First Impressions of My New BMW F750 GS

Some of my first impressions of my new BMW F750 GS motorcycle - comfort of the seat, wind protection, handling and just general comments on one of my first long rides on the new bike.

I’ve definitely gotten wiser as I’ve gotten older but still a work in progress. I like the lighter weight of this new BMW - just taking me some time to figure out all the high tech gizmos on this thing. But the safety features are great. The windscreen will be history very soon. I was tired yesterday after riding all day from all the wind on my body and around my head. Too old for that! Thanks as always for watching and I’m still recovering from being a furniture mover this past weekend in Nashville. I told my son he’s on his own from here on out. Ha !

My wife got into riding recently and we bought a 99 BMW F650 with 88k miles for her to learn. She loved that bike but quickly realized she has had too many knee surgeries to risk 2 wheels. We went to the 3 wheel can am class to see if she might like riding one of those. We were both amazed at how fun they are. She now has a full touring version the rt limited. I encourage everyone to take a weekend class just to test the waters. Most people have a blast. The Ryykers ones are a handful in steering department but the RT is a breeze

I'm like you, I'll turn 74 next month and love riding every day I can. Down here in south Alabama you can pretty much ride all year long. I had a series of heavy cruisers until one day I realized that I prefer the upright riding position of naked/roadster/adventure bikes. I now have a '23 BMW F900R and I love it. My favorite bike thus far. Stay safe.

I have a 2021 F750GS and added the Madstad 18" windshield. It makes a HUGE difference! I am in pretty much a bubble of calm air now! Also added a Sargent seat which was nice but I've since switched back to the original seat. ps - Also added Barkbuster hand guards, helps to keep the wind off your hands. (I ride in Michigan in the Spring - Fall and the windshield and hand guards make a big difference in keeping you warm - plus the heated grips of course)! (I also have a 2014 Harley Fatboy Lo, nice having the two totally different bikes).

I just installed the 18-in Madstad windshield this weekend and took a ride out on the highway and county roads. Huge improvement as you say. Air was deflected completely over my helmet. I could open my visor and had no wind blast to my face at all. Well worth the cost and easy to install. Looks like good quality too. Thanks for watching!

I’m thinking adding the hand guards too for the exact reasons you mentioned. I’m going to give the stock seat a longer test before I change that. I’ve heard the Sargent seats are good but firm. I’ll probably go with BMW comfort seat, but that’s down the road. If I decide to go on a long trip this summer I might get it.

Yes the Sargent seat is firm but a bit wider in the seat so might work better for you or not. Also I'm 69 which is one of the reasons I went with the F750GS (lighter weight, plus it has all the goodies my Harley doesn't! Cruise control, heated grips, runs on regular gas and gets around 60mpg, and it's pretty quick and agile compared to the Harley).

Glad you’re enjoying the Beemer. I traded my Harley Sport Glide for a Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 last September and, like you, left the dealers with a new bike and a pocket full of cash! Such a good feeling! I’m 70 years old and my thought processes about weight and manoeuvrability were similar to yours and, after twenty-five years of Harley ownership, I was also fed up with the increasingly high running costs here in the UK. Sounds like we have a lot in common. Your new Royal Enfield is a great smaller motorcycle that I’m sure you love. Royal Enfield has done a great job at making these affordable bike options for those of us wanting to downsize. I just bought the same exact bike a couple of weeks ago as brand new rider. I just switched the seat out today and it was a game changer. A lot more comfortable! The windscreen is definitely something that needs to be changed. I ordered the 18" mad stad a couple of days ago and it should be arriving soon. I'll give you an update when it comes and let you know how it works. Thanks for the informative video!

@@GARamblinMan Hey man sure thing! It's actually a Sargent seat. It was on another Gs750 at the BMW lot and I swapped it out for the original seat. Of course they charged me 300 bucks for the trade but I was told it was an 800 seat. Guess I should have done my research first. They did let me test it out for about an hour before I bought it and I will say I was satisfied. The one thing I didn't like about the Sargent seat is that it's a tad bit slippery, but the comfort it provided me was an easy trade off. Also the Sargent sits a tad bit higher than the factory so keep that in mind also.

Thanks for the information on the Sargent seat. You got a good deal on it for sure. I’m looking at this or the BMW comfort seat. I’ve heard good comments on both. And both increase the seat height about an inch due to the extra padding. I’m going to replace the windshield first and then move onto the seat issue before the weather completely warms up and riding season is in full swing. Thanks again and ride safe!

Nice bike congratulations, I'm glad you like it. I am 73 years old still riding a Electra Glide Ultra. It is the only Harley I have ever owned I came from a Goldwing. It is a 2006, I was 60 years old when I bought it in 2010 it had 8,192 Mi on it. And now has 123,4xx on it. We're going to see which one of us blows up first me or the bike.😂😂😆 Share hope it's the bike. Be careful, ride safe.

Lets see: compared to your Heritage - you save 230 pounds and also get tubeless tires with your f750 ! (Personally, I would never buy any bike with tube tires). I've been eyeing the 2024 BMW R12 which is the same weight as the f750 but has a little more touring power and with shaft drive. Anyway, enjoy your rides...and be safe.

The weight savings was number one on my list for a new bike and the 750 GS fits the bill there. I like the R12 too - great looking bike. I had a shaft drive on my old Suzuki Boulevard and it was nice. I’ve already bought the chain lube and I’m ready to do that again, but if I had a choice belt or shaft drive is better. After having the flat tire in the Heritage a few years ago in the middle of nowhere, tubeless tires were also high on my list Thanks for watching and good luck on getting the R12. Ride safe!

I have a 2012 F650GS with full crash guards and full panniers, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am selling it to a friend and am going to purchase the same f750GS once we settle in Europe. I have done everything I wanted to with this bike, even had it off road many times. At 66, I'm not boulder jumping, but I do like to do light off road riding and my F650GS did just fine. I just put some Michelin Anakee Adventures on it and it handled the dirt, gravel, and rocks beautifully. I even had it in sand as my bike does not have traction control and the ABS can be turned off. Dropped it twice, but even the larger ones drop in sand :) You have a great bike there. Enjoy!

@@GARamblinMan Yes, the skid plate is a must along with the crash guards. My skid plate is steel, and my panniers and crash guards are Givi (Givi sides and the top box is the BMW Vario.) Bought mine Givi's from RevZilla. Excellent! I will do the same with the f750gs. I also have the larger touring windshield and an extender for highway riding, and I put a rear brake extender on too for my off road boots.

@@GARamblinMan I have both the Madstad flyscreen and touring windshields for my Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster. Yes, Madstad is great, and I will probably order that one as well. I have the 22" which is perfect on that bike, but will probably go with an 18" on the BMW. Did you get 18"?

@rabukan5842 yes I got the 18-inch and it’s perfect for me. I see right over the top of it and it blocks all the wind on my chest and sends the air right over my helmet. I am 6-0” tall and have the standard seat.

I have enjoyed your videos! Glad you are still riding. I downsized from a 2011 Kawasaki Nomad 1700 to a 2017 Suzuki v Strom 650. And now ride a 2015 Yamaha FJR 1300. I just turned 65 and may be down sizing again in the future. But I enjoy the conversation about riding and motorcycle. Wish I started riding sooner, so I could have rode longer!😊

+1 on Sargent Seats. Great company, good value product. I have their custom M Logo stitched low version seat on my 2004 BMW R1150RT. I can stay in the saddle for a couple of hours before needing a stretch break.

I’ve seen some good comments on their seats on KZbin videos. I’ll consider them and the comfort seat from BMW, but I’m going to give this stock seat a go for a few months. The higher priority for me is to get a larger windshield. I’ve already ordered the 18-in Madstad clear screen. I’ll show it in a video as soon as I get it installed. I will be turning 69 in March and have also done the same. I've been riding a Victory Vision Tour for the past 4 years and it has been a great motorcycle, but I have found myself having to go more off pavement to get to friend's farms and homes up here in South Dakota. The Victory is about 900lbs wet and while I have never dropped it off tarmac, it was a handful. I just purchased an R1200GSA, a late 17 with really low mileage already set up for me ergonomically. The center of gravity is nice and low like the Vic, but shedding almost 400lbs felt like moving over to a scooter. Since I am pretty tall at 6'4"+ and weigh around 270lbs, I can flat foot both feet at a stop no problem. I wish I had considered this 4 years ago, but better late than never.

I thought long and hard before I sold my Heritage. I really had it upgraded to my liking but I’m a pretty conservative guy when it comes to finances and I just couldn’t justify having two relatively new and expensive motorcycles in my garage. I probably would have ignored one or the other and I didn’t want to pay taxes and insurance on something I wasn’t using a lot. Good thing is that I sold the Heritage for more than I paid for the BMW. That was a nice feeling to walk out of the BMW dealer with a new bike and money left over in my pocket. Thanks as always for watching. I really appreciate it.

Lack of a larger windscreen will definitely start to fatigue you on longer trips at higher speeds. Glad you’re liking the bike! Regarding seats, I’m a fan of Sargent seats but they are firm so if you prefer something squishy, you may want to consider the BMW comfort seat.

I’m going to ride it more before I change the seat. This one is pretty comfortable and I think the windshield is a higher priority. It’s fine up to about 50 mph, but above that it’s just too much wind on my body and head. It really tired me out today and that’s not going to work. I bought the Heritage new in Feb 2021 so I had it for about 3 years and loved the bike, but it was just time for me to downsize a bit and this new BMW is a different style of motorcycle that I wanted to try. The price was right and it has all the features I want plus is about 230 lbs lighter than my Heritage so I think it’s a good change. I’ll have plenty more videos of the new bike and how I like it and what it can do. Thanks as always for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the comments. I use a Purple Panda lavalier microphone from my GoPro on my helmet that is mounted on my chin bar. I route the cable from the GoPro behind the cheek pads and have the microphone taped to the inside of my helmet right in front of my mouth on the lower inner chin bar. The newer Purple Panda microphones come with a small foam wind sock on it that cuts down the wind noise a lot. I have my GoPro Hero 8 mounted in their MediaMod accessory that allows me to plug the microphone cable directly into the GoPro without an adapter. It took me a long time to get this set up for good audio quality but it works great. Thanks for watching!

I haven’t noticed any excessive engine heat so far but it’s been pretty cool here. It’s a water cooled engine so I don’t anticipate a problem. It also starts right up. No hard starting so far at all. I’m really glad I downsized to a lighter motorcycle like this. I’m taking it on a 5-day trip from my house in Georgia up to and around West Virginia the first week in May. I think the suspension travel and dynamic electronic suspension feature make it a great ride. I think it’s better than my Heritage. I also like the electronic adjustment of the rear shock preload. Easy to do from the screen. I had to take the seat off the Heritage and use a special tool to adjust the rear mono shock preload. I’m very happy with the comfort and plush ride of this motorcycle. This is a very thorough review. You seem to like this. BMW. I noted in your previous videos that you also tested a triumph 660 tigersport and a Kawasaki versus 650. I'm sure you are comparing bikes back then. Why should a person choose the BMW 750 GS over those bikes? I didn't hear you talk about engine vibration. Did you detect any severe by vibrations at various speeds? I'm at a similar stage in life, perhaps a bit younger. And it is this size of motorcycle that I'm considering. Thank-you

I’ll make a video soon about why I chose the BMW F750 GS over some of the other models I tested like the Kawasaki Versys 650 and Triumph Tiger 660. I thought the Tiger 660 and Kawasaki Versys 650 were just a bit too small for me and neither had cruise control, which I wanted. I also detected a bit of vibration in the handlebars on the Tiger 660 at highway speeds I did not like. I thought the seats on those two smaller bikes were not as comfortable as the BMW. Bottom line is that the BMW offered more options and better technology for only a slightly higher price. These adventure style bikes are a great option for an older rider to downsize to. I did, but when I was shopping in December/January, the dealers I talked to had no idea when they might get the 2024 models in stock, so I just decided to get a 2023 model. I really liked the light white color scheme on this 2023 model. The 2024 models have a slight increase in engine displacement up from 853 to 900 cc, but are essentially the same motorcycle. I wasn’t sure how much the price would increase too, although it turned out to be around only $300 or so. I had thought it would be more. All that being said, I’m glad I went ahead and got the 2023 model. I’ve had a chance to break it in, add a few options and be ready for the Spring season. Thanks for watching!

bmw cancelled he 750gs for asia but should i get one wtih more power; anyway. Love the low seat and fairly flat pannier seat. Options are limited; Kaw cancelleld the z900RS. so thats out. Tiger GT pro. is good seating for 2 up but is it too hi ? A bit lighter than the 750gs

I am a little surprised about the Harley but I do understand. I will be 60 in a couple of months and I have a 2019 ultra limited and 2007 Yamaha Fjr 1300. The Yamaha is okay at 635 lbs but the Harley is 920 lbs. I enjoy the Yamaha a lot more given its weight and playful spirit. The one bad thing about the Yamaha is no cruise control for those longer day rides but it’s a great daily bike with storage. I’ve been considering getting ride of the Harley and buying the new Yamaha tracer 9 GT +. Everything you could ever want on a motorcycle and radar adaptive cruise control for 16,499 clams. I will keep the fjr with its shaft drive and will deal with chain maintenance for the other bike. Do you think you can go on long day trips with that bike?

I think I will be able to take trips on this new BMW. I was out on it all day today and was very comfortable. I will have to add some luggage of some sort for overnight and longer touring but comfort wise it rides great. The suspension travel is good and the dynamic electronic suspension and ride modes along with the cruise control make it good for longer rides. I do have to upgrade the wind protection. That stock short windshield just won’t do it for me. I’m really enjoying having such a light, nimble and comfortable motorcycle. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

The Yamaha Tracer 9 GT is a great bike and I took a look at it before I bought the BMW F750 GS. I chose the BMW since it was less expensive but you certainly can’t go wrong with the Yamaha. Great Japanese reliability and the adaptive cruise control is awesome. BMW has that on some of their more expensive and bigger models.

Did you sell your heritage privately or trade it in for your new bike?

I sold it privately on Cycle Trader. I listed it and it was sold for cash in about 3 days. Very nice gentleman here in Atlanta got a good deal on a great motorcycle that I had already done all the upgrades to. So I had cash to go looking for a new motorcycle for myself and got this new BMW and walked out of the dealer with a lot of that cash from the Heritage sale still in my pocket. I know exactly what you mean regarding weather and time to get out, Same here. I think the seat thing is common most motorcycle manufacturers I think it's just a money spinner. The black screen on the handlebars is the BMW navigation prep feature they have where you can insert the BMW branded Garmin GPS unit into this cradle and use the motorcycle controls to control the GPS screen. I’ll do a video soon on the capabilities and use of this feature from BMW. It’s a great option in this model and all the other GS and GSA models. Regarding the seat, I’ve changed out the stock seat on almost every motorcycle I’ve ever owned and will do the same here most likely. Thanks for the kind comments and ride safe!

@kimetogo I have not tried the comfort seat yet. I’m sticking with the standard seat for now. My previous experience with aftermarket seats is that they are much better than the stock seats.
