Here's it is!! All wrapped up and running like a champ. I had a fun time finishing up the MPFI conversion on my 1991 Civic Wagon DX. I love how the car feels now and with a few more "breathing" upgrades I think it'll really open up and be a fun little machine!

So what do you all think of the MPFI gains!?!

Jon Widmer great job reminds me of my 88 ef l sedan I had. but I ran same si trans , d16y8 intake manifold and throttle body and dc header. made a good difference in power . better throttle response. but I eventually swapped in a d16a6 and converted to obd1 than sadly had to sell the car

Another cool addition to your channel Jon. I appreciate the detail and the split screen comparison you did to show us the difference in performance from the manifold swap. Awesome! It'll be interesting to see what kind of improvements the future intake and exhaust mods will bring when you dyno it again.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Britt!! I was so curious myself and had to do the split screen. I've done a handful of MPFI swaps and never knew what power or difference it made. Might not seem like tons but it's essentially just an intake manifold upgrade but also allows for ease of more mods, and also doing future engine swaps. The wiring is done for any obd0 b18 or b20, and to add an obd0 B16A you'll just add 3 more wires to the Ecu (knock sensor, vtec pressure switch, and vtec solenoid). So worth it if any Ef owners plan on upgrading!

Wow! This was SUPER interesting, and encouraging, too! I cannot believe the mileage on your car! And, to think that it still makes just as much power as it did when new, this is incredible. I doubt that any modern car -- 26 years from now -- will be able to brag the same way. Honda of the 90s, TRULY built incredibly reliable machines, that also are a riot of fun to drive. Truth be told, I feel relieved and foolish after watching this video. See, I have just a tick over 100,000 on my '91 Si. Everyone around me says that this is low, "for its age." Next to YOUR mileage, though, it has me thinking that this engine of mine is still just a baby, with lots and lots of life still left in it. It'll probably outlast *me*. (I keep on top of all maintenance, and I use only synthetic oil. I will be switching to synthetic Rotella T6 at my next oil change, so I expect to enjoy many more years of motoring.) That's the relief part of the equation. I feel foolish, when I think that I was worried about how much more life I have in this D16A6. Haha. I didn't need to worry at all, it would seem. I am learning so much about my car, thanks to you, Jon. I will continue to eat up any videos you post in the future.

Baddest Burrito Very awesome!! Your motor is fresh out of the box compared to mine! As long as you maintain it, and as meticulously as you are you shouldn't have any problems at all! I'm glad you're learning about your car, it'll make you love it that much more! You'll probably never sell it now! Lol

You'll be set with those tires on those wheels! A good Miata friend was telling me that a lot of miata guys run the Re71's because they have to stay in the 200TW category, but these perform more closer to those of a 100TW. I didn't know this but will like to try a set out once I wear out my NT01's. Let me know how they feel and how you like them once you've beaten on them! 😀

Man,Honda has so many different engine setups and variations it's crazy. They're all over the place with part numbers like PR3,PR4,PM7,PM6,P08,PLC,....I sell auto parts in Jamaica so it's been cool learning the various part numbers from different Japanese makes especially Honda. Theirs is very logical and they make it easy to get items like head gaskets,water pumps and timing belts. As I'm sure you've come across all sorts of technicalities with these. It's fascinating though.

awesome, I've been curious about the gains made for a long time. makes me reconsider spending the time to mpfi my daily ef. one thing I'd suggest is maybe 2 1/4 exhaust, 2.5" is pretty overkill for a lower rpm non-vtec and sohc. Might hurt the low/mid rpm power.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
90ED6LSV agreed after reading this about the exhaust, that's a good point. The 10-11 hp that came from the manifold swap made it feel like a completely different car. Are you thinking of not doing an mpfi swap now because of the minimal hp gain?
@CatDaddyTuning
@CatDaddyTuning 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the end result! I happily rock DPFI with a straight/center exit 2.3" pipe off of the cat (with a muffler after the cat) and just changing the exhaust made the car feel 2x as fast but the MPFI is a real 10hp gain! On these small engine that's really huge improvement for sure.

Jon, I've watched this build series a plethora of times and I believe I am ready to take on the conversion myself, only problem is parts for these cars around here or the "ef" are very hard to come by(I'm the only guy in town with ef). I had one chance to meet up with some sketchy dude off our most local honda page, and the stuff he wanted to sell me weren't even for an ef... on the same note, I love watching your scrap/junkyard vid's! Instead of an MPFI swap, I put a Weber 32/36 on the DPFI manifold (I milled out the plenum to accommodate the airflow of a 2 barrel), used a 1984 civic distributor, and I chopped out my ECU. It blows the DPFI setup out of the water, and it is pretty competitive to the MPFI swap, even with my 4 speed.

I'd like to see how much more hp your wagovan would make with an exhaust intake and retune. I miss my old ex sedan EF I got lucky and it had the MPFI from the factory. I recently put a short ram on my ek to me it feels like it made a difference in response it use to lag alot before the short ram helped it. How much did the dyno tune run you?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
EK Frank $85 at this spot. I definitely think a short ram and better breathing exhaust will help free up some HP. I'm pretty sure I'll do a follow up once I complete the exhaust and intake. Daniel Kirby (90ED6LSV) suggested a 2.25" exhaust and I really like his advice as he knows a lot about Hondas so I'll probably shoot for that size of an exhaust instead.

U need to replace that AC with a universal parallel flow condenser because R134 was design to work with parallel flow. The condenser u have will definitely give u high head pressure when it 80-100 degrees outside, and it will not get cold after 100 degrees. If u had a PFC Condenser your AC will get super cold even when its 105 degrees outside. FYI the bigger the better.

nice gains! it would've been interesting to see the dyno difference between the 2 ecu's tho, there must be something different about it And you want to do a short ram air intake, but if you drive in hot weather that might get you less power, since the car already dropped a bit when it was hotter with the airbox, maybe it might be a good idea to get a quality air filter for the oem airbox ? because the short ram will only be getting warm air from the engine bay, unless you build your own airbox with ducts and stuff ? I wonder what the result is going to be :D great vids bro !
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks falZ! I'm going to use the CAI that is on my track car. I ordered a larger 3" diameter short ram for the b20, and will swap the cold air to the wagon. I have the oem dust/dirt/water plastic liner around the wheels still so that will help protect the air filter. I think that will make a big difference in power. I have a K&N filter on the oem air box already, not sure if it made any difference though. I do think after an intake and exhaust I may try another crack at the Dyno to see results!!

Hello Jon! I'm from Moldova, I have a Civic ED6 with d15b2 DPFI. I have the opportunity to put a D15Z6, will I encounter more obstacles considering it is with VTEC? Or is it better to leave the old D15b2 block with the L3 gearbox and put only the cylinder head from the d15z6 with the intake and the ECU d15z6? I'll have to pull cable for VTEC ... Thanks buddy! You're doing good videos!
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 жыл бұрын
Since they are both 1.5 litres I can't imagine it'll be a big difference in power. It'll be less work just doing the head swap. I would probably just swap the entire engine and sell the old one, no need to pull apart 2 different engines just to make one. The only obstacle will be pulling the whole engine as compared to just the head. The thing that's nice is that you'll get be able to add new parts and clean the engine bay and engine.

I bought the acura integra complete car it was a rear-ended accident and I'm going to use the harness from the shock tower to the engine. And for the evap system I'm going to connect the little vacuum line to the hose that goes to the top of the intake manifold on the B18b1 I think the same vacuum will power the little vacuum line and open the canister evap port. Appreciate it!! You may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Possible intake manifold, throttle body, or even TPS sensor gasket. You can spray some carb cleaner around all of those gaskets and see if it makes the engine decrease in idle at any point. If it does you may have found a leak. You can also spray soapy water on all the vacuum hoses to check for leaks, but I would just replace those. It will be about a 10 minute job and cost $5. Any check engine lights on?

pr4 ecu map is for an LS b18a by using it to run a d15 it is running too rich for the fuel map that the d15 needs, same deal goes for the b20 except it's going to run lean, both of which will cause excessive heat in cylinders and potential for detonation also higher carbon build-up, for d15b2 engine you'll need a pm5 or p04 ecu, get your HP and TQ back to the 92hp/88tq it should be there's a vid on my channel of my d15b7 with a z6 head vs a Mustang GT my vid shows how a single jingle is supposed to run here it is : kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3PQYXWdjbCaqKs

+John Cook Yes, I was just using the PR4 as a temp fix until you can find the PM6. The PM5 will not work as it's the DPFI ecu and see converting to MPFI only.allows use of an ECU with 4 injectors. The best ecu to run on this setup I have (d15b2 engine with MPFI parts) would be the P06 from the 92-95 Civics (DX,LX,CX) and converting to obd1 since that is the 1.5L engine with MPFI. I believe that would give you the best gas mileage and power for the setup. I've always felt the MPFI PM6 combo on a 1.5L runs rich and burns more fuel than needed but it's still safe.
