Absolutely amazing marksmanship! I am a professional rifle smith and built a 1940s era style rifle for a client who insisted on the Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2 power scope. Shooting for groups at 100 yards was doable. Then, I took the rifle on a deer hunt and spotted a buck at about 400 yards. I could not believe how very small that deer looked in the scope. That Rob could hit targets out to 700 yards with this scope is unbelievable! Great job!

My Father (20th Inf. Reg., 6th Inf. Div.) was issued one of these on Luzon after getting out of the hospital after being wounded at the Battle of Munoz. By this time he had been battlefield commissioned and was leader of a weapons platoon. Not the usual weapon for a platoon leader, but he was known as a dead shot. I guarantee you that in his prime (on a calm day) he could have rung the bell on those targets with a .22lr and iron sights. I'm not sure how he had it sighted in, but I gather he didn't use "clicks," relying on Kentucky windage. What little he said about it was, "If you put the crosshairs on his teeth at 400 yards, you'd hit them in the heart." He always regretted not smuggling that rifle home.

Hi John, absolutely awesome. Thank you for posting. By any chance, do you have any pictures of your father with M1C maybe? I know nobody was running with cellphone cameras at that time like we do now, lol, but maybe someone snap few “old school” pictures for him? If so, could you please email me at rob@ak4774.com ? Either way, one more time, thank you for your post.

@@RiflesShootersClub Thanks for replying. I'm sorry to say I don't have or know of any pictures like that. There are only a few from his time in combat, and then only in the rear while relaxing. The photo I remember best was taken while he was home on leave, before deploying, mowing hay with a two-horse team wearing a uniform with buck-sergeant stripes. Dad passed in 1998 and I very much regret not learning more about his service. Although I'm not sure how much he would have talked about it. One of the few stories he told was how he came to have an officer's katana: "I was sitting in the jungle watching a trail. A Jap officer came along, so I shot him and took his sword." End of story. Although the furniture was standard army issue, the blade had been made around 1900 by a highly regarded blade maker. One mystery that's haunted me is the fact that he was somehow involved in the Raid on Cabanatuan to rescue the prisoners there. As of 1998 I knew nothing about it and kind of assumed he was there. Then later the book "Ghost Soldiers" came out and explained the actual raid was conducted by elements of 6th Rangers. I do have a theory about it: The Rangers departed from and returned to the section of line held by the 20th Inf. Reg. When they and the prisoners were returning a truck column was sent five miles behind the lines to meet them. If you had a weapons platoon handy, they'd be good folks to take on that ride. Just a wild guess, really. When Dad passed in '98 my brother, a retired Navy commander, arranged for a 23-man honor guard from Ft. Riley to attend the funeral and conduct a cemetery ceremony. It was pretty impressive for our little rural hamlet. I've kind run on here, but this opened up a whole can of memories.

Excellent shooting especially considering the glass on that rifle. I have a M1A with a 5x25x50 Athlon TAC scope, NM trigger, bedded stock, krieger medium barrel and handloads and here you are knocking it out of the park with a 2.5 fixed power scope, factory trigger and (probably) non bedded stock. That speaks volumes about your skillset.

My uncle gave me a 7.7 Arisaka rifle as a kid, something he picked up in the Pacific. As I recall it was a later model but not one of the junkers. Chrysanthemum was ground off. The bore looked mint and it might have been chromed against corrosion. I fired it in college using Norma ammo. Kicked like mule. The 7.7 is almost ballistically the same as a 3006. Unfortunately, no longer in the safe. My uncle was a medic in the army and Believe he said he just picked it off a big pile of rifle gathered up for trophies to take home. Also had the correct bayonet.

@ Robski Those Arisaka rifles don't always get the respect that they deserve. That's due in part to the precipitous decline in quality of materials and workmanship in the "last ditch" examples, but also perhaps because people do not realize just how skilled the Japanese of that time were in forging high-strength steel. Metal-working is an ancient art in Japan, since the samurai sword has been part of that culture for so long.... and that expertise carried over to small arms. American gunsmith P.O. Ackley did post-war destructive testing of service rifles from various nations, and amongst Second World War bolt-actions, the Arisaka had the strongest receiver by a considerable margin.

Hi Rob as usual great videos a couple of questions 1 your spotting scope and tripod what makes and how much? 2 how much better do you think all of the ww1 and ww2 rifles would be if you could fit say a Weaver or red field scope of 2 to 10 power scope with a 30 30 duplex reticle? Which do you think would be the best. Keep up the good work.
@RiflesShootersClub3 жыл бұрын
David, scope is: leupold mark 4 tactical spotting scope, 12-40x60mm and tripod is Bushnell Tactical. I think that simple 4x power scope, KM which was issued later, was much better and sufficient solution for this rifle.

@@RiflesShootersClub Thanks for the reply Rob, in the 2 question I was asking which of the sniper rifles do you think in your opinion would perform best with with a later type scope such as a weaver or red field with a magnification range of 2 to 10 or 3 to 9 and a simple duplex reticule. Given the thick posts etc of the early sniping scopes, or is this for another series of videos later on? all the best and keep up the good work. Regards Dave.

Sadly, this the issue related to funding. It doesn’t matter if I have 1 round or 8 (in this case). I have to wait for Ula to cycle with camera from target to target and setting it up correctly, so you guys can see nice traces and everything is relatively sharp takes time. I experimented with numerous “scope cameras”, but with vintage optics it’s always struggle to attach them correctly because of unusual scope sizes but even then, quality was rather disappointing because those scopes have rather small magnification and you couldn’t really see much…so it was counter productive. Going back to this video, closer to the end, when I’m shooting from kneeling, I used rounds from the clip and cycle through the targets up to 400yds in one by one shot without pausing. We tried to setup camera behind me in hope you could see hits on all targets but after 200yds you couldn’t really see if I’m missing or hitting (you could hear “bang” on target but we have all seen those videos when people were adding fake sounds, right? Lol). Anyway, I hope that with channel future growth, I will eventually get some sponsor who would help to cover cost of ammo and production, and we could make those videos even better because I have some awesome ideas. There is zero income from those videos because they are all demonetized (you may see KZbin playing commercials on it but they are the only ones making money on it). That’s ok tho. I will keep going as long as I can with making those videos because I want to preserve on tape what those rifles can do. On the other hand, I’m not a guy with bottomless pockets, so my budget is very limited. Anyway, thank you for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!
