When I first saw this, I was first horrified at the ending. But when I think about it more, I feel like that bird was actually a real living bird that was prisoned for a crime by having it shackled in a cuckoo clock, and after years of popping in and out, it decided to *literally* break free at the cost of having itself amputated. Judging by the way the bird is aware and sentient, it's definitely an alive one.
