Well, it was a combination of rust, dirt, grease, sound deadening, and paint. just removing sound deadening would have been at least half the weight I would reckon; as I've stripped a car's interior before and learned just how much everything weighed.
@bitkarek

I guess would have been a lot of it is sound deadening material weight and all of the stuff they stripped off from the underside of the car. It may not seem like much fine sand and dirt but over that much area, the weight of all that sand stuck to the dirt and the frame can weigh quite a bit. Ever try and pick up a 5-gallon bucket full of sand? It weighs quite a bit.

Would be interesting to know what you thought of the car you stripped driving it on a normal road ? The answer is; UNBEARABLE. Sounds like you are inside a tin biscuit box with marbles inside. The ONLY cushioning is the tyres. Impossible NOT to have all that sound deadening stuff if you want a daily driver. So although we all knew what the result would be; a far more interesting topic would be how to reduce the noise level of a tin box WITHOUT adding too much weight and WHAT to do it with.

That was surprising. When they were getting ready to hoist the car up for the second time I guessed at 30kg based on roughly how much new sound deadening and 4 or 5L of primer/paint would weigh. Either the paint is REALLY thick on Ladas, there's more sound deadening than I was picturing, or that ones lost an extra 12kg of rust. :D

Perhaps there was a Zinc coat on top of the metal, it evaporates and burns easy. Zinc shakes known to welders when you weld zinc protected tubes-parts...
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 Ай бұрын
@@ljubomirculibrk4097 Interesting idea, but I'm thinking it's unlikely. Zinc's a pretty good conductor of heat, so it would take a fair bit more power to flash vaporise that than it takes to just burn off paint and rust. If you watch the process they're having to make a couple of passes to get all the paint off, so I doubt they were pushing enough energy into it to melt any zinc that may have been there. Also, if the power was cranked up high enough to vaporize galvanising I'd expect to see the same tell tail yellow deposits you get on the surface when you don't clean galvanising from sheet metal well enough before welding.

If you let the body panels develop “sugar rust” like that, and then immerse it in boiling water for an hour or so, it’ll convert to the black iron oxide, which is commonly called “bluing” on firearms. It’s a stable protective coating that doesn’t add any mass like paint.

In the mid 60s, when they actually made cars with heart and soul that didn't cost as much as a house, you could order a '66 Pontiac GTO to be used for drag racing with no undercoating, no rear seat, etc. Every bit of weight saved helps.

awesome video, now you must polish the metal to perfection like a mirror! I've always wanted a car like that...

Two suggestions: - Build a rear engined Lada; - Build a petrol-electric or diesel-electric Lada! (Not hybrid just something similar to a diesel-electric locomotive.) Spasibo

My suggestion, make it the quietest Lada ever. Heavy sound deadening material everywhere realistically possible and neoprene sound deadening on top where ever possible. Weigh the car after that. After that is done put all the interior back and drive the car and see how quiet and luxurious it feels.

Man, this is Bonkers!!! And I like it A LOT!! Interesting technique: Laser, let it rust to show up the deep rust pockets! Wasn't expecting that to see! What shows that sometimes unwanted stuff is turning out to be interesting advantage! Awesome stuff , My Friend, Will watch more , and subscibe.I loved the video about inertia starting motors you showed a while ago!

I do have a suggestion... You should rust blue the whole thing, like you would a rifle barrel. 😁 Maybe just let it get surface rust, rub the whole thing back with steel wool, rust some more, then hit it with a high pressure steam cleaner? Then oil it, and weigh it 😁

This is not just the paint. This car has been painted in the past. You could see it when you scrape the paint. Most of the dents were smoothened with a hammer. However, the bare metal shows many dents which have been covered with filler that was polished before painting. Many rust holes were filled with a filler as well. And you have the residues on the engine itself.

That’s nuts, amazing what lasers can do. This channel full of surprises demonstrating all sort of things on Ladas. Excellent. - Does Russia have Lemons races ?

After removing the paint, the effectiveness of the anti-rust paints/priming waxes could be tested.

You should set it outside for a month or two, let it rust as much as it will, then weight it before and after stripping the rust to see how much metal is removed. That would be interesting.

That's actually pretty impressive! 92.5 lbs is a lot for a small car like the Lada. Just imagine how much is on a big vehicle.

What about sealing the “raw steel” ? What about applying say fish oil to prevent rust? Even if it was weekly ? Or a coat of sealer, primer or clear? With the weight reduced you should see how fast you can make it go?? Maybe a ceramic coated aluminium crank? That was very interesting ! Great content love what you guys do! All the best from Sth Australia!🇦🇺 ✌️👍😎

For the bottom i watched doing it with dry ice and for removing inside isolations and looked much better in my opinion as end result.Also you dont need to be careful for any plastic parts under the car since will clean them too without breaking them. Which one you think is better ?

I'm looking at how much Bondo came off the car as well as the other stuff. Ideas for what to do with the car? Ok, find a really strong engine and transmission, and stuff them in there. Maybe see about building the ultimate snow runner. All wheel drive, lift it a couple inches on the suspension, bigger tires, more fuel capacity, roll cage, lighting, heater, and everything that can make it fun off-road.
