Well, it was a combination of rust, dirt, grease, sound deadening, and paint. just removing sound deadening would have been at least half the weight I would reckon; as I've stripped a car's interior before and learned just how much everything weighed.
@bitkarekАй бұрын
sound deadening is pretty heavy, its the first thing you do if you build a race car out of normal car.
@keithyinger3326Ай бұрын
I guess would have been a lot of it is sound deadening material weight and all of the stuff they stripped off from the underside of the car. It may not seem like much fine sand and dirt but over that much area, the weight of all that sand stuck to the dirt and the frame can weigh quite a bit. Ever try and pick up a 5-gallon bucket full of sand? It weighs quite a bit.
@SilvaDreamsАй бұрын
@@bitkarekMost of that weight wea definately the sound deadening material which looked like tar and that shit is heavy.
@user-oe1mb9hu9iАй бұрын
Would be interesting to know what you thought of the car you stripped driving it on a normal road ? The answer is; UNBEARABLE. Sounds like you are inside a tin biscuit box with marbles inside. The ONLY cushioning is the tyres. Impossible NOT to have all that sound deadening stuff if you want a daily driver. So although we all knew what the result would be; a far more interesting topic would be how to reduce the noise level of a tin box WITHOUT adding too much weight and WHAT to do it with.

Probably the best use case i have seen of one of these. Probably way more expensive in labour and running costs than an acid dip or sandblast though. But significantly less space required and less messy. Small car restoration businesses would benefit from it.

It is probably cheaper in the long term than sandblasting. It doesn't consume sandblasting media, only needs electricity. Doesn't require a sand-blasting box. Though the possible instant eye destruction is a scary part of it.

That was surprising. When they were getting ready to hoist the car up for the second time I guessed at 30kg based on roughly how much new sound deadening and 4 or 5L of primer/paint would weigh. Either the paint is REALLY thick on Ladas, there's more sound deadening than I was picturing, or that ones lost an extra 12kg of rust. :D
@pauljensen5699Ай бұрын
More paint = more rust proofing Makes sense, given we saw how much the car rusted.
@ljubomirculibrk4097Ай бұрын
Perhaps there was a Zinc coat on top of the metal, it evaporates and burns easy. Zinc shakes known to welders when you weld zinc protected tubes-parts...
@Reman1975Ай бұрын
@@ljubomirculibrk4097 Interesting idea, but I'm thinking it's unlikely. Zinc's a pretty good conductor of heat, so it would take a fair bit more power to flash vaporise that than it takes to just burn off paint and rust. If you watch the process they're having to make a couple of passes to get all the paint off, so I doubt they were pushing enough energy into it to melt any zinc that may have been there. Also, if the power was cranked up high enough to vaporize galvanising I'd expect to see the same tell tail yellow deposits you get on the surface when you don't clean galvanising from sheet metal well enough before welding.
@PrebleStreetRecordsАй бұрын
If you let the body panels develop “sugar rust” like that, and then immerse it in boiling water for an hour or so, it’ll convert to the black iron oxide, which is commonly called “bluing” on firearms. It’s a stable protective coating that doesn’t add any mass like paint.

This is not just the paint. This car has been painted in the past. You could see it when you scrape the paint. Most of the dents were smoothened with a hammer. However, the bare metal shows many dents which have been covered with filler that was polished before painting. Many rust holes were filled with a filler as well. And you have the residues on the engine itself.
