Well, it was a combination of rust, dirt, grease, sound deadening, and paint. just removing sound deadening would have been at least half the weight I would reckon; as I've stripped a car's interior before and learned just how much everything weighed.
@bitkarek

sound deadening is pretty heavy, its the first thing you do if you build a race car out of normal car.
@keithyinger3326

I guess would have been a lot of it is sound deadening material weight and all of the stuff they stripped off from the underside of the car. It may not seem like much fine sand and dirt but over that much area, the weight of all that sand stuck to the dirt and the frame can weigh quite a bit. Ever try and pick up a 5-gallon bucket full of sand? It weighs quite a bit.

Would be interesting to know what you thought of the car you stripped driving it on a normal road ? The answer is; UNBEARABLE. Sounds like you are inside a tin biscuit box with marbles inside. The ONLY cushioning is the tyres. Impossible NOT to have all that sound deadening stuff if you want a daily driver. So although we all knew what the result would be; a far more interesting topic would be how to reduce the noise level of a tin box WITHOUT adding too much weight and WHAT to do it with.

Probably the best use case i have seen of one of these. Probably way more expensive in labour and running costs than an acid dip or sandblast though. But significantly less space required and less messy. Small car restoration businesses would benefit from it.

It is probably cheaper in the long term than sandblasting. It doesn't consume sandblasting media, only needs electricity. Doesn't require a sand-blasting box. Though the possible instant eye destruction is a scary part of it.

If you let the body panels develop “sugar rust” like that, and then immerse it in boiling water for an hour or so, it’ll convert to the black iron oxide, which is commonly called “bluing” on firearms. It’s a stable protective coating that doesn’t add any mass like paint.

That was surprising. When they were getting ready to hoist the car up for the second time I guessed at 30kg based on roughly how much new sound deadening and 4 or 5L of primer/paint would weigh. Either the paint is REALLY thick on Ladas, there's more sound deadening than I was picturing, or that ones lost an extra 12kg of rust. :D

Perhaps there was a Zinc coat on top of the metal, it evaporates and burns easy. Zinc shakes known to welders when you weld zinc protected tubes-parts...
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 5 ай бұрын
@@ljubomirculibrk4097 Interesting idea, but I'm thinking it's unlikely. Zinc's a pretty good conductor of heat, so it would take a fair bit more power to flash vaporise that than it takes to just burn off paint and rust. If you watch the process they're having to make a couple of passes to get all the paint off, so I doubt they were pushing enough energy into it to melt any zinc that may have been there. Also, if the power was cranked up high enough to vaporize galvanising I'd expect to see the same tell tail yellow deposits you get on the surface when you don't clean galvanising from sheet metal well enough before welding.

I'm looking at how much Bondo came off the car as well as the other stuff. Ideas for what to do with the car? Ok, find a really strong engine and transmission, and stuff them in there. Maybe see about building the ultimate snow runner. All wheel drive, lift it a couple inches on the suspension, bigger tires, more fuel capacity, roll cage, lighting, heater, and everything that can make it fun off-road.

Here's a video idea I've never seen done: what if you over bored an engine cylinder and instead of honing (cross hatching) the cylinder walls you rust blued them? Apparently rust blued iron is protected from normal rust if it has previously had oil applied to it's surface, so it must be somewhat retaining it. You could also try applying bluing solutions to this Lada, since they might make it look quite unique while retaining the reduced body weight. (although the color will not be uniform since bluing isn't consistent)

You can also use dry ice to easily remove the material stuck to the floorpan, it will freeze and it will crack away clean.

I'm thinking when you got rid of the rust you also got rid of some of the iron that was with it. This would explain the "excess" loss.

I noticed that it causes the body panels to warp quite a bit. You can see this easily in the time lapses. I imagine all the warping just gives you more bodywork to do than it's worth. That or you could turn the heat down to not overheat the metal.

Electricity is very cheap in russia

In Russia electricity is pretty cheap, yes but they are a special case. They live in Novosibirsk, the world capital of coin miners. Electricity there is dirty cheap because of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations in that region, so since there are not so many factories left, they subsidize locals with very cheap surplus electricity.

The metal barely gets warm in the process. I dont know much about Lada, but i assume they do not warp if left outside in the sun.

@@JohnDoe-qt9ci Just look at the roof when they show the before and after. You can clearly see it is "creased". Also in the last shot if you check out the doors, they are the same.

hi im from sa (south africa) cars here have little rust and are well taken care of that said losing all that wieght that plus the super nice high compression engine you all did a few videos back i will love to see the car fully striped to every part and fully cleaned to the bear metal then a really light coating of clear to be applyed to it all to see how much faster it will be from a stock car because sometimes the weight of a car matters much more than the power it has

This is not just the paint. This car has been painted in the past. You could see it when you scrape the paint. Most of the dents were smoothened with a hammer. However, the bare metal shows many dents which have been covered with filler that was polished before painting. Many rust holes were filled with a filler as well. And you have the residues on the engine itself.

Звукоизоляционный слой тоже очень хорош, снимается сухим льдом. Видел на другом канале.. Кажется, "Chris Fix"🤔 Но я понятия не имею, насколько он дорогой.. Sound proof layer is also very good, removable with Dry Ice. Saw it on another channel.. I think "Chris Fix"🤔 But I have no idea how pricey it is..
