I just did my rear bearings on my 2005 Toyota Tundra using your video as a guide. I purchased the 20 ton press from harbor freight and was very disappointed. The height from the one I bought compared to yours is different. Harbor freight, probably, in a cost savings scheme has made the whole press shorter. This reduces the clearance on the bottom area. I did get it all done using blocks under the press and doing some other jury rigged stuff with the press. Just a heads up to those trying to do the same job with Harbor Freight as your supplier of the press. Excellent video!

The top ring that you're calling the locking washer, is actually a seal ring. I'd be interested to hear if you have an axle seal leak after seating it against the abs gear like that. I did that exact thing once on both sides and both axle seals leaked like crazy after and I had to redo both sides, brakes, bearings, seals and all.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 4 ай бұрын
Dude, wow. One has started leaking really bad just lately. I was curious as to what but haven't had time to pull it apart and look. Did you leave a gap between the "seal ring" and the abs gear?
@matthewwall5958
@matthewwall5958 4 ай бұрын
@@GarageBuiltHondas I did, because I wanted the abs gear to be centered in the hole. I don't have any clue as to whether that matters or if it's better to have them together though. So far no leaks from the axle seal though. To double check I was riding on center of the seal ring, I put some bearing grease on the ring and put it in, bolted it down and rotated a few times, pulled it and made sure the seal was riding middle of the ring based on how far the seal pushed the bearing grease back. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks so much for posting this up. Really great to know. When I get to look at mine, and hopefully fix I'll respond back here to you and let you know what I found and maybe the same fix will help me. Yes, everything you said makes perfect sense. Appreciate the info Matt, really nice to hear these kinds of experiences!!
@Ocean_breezes
@Ocean_breezes 3 ай бұрын
The distance from the abs locking ring to the brake housing is the critical measurement here. That's what seals the entire axle assembly to the axle housing. There are other videos that show you how to make sure the seals line up correctly, distance wise. Maybe measuring the distance from the original axle end at the splines to the abs "locking" ring is the best measurement
@MsJostock
@MsJostock 2 ай бұрын
With the 4Runner 3rd gen you turn the “locking washer” upside down, so that the curved side is to the bottom, that way you have more sealing surface. Because Toyota redesigned some stuff this is a new solution, don’t know it’s the same with the tundra but looks identical.

Yes, pulled the axle, driver side, and crunch crunch, bearing shot to hell. Will get local shop to remove the old bearing, and I'm so nervous that they might get the distance of the abs-ring/retainer that I think i will do this part myself with a long pipe. NOTE: The final retainer collar, in front of the ABS ring is acutely the sealing surface for the inner axle seal!!!! They should have called this part an "axle seal ring" or something like that. Any hoooo others have marked the new retainer with a black sharpie, assembled the axle and then pulled out the axle just enough to see if the axle seal has wiped the sharpie in approx. the mid point of the retainer. Measure yours 1st for reference- as you did! Tricky, but once you understand the relationship it all makes good sense. Will report back , off to the shop now@@GarageBuiltHondas

@markstevens1729 Жыл бұрын
@@mattleek650 it’s a bit of a story but it did great. Basically 3-4’ of 2-1/2” sched 40 pipe, cut to 24” and 18” pcs. Weld a 1/4”+ (thick plate, I used 4”wide by 5” long) rectangle flange (I used a 2-1/8” hole saw to cut out for the axle to pass, leaves a nice reveal flange to weld to..) on one end of the 24” pc and a 3/8” flange on the other (ditto on the hole saw..), drilled with 1/2” holes on 3-1/2” centres. That one is for the bearing. The other pc, 18” gets a flange on one end and needs very robust hooks on the other. I tried bent 3/4x 1/8” bar but it wasn’t strong enough for the 12-ton press. I went to my local rental shop and they had a pair of puller bars, slotted and drilled which I was able to mount to my flanged pipe (plug-welded nut and a welded stud and nut.)Pulled the ABS ring off like a charm. Used a 2’ piece of 1-1/2” black pipe to handle the pounding/seating duties of the new bearing/ABS/collars. I bought the press a couple of years ago just for this pending job, and it is fully paid for now.

Perhaps you can help. I have a 2002 Tundra and the local Toyota dealer placed all of the new bearing components as you have. Yet, when I placed the axel, there was about a 4mm gap between the hub and axel flange. It would not seat completely. I tightened the four retaining nuts and drew the axel in, I sensed that the bearing was moved and seated deeper. But would that have created a gap under the C clip? Do you know what could have happened? Everything else seems appropriate. Dennis
@barbarawhite6601
@barbarawhite6601 8 ай бұрын
I came upon a Toyota dealer with a very experienced master mechanic. "Rob" has done at least 50 of these axel bearing installs. Turns out that when the bearing is pressed fully seated to the axle, it is not fully seated into the hub. It tends to be about 4mm proud. When the axle is inserted into the housing, it is then about 4mm of a complete seat against the axle housing flange. Tightening the four retainer nuts will draw in the hub. During this time, the bearing is not moving in relation to the axle, the bearing is fully seating into the hub. This is all normal and to be anticipated. Dennis
