Often worn to look intimidating, but do these bulletproof masks actually work? This is the question we wanted to answer with today's ballistic tests vs 22, 9mm, 45, 44 mag, 12 gauge and 308. The answer is likely what you'd expect but not for the reason you'd expect. In any case these were bought by me and not provided by any company. :)

I'm not a doctor yet but i'm a resident and i did some rotation on traumatology Although the mask fails at the job of protecting the face and even in the lower calibers you would be incapacitated It is interesting to note that it does change the type of trauma and it greatly improves your chance of survival and recovery In a penetrative wound such as a gunshot the damage is not dealt to the point of entry it is done all throught the trajectory making a cone shape wound that is far bigger on the exit Because as the bullet looses momentum it transfers more and more energy However using this mask you would get a wound similar to blunt force trauma and the damage in that case would be far more superficial Which means that we could treat you like you had a car accident In the every day hospital it is very rare to treat a gun shot wound, especially on the head or face because usually they arrive dead if they arrive at all But someone who had a car accident is as regular as every friday night so we are more experienced to treat you In the case someone got shot in the middle of the mask with a low caliber I could send them to a cat scan search for internal bleeding and inflamation on the brain I probably would have to send you to get emergency surgery to open the back of your skull to relieve the internal pressure and give room for the brain to expand Then i'll have to realign your lower jaw and after some days get you another surgery to remove the upper jaw to replace it with a titanium bar and some dental prothesis And after several reconstructive efforts and at least 4 months of rehabilitation you would be able to go back to your life with something similar to a nose and slight brain damage Bad news you wont get to be a model but you would live (If you get treatment withing the hour of getting shot) The alternative would be not using the mask and the bullet would go straight to the brain killing you instantly Edit: wow 8 months since this comment, i got a notification and read some insightful replies i will try to answer some of them in a reply of my own. Thanks to everyone who participated in this little debate of ours

What would be interesting is the types of neck injury and Coup contrecoup injury seen in these scenario. The shield may have limited the penetration but the energy is still transferred to the wearer. With a frontal hit and hyperextension of the cervical spine, I'd wager you would see a lot of Dens fractures.

I can understand the PRINCIPLE they were trying to achieve. “Bulletproof” armor with a contour so that the bullet deflects off the curved surface. It’s similar to an armadillo, which if you’re shooting with a .22 you have to hit it between the bands, because the bullets will (most of the time) ricochet off the armadillo’s shell, and it’s not even made of anything as strong as this mask.

To the question, “what is this even used for”? Keep in mind, 2004-2006 in Iraq we didn’t have armored vehicles and were driving about in soft skin Chevy Tahoe’s. Gunners were “porcupineing “ out doors with no glass. The Well gunners and Turret gunners were a little More exposed to IED blasts but we all ate one eventually. One of my well gunners took a small piece of shrapnel right above the eyebrow. Soon, many gunners were buying face armor to protect against IED blasts. I don’t know anyone that was hit while wearing the face armor but it was popular early on. If you are on patrol or clearing buildings the armor wouldn’t work because of vision restriction, but sitting in a back seat waiting to get hit by an IED on Sadoon Street, it was practical.

The problem with a bullet proof facemask is that it either has to be heavy duty enough that it won't deform, loose fitting enough that it can deform without injuring you... or _both._ For most people, most of the time, "not getting hit in the head" is the more practical option. A Kevlar pillowcase over your head could "stop" all kinds of rounds, just not *quickly enough.*

The thing about modern body armour is that none of it really uses the knowledge gained from ancient armour designs. Some do but very, very rarely. Medieval plate armour was designed in a way were the curvature of plates not only made things like swords and arrows deflect off the armour, the curves also made it so there were spots on your body, where there's an empty void between you and your armour. These voids were mainly located on the chest, shoulders and head. This was especially important on helmets that covered your whole head, where the front and top section never actually make contact with your skull. So if you were to take a hit that deformed your face-shield, the gap between your face and the metal makes it less likely for the deformation to reach your bone and shatter your skull. But not all armours in that time were made the same, so this mechanic varied greatly from armour set to armour set. The main point is, you don't really see this method being used in modern body armour. Modern armour is always touching your body, except for helmets. But most helmets these days rarely use face-shields, save for riot helmets and some Russian helmets. And without some gap between your chest and your armour, a vest that can stop a 50-BMG is rather redundant since it won't stop your rib-cage from shattering due to sheer kinetic trauma. Keep in mind I'm not saying a gap between you and your armour would work perfectly all the time. I just think it would be better than having a bullet resistant plate pressed right against your sternum. Or in the case of this video, right against your bloody face, where the deformation of a bullet impact sends your nasal cavity right into your fucking brain. If the mask was attached to a helmet and free floating away from your face, that would rarely happen.
@N.M.E.
@N.M.E. 5 ай бұрын
Yes. I like the way you're thinking. One thing to keep in Mind though is, that the ballistics/mechanics of impact are usually dependent on the velocity of the projectile/ impactor in a very complex way. Most if not all materials (like steel (Armor)) exhibit some form of visco-elasticity which means, in most basic terms, that their hardness varies with the speed of the imparted deformation. At very high speeds (like supersonic bullet speeds and above) even solid metals can behave more like a fluid and deflection through angled impact becomes less viable/ effective. Thusly I think it wouldn't be entirely sufficient to copy many of the old principles unmodified as, of course, a swing from a poleaxe or even a shot from a powerful war bow or a musket ball will behave radically different to modern firearms and bullets. In perhaps unforseen or even counterintuitive ways even. Then again I'm sure there is a whole lot of interesting research about this, which is, of course, tax payer funded, but which none of us can ever hope of reading up about. Greetings from Germany!

The problem with this face mask is that the centre is the same thickness as the rest of the mask and rounds naturally get deflected towards the eyes due to the contours of the mask. I think the manufacturer could learn a lot by studying medieval armour. Medieval breastplates were thicker in the centre and curved so that arrows would be deflected, they also had ridges at the top of the chest which would divert deflected arrows away from the users face. They need to make the face mask thicker in the middle and incorporate ridges to deflect rounds away from the eyeholes.

If it really is rated to stop a 44. And have you carefully sourced the masks so they are not some knock of version (not that I believe they are, but just in case).

Additionally, Just because armor meets standards for deformation and penetration you have to also consider force transference and trauma. Most people focus only on penetration and deflection. But depending on what your hit with the force which transfers into your body would be similar to say a 4+ story fall concentrated in a small area which you would still not walk away from. This is why trauma padding is important for dispersing force evenly. There are many people who have armor rated for say a 1 oz slug and even a .50 but with no trauma padding you could still experience internal bleeding and ruptured organs and may still die before you even see EMS. A year or so of working in the ED dealing with blunt force trauma from GSWs taught me not to skimp out. Always get the trauma padding.

Agreed just look at Medieval warfare A sword couldn't cut through breast plate armor so what did you use? A war hammer. A war hammer wasn't designed to puncture the breast plate but deliver kinetic force and damage the body. A warhammer could penetrate the armor but it was designed to kill you with the kinetic force. People in the comments aren't realize that yeah the mask might not have been penetrated but the sheer kinetic force that bullet moves at and especially the denting of the mask will kill you. Sure the KJ on the bullet is lower than the KJ of a warhammer but the damage will be done. It's your face and brain thw weakest and most vital area in your body. So yeah the mask might not let the bullet penetrate but that kinetic energy will definitely kill you. Plus the way the mask is designed the bullets get deflected into the eye which is a horrible design People in the comments don't realize that just because the bullet doesn't penetrate doesn't mean it won't kill you.

The back-face deformation observed when removing the mask (or most any type of armor) is less than the actual full deformation (it snaps back). This is why proper armor/helmet testing SOP/TOPs utilize temperature-conditioned and calibrated clay, with specific support, to accurately capture the event. The clay is then scanned with a laser to create a 3D solid model (similar to a CAD file), from which measurements are made. Since the clay properties, projectile before & after mass, and muzzle velocity are known and controlled for, a little math provides details such as energy delivered, and is then fed into injury prediction equations/curves that are based on further supporting testing done over the last 25 years. This is done for various thoracic/pulmonary injuries, neck, cranial, ocular, auditory, and other injury mechanisms, including ballistic and blast overpressure inputs.

Funny that you specifically mention bascinets, because the scenario you are describing is practically impossible with those. Medieval helmets actually had a lot of thought put into them, and the curves guide projectiles away from the openings. Nearly all bascinets have eye openings smaller than the diameter of an arrowhead, so it's very unlikely to get hit in the face.

@@alexcoroian3983idk about the deflecting to the eye part, because yeah that sucks, but certainly as it is i'd say these face masks are cost effective, because even for rifles if your expecting a flak vest to stop their bullets and yet this thing to have no potential of saving your life at engagement ranges (certainly not letting you tank and fight) then give me that invulnerability blunt your smoking. Problems I'd identify is that the masks are clearly meant for intimidation due to the visibility constraints and the fact the eyes are entirely exposed while we also know the mask doesn't combine well with any additional optical equipment. A simpler redesign that leaves more of a "eyeband" where a "bullet proof" visor can be placed allowing for better visual and maybe a helmet designed to work with this, and the whole thing will be great. Also to note, the mask is predominantly Taiwanese, any Chinese using this are purely using it for intimidation as their army as of 2019 still hadn't made body armor of any kind standard issue. Thus the reforms they started (IDK if they'll follow through with em) where they would downsize their army and issue "upgraded" gear to their smaller, and now presumably more elite, army's forces and which would feature standardized body armor, an new rifle (though the one initially proposed has already been pulled due to major flaws that became known once in the field) and allegedly better comms coordination.

These are more used for a psychological effect. They're similar to the Samurai face masks. They provided a little protection, but were clearly more geared toward scaring the piss out of their adversaries. Imagine encountering a bunch of armor clad baddies, all wearing those. It would have a profound psychological effect on you. The thing about masks is their ability to hide visible fear. Your enemy is faceless and unsympathetic. That can be demoralizing for the enemy. There is, however, a downside. Because you're a faceless enemy, your opponent won't see you as a fellow human being. Therefore , showing you mercy is not on the itinerary.

5:12 Another thing with armor is that the way it's shaped affects the angle at which things fly off of it. When the projectile hits, it almost looks like the mask's own design is forcing it into the eyehole, in slow motion.

That’s because the human skull is evolutionary designed in a way to redirect blows away from the brain the brow and cheekbones protect the eye socket from blunt force trauma. Humans are a 2,000,000 year old species but recorded history is only a fraction of that time so most ware-fare for a long time was clubs bones, stone axes and hand to hand combat between our prehistoric ancestors.

@@nova8797 Okay. I was referring to the angles of the armor mask literally forcing the projectile into the eyehole, though. The angles present on ANY piece of armor affect the direction in which things are going to fly off, and the design of this mask appears like it's vulnerable to bullets being redirected into the user's eyes by the mask itself. Also, for at least several thousand of it, we wore armor, so I don't see your point, frankly.

Several years ago, (late 90's) we were given similar looking face shields to be worn while executing dangerous search warrants. This was after an entry team cop was shot in the face during a warrant service. These masks were much thicker than the ones you're testing appear to be. It was possible to wear it with a standard kevlar helmet if you pushed the helmet up a little and let the mask cover your forehead instead of the front part of the helmet covering it, but it wasn't a good or comfortable fit. If the straps were adjusted to hold it in place it squished your nose and the whole scheme was awkward at best. We wore them on only one entry and found out we couldn't see very much at all. We decided it was better to take our chances and be able to see what's going on around us and we sent them back to the closet.

I imagine these masks are significantly more effective against shrapnel from traps and IEDs which would explain the military usage. Explosive devices were, are, and will continue to be the biggest cause of conflict casualties by far and away. Much like when the Germans introduced the Stahlhelm in 1916 even though they were pretty thin and in no way shape or form bulletproof they reduced the number of head injuries from lateral shrapnel by 90 percent. But that begs the question "why not just wear a helmet then?" Which like yeah you would still be significantly better off with any crappy off brand kevlar. The only thing these masks have going for them is in combination with a balaclava they're pretty darn bad guy cool.

If your decibel ratings are higher than the decibels of the impact Force being applied concussion Force AKA sound waves or mass movement of air molecules of which sound is a universal binding force of all matter itself for instance the decibel ratings on the surface of the Sun are in the trillions the infrasonic frequencies of the earth that produces earthquakes in magma etc is below the human range of hearing and frequency but the decibels produced can move mountains.. My father was an electro acoustic engineer and acoustic architectural engineer who served three tours in Vietnam as ECM reconnaissance.. Just like if I wrap a tweeter around the tip of a barrel and produce decibels higher by even 1%, then the total output of the rifle around being fired I can mitigate around 90% of the sound being produced... As I am now canceling out the sound waves now the funny part is I can do this in a below human range of hearing whereby unless you have a oscilloscope you're not going to find it or hear it but the decibels as in the molecules that I am moving in Mass will still cancel out the sound waves this is how soundwave noise cancellation technology actually works it was established as a fact of Science in 1946 by the war department and infrasonic weapons research and development.

I feel like everything below the .44 was actually fairly survivable. You're going to be knocked out and your face is going to be messed up, but it still does take a lot to kill someone, and a blunt brain injury isn't an instant death. If you were part of a police action and got popped in the face from a handgun, presumably your buddies are going to be able to drag you out and get you to a hospital. I have seen some truly gnarly face, skull, and brain injuries that people have survived. Like, if that dude was able to survive jumping off that pier and cracking his face open like the Predator on the concrete dock below it, then a smashed nose isn't going to do you in. However, if you're talking about a remote military action or solo defense, you're going lights out for everything except the .22, and that's as good as dead anyway. The other side of it is that in order to get that protection, you're suffocating inside of a sarcophagus you can't see out of, probably making you more likely to get shot in the face anyway.
