We are looking at purchasing our very first bus!! Its a 1973 automatic. 😍 Yay! The owner has told us that he keeps having to replace the flywheel due to it cracking. He had the motor souped up a couple years ago. Any idea why the flywheel would be cracking now? Do you think it cannot handle the new beefed up motor? He had the transmission rebuilt after the motor because of the issue and it sounds like that corrected whatever was making the crack(S) happen. Im a little worried we are buying a bus that cannot handle it's new motor. Should we be concerned you think? Hope that makes some kind of sense. Lol I'd appreciate any feedback. I dont know anyone who owns a bus personally to ask. 🙂

you probably figured out why the flywheel was cracking by now ? If I had to guess, Fatigue failure around the crank, material issue with flywheel, something is not aligned. Had an automatic once hoping for a 5 speed soon...

How does a suburu engine mount? Does Kennedy have a mounting bar that allows it to mount to the original vw mount points? Also what Suburu engines is this compatible with?

As far as I know they do not, but lots of others making and selling. We ordered ours through www.subiswaps.com. But also looked at the one made by www.busaru.com. We went with a EJ25 SOHC but depending on you needs wants and budget, lots of options out there. Think the EJ25 SOHC is a very proven engine (with new head gasket) and the most common option into a bus, but do not know this for a fact.

I think putting a Subaru motor in a Bus is genius. But why would you not use a Subaru transmission too?

Ryan Chase Hi Ryan, you can, but again not just a simple bolt in replacement, modifications are required. Nose cone, reverse cut ring and pinion (so you don’t end up with 1 drive gear and 5 reverse gears) etc... Depending on the results we get, I may walk down this road. A company called Subigears has again done all the leg work and will sell you the parts (ring and pinion etc) to do yourself or if you wish you can buy a transmission ready to bolt on.

Also subarugears reverse R&P kit is $1900 and you still need to find a subaru trans. Or you buy a rebuilt trans with the kit already in it for $4k.
