor lock in the fuel lines from boiling.

That bug cleaner is perfect, it's a degreaser I think, and it did exactly what it did on my car. "Water" on the bottom and some oily stuff on the surface. The degreaser is perfect because it does not create foam and can be taken up to 70-90°C without damaging anything inside the cooling system. But you need 2 flushes of degreaser and another 2-3 flushes with normal water (don't let it go over 60°C) and then you can do a final flush with DEIONIZED water and then add normal coolant.

Cheap white vinegar would be funny since they are flushing a water / oil emulsion, it has funky mixing properties with oil and changes the boiling temp of water.

Vinegar is not that good with aluminium stuff, after the 'treatment' the coolant develops a coroded, rusty look, I've tried it on several cars and they needed a flush and refill with extra coolant mix after the first batch. I wouldn't recommend it, perhaps only for older systems with iron and copper.

Vinegar is safe with aluminium, here we use it all the time to descale espresso coffe brewers. Pretty much does nothing to aluminium, maybe creates a grayish oxide if you leave it there for a week. Aluminium is quite corrosion resistant against acids. Alkali substances however, like NaOH or other emulsifying degreasers degrade aluminium, so while they are great for cleaning this stuff, do not leave it in there for any prolonged period and wash it off thoroughly. My friend left an alkali cleaning solution in their car, drove the car with that normally, but not quite for long: all the water passageways in the cyl. head broke into the nearby intake and exhaust ports, nearby valve seats, and practically everywhere. It was an oldish car, in the old timer age, but he couldn't find a replacement cyl. head so he had to scrap the whole car eventually, all because of this rookie mistake.

@@gabiold Sad to hear about your friends' mishap, don't know what to say about either solution, I personally tried the vinegar cleaning solution in 2 cars, one was a bit older and had a simpler cooling system, yet still aluminium dominant, and they both developed the same symptoms shortly after, the coolant got all rusty looking even if the antifreeze was coloured. And I only did a warmup with the vinegar with 2-3 flushes after, so I can't recommend it on cars. After replacing the antifreeze with new one it worked well though, but I got the same result with compressed air cleaning, it's faster and leaves less distilled water waste.

@@killerdinamo08 I don't say that it works well with cars which has iron, aluminium and older ones have copper even in the same coolant circuit, but with only just aluminium, it works for descaling. In heterogenous environment electrochemical corrosion might happen, even if the metals are connected with rubber hoses, because ions might form. It is not good for other cleaning (degreasing) since it is an acid, and oils usually soulible in bases and detergents. But I am not a chemist, far from it actually. We have a product here, called Akra K2, it is a emulsifying degreaser, quite effective I have to say, and I successfully cleaned coolant circuits and tank with it (as well, apart from other oily parts of the engine), but I washed through the whole system with a hose after it. Btw. I am not English, I used the word alkali in my previous post, but might be that's not the correct term for the opposite of acid, it might be base (ph > 7), correct me if I am wrong...

I did this in the late 1970s with a pickup that had a cracked head that coolant got into the exhaust. I filled the cooling system with Diesel fuel. Everything went fine for a couple of weeks then the diesel fuel ate the radiator hose and the hose blew and hot diesel fuel was all over the engine smoking, fuel covered the windshield, I was lucky it didn't go up in flames, LOL! Now too chean the cooling system out use automatic dishwashing detergent, not regular hand washing dish detergent. The automatic dishwashing detergent doesn't foam and suds.

I had some issues on my VW Polo 2007 about the cooling system, it had like a cream inside but not like you guys had in the video. So I firstly tried to have the gardening hose running constant water through the whole cooling system but the cream was sticking to the walls of the hoses. Then 2nd time I added 2L of normal kitchen degreaser (the one in bottle spray) and that removed it so good, repeated the process and have it warm up to 60-80°C. It sort of cleaned all of the cream, but now it still hase some of it in the expansion tank. I will have to do a test for emissions to see if they get into the cooling system, because the oil is not getting in, as after 8,000-10,000 km, when I change the oil in the engine, I still have the same quantity that it went in. So there has to be emissions going inside (it's a petrol car). Your engine is so simple! Mine has so much bullshit to it, but compared to a 2020-2022 car, I still have a pretty simple engine, which is so good.

We had a floor drain, that we'd relived ourselves for most of the winter in(,saving a trip to the bathroom) well springtime came, and whew wholegrain smelled like piss! My dad worked for a farmer in the early 60s and he used straight diesel in the radiator of his D9 cat dozer. Never used anything else. Worked the huy made dozens of ponds and lakes,and had a contract with the county to push snow so it didn't freeze up either. Radiator flush you can get from the auto parts store is usually a strong base that gets diluted when you add it to your coolant system. You shouldn't leave it in for more than a day or two because it'll dissolve some of the aluminum from the block and the radiator making those parts extra clean.

Add some water, soda ash (aka sodium carbonate), some dish soap, and some very little alcohol. The soda ash and soap will break down the oil into the water even further and the alcohol stops the soap from foaming. And it isn't harsh on the hoses either. The clumps will disappear and dilute into the water. I used this daily on greasy shop floors.

Isopropyl alcohol water mix 60/40. It's expensive, yes, but it works the first flush. General guidance - Please NEVER breathe fumes from cooling system, always wear mask, always wear gloves (nothing to do with the Isopropyl alcohol). Cheers!

If it is a brass radiator, take the tanks off and clean them, and then use compressed air and punch rods to get the excess out. Then boil the core in CLR or water with dish soap, rinse, repeat. Alternatively, instead of boiling, put the core in a vat of gasoline and let it set overnight. Rinse, blow out, and repeat as necessary. Compressed air for all, including the block and heads, so that there isn't any diesel left in it (seeing that it too will try to emulsify with coolant due to the oil base, just not as horrifically).

I seriously doubt it. Oils are not impressed by acids. Oils are acids. Destroy the acid by using Ammoniak and you will have a degreaser.

Best stuff to clean out the motor and radiator is this stuff called Goof off concrete cleaner.. yes thats correct believe it or not but I used half a bottle in the radiator and started the car and ran it for 20min and that stuff cleaned everything like bran new!!! I then flushed it out with the water hose real good then filled it up with water and baking soda to Nutralize it and ran it for the same time and flushed it with water and put in new thermostat and fluid and its been great ever since. That cleaner is by far the best cleaner flush I've ever used to clean my system!! Yes I will use it again unless someone knows something I don't to not use it..

I work for semi truck dealership and when i go an issue with mixed oil and coolant on system, i add to coolant system degreaser, water and diesel fuel and run the truck for about 15 minutes with heater on and then drain coolant system and then keep do the same thing until to see the mix come out with no oil, after that need to clean the system from diesel fuel because is oily, need to just add water degreaser and again run the truck for about 15 minutes or so with heater on and drain and keep doing this process until to see no more diesel come out.

Doubt u will read this but here is more explaination of the boiling points of water vs the oils mentioned (gasoline, kerosene, diesel). On the molecular scale the boiling point of a liquid is determined by the forces holding the molecules together vs pulling them apart. Thermal energy pulls the molecules apart whereas various molecular forces will hold the molecules together. A molecule of water H2O experiences hydrogen bonding, an intermolecular force (between the Hydrogen in one water molecule and the Oxygen in another), which is much stronger than the forces experiences by molecules that do not form hydrogen bonds such as gasoline.

Trisodium phosphate Is the best to remove oily residue from a cooling system. Warm up the the engine, have it run for 10-20 minutes then flush the system with water. Repeat the process if necessary.

I've had the oil cooler brake and I didn't know. I decided to just run engine oil instead of coolant. Ran the car like that for like 5000 km. I attached a hose from the expansion tank to the oil pan so spewed oil can return back.

A farm tractor is a far cry from an automobile, especially a farm tractor built in 1938. However, I’ve been running oil as coolant in my John Deere B for over a year now due to a cracked block. No issues whatsoever. I even made a video about it.

Automatic transmission fluid works well as a cleaner/solvent to get the big stuff out of the cooling system and then use water, dawn soap mixed with vinegar and salt afterwards. Than to flush out the soapy Dawn run the engine with only vinegar, water and salt. Then when you’re all done flush it out with water as much as you can. After all that you should have a very clean engine and heat exchangers. I would drive the car for some miles without antifreeze and flush it over and over again till you think it’s completely clean and drained. Then add your antifreeze/distilled water mix. When doing this make sure you keep an eye on the temperatures and remove the thermostat. Remember that oil floats on water so when you drain the system every time the oil/sludge will come out last. You want to get the engine to operating temperature, but don’t let it overheat

A FRIEND OF MINE HAD A 1966 CHEVROLET 6 CYLINDER. IT DEVELOPED A LEAK FROM THE RADIATOR INTO THE COOLING SYSTEM! HE CHECKED THE BLOCK AND HEAD FOR CRACKS AND FOUND NONE , AND REPLACED THE HEAD GASKET! STILL THE LEAK CONTINUED AS BEFORE! EVENTUALLY HE DRAINED ALL THE WATER OUT AND FILLED THE RADIATOR WITH THE SAME OIL IN THE CRANKCASE!! IN CASE OF OVERHEATING, HE ROUTED THE RADIATOR OVERFLOW HOSE INTO THE ROCKER ARM COVER! WHEN THE RADIATOR WAS LOW AND THE CRANKCASE OVERFULL HE HAD A VALVE ON A OIL PRESSURE PORT AND A TUBE GOING TO THE RADIATOR! DURING THE SUMMER HE TOOK THE THERMOSTAT OUT TO PREVENT OVERHEATING ! HE RAN THE CAR WITH THIS ARRANGEMENT FOR 3 MORE YEARS!

Considering that the average cooling system runs around 16 pounds of pressure. If you start exceeding that pressure with straight air the first point of failure will be the radiator and or the heater core. Just drain your coolant and see what happens. The water pump has an impeller on the back so it will move the air. And it's gonna overheat. Add you air pump or turbo or whatever, it's still going to overheat. The liquid in a coolant system moves the heat from the engine to the rad, where air moving across the fins removes some of the excess heat from the coolant and then reintroduces back in the engine. Air alone will never cool an engine that is designed to use coolant. Never.

once used dirty water from a ditch from the side of a freeway to get me home. damage was already done as I drive 10miles with the temp gauge in the red then the needle drop. got another 6 months out the car before the head went. I was driving and then disappeared into a fog cloud. :D

Maybe also try some sort of lightly acidic product, and/or see if someone makes an industrial sized ultrasonic cleaner big enough to put the entire radiator in.

I had a coolant leak and only had urine and beer to fill it up with - so we had to keep drinking beer until we pissed enough to fill it up. We weren’t going to waste the beer since it would come out as piss soon anyway! Fixed the hose with gaffer tape and it lasted until we got home

Just use detergent , remove the thermostat , open the heater circuit and continuously flush with plain water till it runs clear.

It would be expensive , but using ATF (automatic transmission fluid) would likely clean it out in addition it would thin the diesel out enough to clean it all out of the system. Here in America any good diesel mechanic will tell you to add a quart of ATF once a month to your CAR or PICK UP TRUCK fuel tank and then add the diesel. The ATF will thin out the diesel just enough that it will help to clean the injectors....just an old mechanic trick

first thought : notting mush boiling point of diesel is about 2 times higher than water , and it whon't freeze though it will gell at temperatures below 10°F (-12°C) but can still be pumped around in that state might affect rubber hoses and gaskets (desolving them) and probably lubricate bearing of the waterpump in case of a headgasket leak the engine might start smoking if the diesel enters the combustion chamber or thin the engine oil if it breaks between channels (still better than water in the oil) , there IS i bigger risk of starting a fire as for desolving the water oil mix : soap should work it mixes with water and desolves fat

Detergents with anti-foaming agents in them would de-guck the system nicely, though with careful use of Fairy liquid, you could use that to flush it out if you don't over-dose with it and cause the foaming problem, as when it becomes saturated with oily stuff, it doesn't foam up, so under-dosing and repeated flushing would make it an effective DIY cleaner...

I knew a guy who had a great service station and he smoked cigarettes and pumped gas to customer care and trucks for a good oh 4 decades+. He never had a fire explosion 💥 or mishap of any type. Chemically emulsified oil can be removed by heating the water from 150 to 220° F. However, this can become expensive. Evaporators remove the water and leave the oil. Also might try salt water.

funny thing about diesel and it's working principle, even tho it is fuel it is not like gasoline or kerosene it is a compression type fuel so in other terms it requires compression to combust and gasoline needs a certain catalyst to combust aka. an spark plug so basically you can run diesel in the cooling tank to flush out the dirt and grease that is hapening here

Try use GTL which is not oily, its gas to liquids and is used instead of diesel because its clear like water and doesnt smell

This reminds me of the experiment having never quite been done : The same fluid for motor oil, gear oil, coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid and fuel. WD-40 with some motor oil added?

WD-40 is mainly kerosene, with no lubricating properties at all. It's meant to be used as a surface anti corrosive agent.
